The Trinity Times The Trinity Times The Newsletter of Trinity Presbyterian Church January, 2012 FROM OUR MINISTRY ASSOCIATE Dear friends, EVENTS IN JANUARY 1 “Remove the Greens” after We’re off to a new year! Based on a very unscientific Worship survey of my friends and family, I confirmed the results of a real survey that I read a few weeks ago: 6 David Olney Coffeehouse Concert/ most people didn’t consider 2011 to be a very good 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary year. It’s not hard to understand why — economic 15 Youth Group after worship; lunch malaise, polarized political noise, ongoing wars, and provided more. Consequently, most people that I’ve spoken with are looking forward to 2012 as a chance at a 21 Presbytery LEAD Workshop/ fresh start. 8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. at First Presbyterian of Franklin That idea, the fresh start at the beginning of the new Young Adult Potluck/5 p.m. - 7 year, isn’t a surprising one. The truth is that we do it p.m./Place to be announced every year. It’s a bit of a curious phenomenon, isn’t 22 Soup and Chili Potluck after it? Why would we wait until the calendar changes to worship in the Fellowship Hall get a fresh start? There are a few ways to look at it: Sara Crigger Recital/3 p.m. in the Sanctuary First, we could say that it is silly to make such a big deal of the new year. After all, we as Christians claim be inscribed and sealed for a good year.” The the promise from Lamentations 3:22-23 that “The passage in Leviticus goes on to say that ten days steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies after this New Year’s Day was the Day of never come to an end; they are new every morning; Atonement, called Yom Kippur. God instituted great is your faithfulness.” If God’s mercies are new these ceremonial days, despite the abundance and every morning, then we don’t have to wait until New continuity of His grace, as a marker for people to Year’s Day to live differently. We also know, as we intentionally set their hearts and minds in a new read in Ephesians 2:8-9 that “...by grace you have way of thinking and acting. been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God — not the result of works, In January of 2012, I expect that both of the above so that no one may boast.” So we know that there’s realities will be present to us. We will surely know nothing that we need to do in particular to make that that God’s grace is always for us, and we will also fresh start. It’s God’s gift of grace to us! So we be marking a fresh start with some degree of could say that the start of the new year is no big ceremony. • STEVE YOUNG LL July 2021
STEVE YOUNG - LYRICS Steven Timothy Young, 12th July 1942 - 17th March 2016 Compiled by Robin Dunn assisted by Chrissie van Varik. Please note that this list should be regarded as a ‘work in progress’. We don’t claim definitive knowledge about Steve Young’s recorded and composing output and welcome corrections and/or new information. Many folks will have greater knowledge than we about the details on many of these tracks - musicians, dates of recordings, background etc. As anyone with any experience of these things knows, something new and unexpected is always turning up! If anyone epitomises the title of our website it has to be Steve Young. He covered the full gamut of folk, country, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll. Not so well known with the general music-buying public he was nevertheless a huge influence on contemporary and upcoming folk and country musicians many of whom went on to become famous in their own right. Perceived as somewhat of an independent country and folk outsider he was a pioneer of the country rock, Americana, and Alt. Country sounds and often seen as the original so called ‘outlaw’ a label later adopted and inculcated by Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson among others. However, Steve Young’s repertoire was much wider and varied. Steve Young was born on 12th July 1942 in Newnan, Georgia. He grew up in Gadsden, Alabama, and in Texas, as the family regularly moved around in search of work. By the time he completed high school he was playing and writing songs that incorporated influences of folk, blues, country and gospel that he absorbed whilst travelling throughout the South.

Ladysmith Black Mambazou, too, would Swansongs win Grammy Awards—five in all, the last in 2018 for Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Celebration as Best World Music Album. They would also collaborate with the likes of Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Mavis Staples, and appear in the Michael Jackson filmMoonwalker . They earned a Tony nomination for their score for the 1993 Broadway play The Song of Jacob Zulu, in which they performed as a chorus. And that same year, they accompanied Nelson Mandela to Oslo when he accepted his Nobel Peace Prize. Bhekizizwe Joseph Siphatimandla Mxo- veni Mshengu Bigboy Shabalala was born on Aug. 28, 1941, on a white-owned farm near the town of Ladysmith, out in the hills of KwaZulu-Natal, where his parents, Jon- athan Mluwane Shabalala and Nomandla Elina Shabalala, worked. Joseph, the eldest of eight children, left school at 12, after his father died. As a teenager, he moved to Durban to work in a textile factory and sang in local vocal groups—the Durban Choir Swansongs and The Highlanders. In 1959, he formed Ezimnyama, which he renamed Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They featured several of Shabalala’s brothers and cousins singing. The mbube and isicathamiya music that the all-male group sang originally emerged from the mining camps and industrial worksites created by migrant workers toiling far from home. Singing late into the 1947-2019 night, they established harmony singing contests to relieve their after-work boredom. These contests played a significant role in the development of traditional choral music 1941-2020 in South Africa.
