Robert A. Oden Jr. was the president of Carleton College from 2002-2010, president of Kenyon College from 1995 to 2002 and headmaster of the Hotchkiss School from 1989 to 1995. President Oden holds a BA from Harvard College and advanced degrees from the Harvard Divinity School and from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Marshall scholar. He earned a PhD in Near Eastern languages and literature from Harvard University. He was a professor in the Department of Religion at Dartmouth College, where he received Dartmouth’s first Distinguished Teaching Award. During his tenure at Dartmouth, he twice served as the academic director and lecturer on a Dartmouth Alumni Seminar Abroad: “Egypt, the Red Sea, and Jordan.” He has been on the Board of Trustees of the American University in Cairo since 1990. He and Teresa led a Carleton trip to Egypt in 2008.

Oden is the author of five books, including The Bible Without Theology, and scores of scholarly articles, as well as a number of articles on fly-fishing. His chief research interests are in ancient Near East languages and history and comparative religion. In 1989 he was selected to be among the first of the Teaching Company’s “Superstar Teachers,” recording several series of lectures on comparative religion and the Old Testament

Teresa Oden earned a BA in classics from Brandeis University. She has worked as a computer programmer and as an administrator in the nonprofit sector and has published articles and a book about issues facing the partners of academic leaders. Passionate about local history, she wrote about college history for the Kenyon College Alumni Bulletin and, after moving to Minnesota, she wrote a history play in honor of Northfield’s sesquicentennial in 2005. A resident of Hanover, NH since 2010, she has now shifted her research and writing to that town’s history. Teresa enjoys gardening and “just about anything that requires handling beautiful fabrics.”

Robin Weber Pollak, Carleton Class of 2004 and director of JOURNEYS International, will also accompany the trip. Robin worked for five years in experiential education and received an MBA from The George Washington University before returning to JOURNEYS, a family business that has offered worldwide nature and culture adventures since 1978.
