  • Welcome Back! News from the Makerspace
Unsubscribe View in your browser Welcome Back! Friends of TVCOG, Welcome to July at TVCOG and a happy Independence Day to all! As NYS reaches vaccination benchmarks, and state restrictions ease, we find ourselves able to lift some of our safety measures. We are excited to inform you that as of today, July 1, 2021, face masks are no longer required for fully vaccinated individuals while in our facility. We look forward to seeing your smiling faces again! We are also excited to announce that we are increasing our in-person programming options and public events. This month marks the return of drop-in tours for Troy Night Out, and the beginning of class and program preparation for our fall trimester. We look forward to returning to a robust program schedule for both members and non-members alike. -- Cheryl Kennedy, Executive Director News from the Makerspace In the Spotlight... Tower: An Art Installation by Sari Nordman We first featured a brief sneak peek at this art installation in our April newsletter, with a behind the scenes look at Sari making frame prototypes in our welding zone. The finished installation, entitled Tower, is now on display from July 1 to Aug 7 at King Manor Museum, 150-03 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, NY. Tower is a multi-media, interdisciplinary piece which utilizes sculpture, media projection and community participation to reflect on climate change. The piece was inspired by the biblical story of The Tower of Babel, a tale of greed and the value of cultural differences. Sari will be discussing the project during a live talk at Hunter’s Point Environmental Center on July 10th at 2pm.

  • David N. Deutsch Is the Principal of His Self -Named Investment Banking Firm in Manhattan
Interview with David Deutsch MONDAY, 14 AUGUST 2006 David N. Deutsch is the principal of his self -named investment banking firm in Manhattan. Raised in the Capital Region, Mr Deutsch makes a point of returning home each summer as part of his Saratoga Weekend conference retreat with members of his extended business and personal networks. This year’s invitation-only edition is slated for Thursday thru Saturday of this week, complete with panel discussions, networking sessions and social gatherings at the races and polo matches in the Spa City. While spending some time together recently at the Saratoga races, Mr. Deutsch and Tech Valley Times principal Robert Millis discussed a wide variety of subjects in anticipation of the Saratoga Weekend. TVT: Take us back to the beginning -- your local roots. DD: Like you, I went to Saratoga High School – go Blue Streaks! I graduated in the Top 10, along with your cousin Tammy and the soon-to-be famous David Hyde Pierce (note: the actor who played the part of Niles on the Frasier television series) in 1977. TVT: Where’d you go to college? DD: I went to Middlebury College, originally pre-med. I was a physics - turned - economics major. TVT: Then what? DD: Upon graduation, I went to work for Lehman Brothers in institutional sales & trading in NYC at the beginning of the ‘80s bull market. It was exactly like the story in Liar’s Poker --- Michael Lewis was in an identical program at Salomon Brothers at the same time. I began as a corporate bond trader; Lehman’s bond desk was/is legendary.

  • Assessment of Public Comment on Draft Trout Stream Management Plan
Assessment of public comments on draft New York State Trout Stream Management Plan OCTOBER 27, 2020 Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor | Basil Seggos, Commissioner A draft of the Fisheries Management Plan for Inland Trout Streams in New York State (Plan) was released for public review on May 26, 2020 with the comment period extending through June 25, 2020. Public comment was solicited through a variety of avenues including: • a posting of the statewide public comment period in the Environmental Notice Bulletin (ENB), • a DEC news release distributed statewide, • an announcement distributed to all e-mail addresses provided by participants at the 2017 and 2019 public meetings on trout stream management described on page 11 of the Plan [353 recipients, 181 unique opens (58%)], and • an announcement distributed to all subscribers to the DEC Delivers Freshwater Fishing and Boating Group [138,122 recipients, 34,944 unique opens (26%)]. A total of 489 public comments were received through e-mail or letters (Appendix A, numbered 1-277 and 300-511). 471 of these comments conveyed specific concerns, recommendations or endorsements; the other 18 comments were general statements or pertained to issues outside the scope of the plan. General themes to recurring comments were identified (22 total themes), and responses to these are included below. These themes only embrace recommendations or comments of concern. Comments that represent favorable and supportive views are not included in this assessment. Duplicate comment source numbers associated with a numbered theme reflect comments on subtopics within the general theme. Theme #1 The statewide catch and release (artificial lures only) season proposed to run from October 16 through March 31 poses a risk to the sustainability of wild trout populations and the quality of the fisheries they support that is either wholly unacceptable or of great concern, particularly in some areas of the state; notably Delaware/Catskill waters.

This file is part of the following reference: Colclough, Gillian (2008) The measure of the woman : eugenics and domestic science in the 1924 sociological survey of white women in North Queensland. PhD thesis, James Cook University. Access to this file is available from: http://eprints.jcu.edu.au/5266 THE MEASURE OF THE WOMAN: EUGENICS AND DOMESTIC SCIENCE IN THE 1924 SOCIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF WHITE WOMEN IN NORTH QUEENSLAND Thesis submitted by Gillian Beth COLCLOUGH, BA (Hons) WA on February 11 2008 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Arts and Social Sciences James Cook University Abstract This thesis considers experiences of white women in Queensland‟s north in the early years of „white‟ Australia, in this case from Federation until the late 1920s. Because of government and health authority interest in determining issues that might influence the health and well-being of white northern women, and hence their families and a future white labour force, in 1924 the Institute of Tropical Medicine conducted a comprehensive Sociological Survey of White Women in selected northern towns. Designed to address and resolve concerns of government and medical authorities with anxieties about sanitation, hygiene and eugenic wellbeing, the Survey used domestic science criteria to measure the health knowledge of its subjects: in so doing, it gathered detailed information about their lives. Guided by the Survey assessment categories, together with local and overseas literature on racial ideas, the thesis examines salient social and scientific concerns about white women in Queensland‟s tropical north and in white-dominated societies elsewhere and considers them against the oral reminiscences of women who recalled their lives in the North for the North Queensland Oral History Project.
