JOYFUL JANUARY 2018 IN MUSIC CLASSES!

A GLANCE AT WHAT’S AHEAD IN MUSIC!

During January, our music classes will be actively participating in a variety of musical endeavors.

As an overview, January will be a time of discovery for all our students. We’ll celebrate the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and sing Elvis Presley songs for his birthday!

The 5th graders will continue to learn about various genres of music, compare and contrast genres, and graph their favorite genres. They will begin practicing for the 4/5 music program, “ROCK ON!”

1 The 4th graders will start practicing for the 4/5 music program, “ROCK ON!” They will also discover rhythm patterns in words we use every day.

The 2nd graders will review forte and piano, and sing and move to a variety of winter songs. We’ll also connect literacy with music during our TALL TALES studies, as well as compare and contrast songs.

The 3rd graders have completed the musical, “Love and Kindness,” We discussed the overall meaning of the musical. The 3rd graders will also connect literacy into music with TALL TALES, as well as compare and contrast songs. We will start the “ THE CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS”.

The 1st graders and Mrs. Noonan’s class will meet several new puppets as we listen to, move, and discuss “The Carnival of the Animals.” The students will bring their own interpretations of the music and animals to life during music classes. And, we’ll compare and contrast the various melodies and interpretive movements. We’ll use our imaginations as we pretend to build snowmen through song!

In addition, all students will celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through songs and poems. We’ll sing well-known Elvis songs as a birthday tribute to “The King of Rock and Roll!”

Lesson Plans are always available on the Owen Marsh website, Teachers, von Liski, Lesson Plans.

2 MUSIC QUOTES TO PONDER

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent” ― Victor Hugo

“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.” ― Albert Einstein

“We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.” ― Arthur O'Shaughnessy, Poems of Arthur O'Shaughnessy

CONSIDER ADOPTING YOUR OWN FAMILY THEME SONG!

Just like background music in a movie or on a television show can cue you into a character’s state of mind or what is happening in the story line, so can selecting your own family theme song! Playing it out loud or just in your head can boost your mood for the better! Go for a happy song, like “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves or “Dancing Queen” by ABBA. Your theme song may help put some pep into your step!

MUSICAL FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Why not have a family discussion about how music affects each one of you? You could look up other quotes, use your ideas, and put together

3 a small booklet -- musical recipes incorporating musical thoughts. This “recipe” ties together with your Family Theme Song!
