Tsunami simulation models from these trenches indicated that tsunami waves can reach the coast of Sabah between 40 and 120 minutes with tsunami wave heights reaching up to 3 m near the coast. The level of tsunami threat is high in southeast Sabah due to its narrow continental shelf and proximity to tsunami source in the North Sulawesi Trench. The level of tsunami threat is moderate in north and east Sabah due to their proximity to tsunami source in the Sulu Trench. The level of tsunami threat is low in west Sabah due to its distant location to tsunami source from the Manila Trench. While tsunamis cannot be prevented, its impact on human life and property can be reduced through proper assessment of its threat using tsunami simulation models. Unfortunately, constraints remain in producing a reliable tsunami inundation models due to the lack of high-resolution topography and bathymetry data in Sabah and surrounding seas. It would be helpful if such data can be acquired by the relevant government agencies, at least first, in high threat-level areas, such as Tawau and Semporna districts. -

The projected costs have been shown to be commonly underestimated while forecasted demand, overestimated. In this research, an ambitious project in the Western Visayas Region is assessed. The Panay-Guimaras-Negros Bridge Project intends to connect the islands via inter-island bridges that span a length of approximately 23 km. In this study, the PGN project is placed in the distribution of previously completed projects of the same scale and lessons are drawn from their experience. Moreover, Reference Class Forecasting is tackled in order to improve risk assessment in transportation infrastructure project proposals. If project proponents wish to reduce the level of risk from 50% to 20%, then a 12.4 billion to 29.7 billion Peso increase in the proposed budget should be added in order to avoid cost overrun. Rizalthus, new genus, with just one species, R. anconis, new species, can be distinguished from allied genera by characters of the carapace, epistome, chelipeds, male abdomen and male fi rst gonopod. Visayax, new genus, contains two new species, V. osteodictyon and V. estampadori, and can be distinguished from similar genera using a combination of features of the carapace, epistome, thoracic sternum, male abdomen, pereiopods and male fi rst gonopod. A new species of Hepatoporus Serène, H. pumex, is also described. It is distinguished from congeners by the unique morphology of its front, carapace sculpturing, form of the subhepatic cavity and structure of the male fi rst gonopod. This study provides an overview of intermediate-depth earthquake phenomena, placing emphasis on the larger, tectonically significant events, and exploring the relation of intermediate-depth earthquakes to shallower seismicity. Especially, we examine whether intermediate-depth events reflect the state of interplate coupling at subduction zones. and whether this activity exhibits temporal changes associated with the occurrence of large underthrusting earthquakes. Historic record of large intraplate earthquakes (m B 7.0) in this century shows that the New Hebrides and Tonga subduction zones have the largest number of large intraplate events. Regions associated with bends in the subducted lithosphere also have many large events (e.g. Altiplano and New Ireland). We compiled a catalog of focal mechanisms for events that occurred between 1960 and 1984 with M> 6 and depth between 40 and 200 km. The final catalog includes 335 events with 47 new focal mechanisms, and is probably complete for earthquakes with mB 6.5. For events with M 6.5, nearly 48% of the events had no aftershocks and only 15% of the events had more than five aftershocks within one week of the mainshock. -

Introduction A. Historical background and perspective The Philippines has more than two decades of experience in coastal resources management (CRM) and marine conservation, particularly in community-based initiatives, from which other countries in the region are drawing. However, a reservoir of lessons learned have not as yet been applied and translated significantly into improved environmental status nor to an uplifted socio-economic status of poor coastal communities. It has been reported that only 19% of community-based coastal resources management programs and projects implemented between 1984 and 1994 were successful (Pomeroy and Carlos 1997). These findings lead to the question of what is causing this low rate of success. Is there a need for a shift in the CRM model being followed? Or should these projects and programs simply need more time to mature and produce tangible results? A project implemented by the University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center looked at the contextual and intervention factors that affect the success of community-based marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Philippines which are a common or oftentimes the major intervention of coastal management programs. -

Louis Robert Sullivan was born at Houlton, Maine, May 21, 1892. He was educated in the public schools of Houlton and was graduated from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, in 1914. During the following academic year he taught in a high school and on November 24, 1915, he married Bessie Pearl Pathers of Lewiston, Maine. He entered Brown University as a graduate student and was assistant in zoology under Professor H. E. Walters, and in 1916 received the degree of master of arts. From Brown University Mr. Sullivan came to the American Mu- seum of Natural History, as assistant in physical anthropology, and during the first years of his connection with the Museum he laid the foundations for his future work in human biology, by training in general anatomy with Doctor William K. Gregory and Professor George S. Huntington and in general anthropology with Professor Franz Boas. From the very beginning, he showed an aptitude for research and he had not been long at the Museum ere he had published several important papers. These activities were interrupted by our entrance into the World War. Mr. Sullivan was appointed a First Lieutenant in the Section of Anthropology, Surgeon-General's Office in 1918, and while on duty at headquarters asisted in the compilation of the reports on Defects found in Drafted Men and Army Anthropology. -

The biological characteristics of the indigenous chicken have been noted and compared among four geographically distant groups within a small regional setting. A collection of representative chickens putatively of the same Basilan stocks from four provinces was established. The question whether the pure Basilan stock distributed in the entire island of Mindanao originated from the Basilan Island was answered by cluster analysis of the ten external phenotypic characters. The relatedness based on presence and absence of the tested phenotypes of the Basilan chickens from four geographically distant provinces of Surigao (in Eastern Mindanao), Agusan (in the CARAGA region), Lanao (in Northern Mindanao), and Basilan (in Western Mindanao), was examined for comparison including the hepatic, gonad, and hematologic -

The target study area is a Philippine Sea basin (PSB) with two focused marginal areas: Philippine Trench and Mariana Trench, two hadal trenches located in the places of the tectonic plates subduction. Marine free-air gravity anomaly in the PSP shows higher values (>80 mGal) of the gravity fields structure at the volcanic areas and Philippine archipelago. Current study presented comparative geophysical analysis, and mapping free-air gravity and geoid in the Philippine Sea basin area. As a result of this study, the average level of earthquakes located in the Philippine Trench and Mariana Trench areas were compared, and those located in the Philippine archipelago are determined to be in the souther-western part (area of west Mindanao, south-west Visayas islands), while Luzon Islands shown shallower located earthquakes. -

We also analyzed the various explanatory models in light of this updated dataset. The following main conclusions are discussed in this study. (1) The Izanagi slab detachment beneath the East Asia margin around 60–55 Ma likely triggered the Oki-Daito plume occurrence, Mesozoic proto-PSP splitting, shortening and then failure across the paleo-transform boundary between the proto-PSP and the Pacific Plate, Izu-Bonin-Mariana subduction initiation and ultimately PSP inception. (2) The initial splitting phase of the composite proto-PSP under the plume influence at ∼54–48 Ma led to the formation of the long-lived West Philippine Basin and short-lived oceanic basins, part of whose crust has been ambiguously called “fore-arc basalts” (FABs). (3) Shortening across the paleo-transform boundary evolved into thrusting within the Pacific Plate at ∼52–50 Ma, allowing it to subduct beneath the newly formed PSP, which was composed of an alternance of thick Mesozoic terranes and thin oceanic lithosphere.
