In the early twentieth century, many philosophers began to reject Kantian and Hegelian approaches to the question of God and the philosophy of religion. The challenge was then to formulate a new way of talking about God within philosophy without necessarily having to revert to pre-modern accounts. These thinkers saw the importance of retaining the insights of modernity while also taking into account the Romantic and post-Romantic critiques of modernism as a one- sided or overly rationalistic enterprise. This dissertation seeks to provide a comprehensive picture of the approaches of Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Heidegger to rethinking the question of how philosophy is to proceed, especially in light of religious phenomena. Placing Rosenzweig and Heidegger in dialogue helps to further our understanding of both figures, particularly insofar as Rosenzweig’s thought might be used as a corrective to possible shortcomings in the later Heidegger. Many scholars have argued that there is something problematic about Heidegger’s religious thought, but Rosenzweig has been almost completely overlooked as an important corrective resource. Both Rosenzweig’s comprehensive account of the basic phenomena of human existence and his grammatical method for formulating this account share many of Heidegger’s insights, yet surpass them insofar as Rosenzweig is able to address the topic in a more philosophically cogent manner. -

Das ‚weibliche akademische Subjekt‘ – eine Forschungsnotiz Susanne Maurer In diesem Beitrag wird darauf hingewiesen, dass feministisch-kritische Stu- dien, die die unterschiedlichen Versuche, sich als ‚denkende Frau‘ zu entwer- fen und auch zu autorisieren, (werk-)biographisch rekonstruieren und in einer machtanalytischen Perspektive mit diskurs- und bewegungsgeschichtlichen Kontexten verknüpfen, noch weitgehend ausstehen. Die von ihr vorgeschla- gene Forschungsperspektive richtet sich aus an den Fragen, wie sich ‚weibli- che Subjekte‘ im Feld des Akademischen in der Vergangenheit tatsächlich si- tuieren konnten, welche Strategien der Teilhabe sie vor dem Hintergrund ih- res ‚systematischen Ausschlusses‘ entwickelten und wie sie ‚das Akademi- sche‘ selbst reflektierten. Maurer erinnert in diesem Zusammenhang an einen Essay von Marianne Schuller (1984) zum Verhältnis von ‚weiblicher Intel- lektualität‘ und Macht und nimmt in einem zweiten Schritt beispielhaft auf eine der ersten Pädagogik-Professorinnen (Elisabeth Blochmann, 1892-1972) und deren Selbstrealisierung als Wissenschaftlerin und Hochschullehrerin Bezug. The `female academic subject` – a research note Susanne Maurer emphasizes in her article the clear lack of critical feminist studies which reconstruct the diverse attempts of conceptualizing oneself as a “qualified” female intellec- tual. Her suggested research perspective focuses on questions such as, how ‘female sub- jects’ of the past could situate themselves within the academic power-field; which strate- gies of participation did they develop being confronted with the systematic exclusion of women, and how did they reflect the academic sphere itself? Maurer suggests a perspective which connects a power-analytical approach inspired by Michel Foucault with exegetical, biographical, discourse-analytical and historical perspectives, taking the collective dimen- sion of feminist movements as an historical context also into account. -

This Bibliography of English Translations of the Writigs of Martin Heidegger details the history of translations into English of Heidegger’s books, essays, lecture courses, book reviews, poetry and letters (1949-2011). It begins with a list of the volumes of the Heidegger Gesamtausgabe (= GA [1975- ] published to date, to which the entries are keyed. The “Master Bibliography” is followed by a “Supplemental Bibliography: Heidegger and Politics” and a bibliography of “Unpublished Translations” available online. It concludes with two lists of the translators, the first keyed to an alphanumeric code at the end of each entry {} and the other giving the titles of the translators’ contributions. For the scholar’s convenience, several other bibliographies have been created. -

Disambiguating Rilke and Heidegger
Modern Theology 00:00 Month 2018 DOI: 10.1111/moth.12458 ISSN 0266-7177 (Print) ISSN 1468-0025 (Online) “SUPERABUNDANT BEING”: DISAMBIGUATING RILKE AND HEIDEGGER THOMAS PFAU Abstract Rilke’s impact on the generation of writers reshaping philosophy and theology during the interwar years is arguably without parallel. Within this constellation, the case of Heidegger as a reader of Rilke presents unique challenges. For Rilke’s poetry neither quite allows for a wholly appropriative reading such as, for better or worse, Heidegger accords Hölderlin’s oeuvre; nor can Heidegger quite bring himself to subject Rilke’s poetry to critical appraisal. Instead, Heidegger’s analysis of Dasein as worked out in Part I of Being and Time (1927) and in his lectures on The Basic Concepts of Metaphysics (1929) seems haunted by an intellectual and expressive debt to Rilke that he can neither acknowledge nor fully resolve. For to do so would be to confront a possibility of human finitude, so luminously traced in Rilke’s Duino Elegies (1922), still defined by moments of transcendence – moments that can be captured in the fleeting plenitude of poetic intuition (Anschauung) and lyric image (Bild). Whereas von Balthasar, in volume 3 of his Apokalypse der deutschen Seele (1939), reads Rilke as fundamentally embracing Heidegger’s notion of strictly immanent and finite Dasein, I argue that the oeuvre of the later Rilke, without being reclaimed for a metaphysical, let alone religious position, nevertheless is shaped, both intellectually and expressively, by insistent, if enigmatic, moments of transcendence. I With the possible exception of Hölderlin, no German poet has had greater resonance in twentieth-century intellectual culture than Rilke. -

Die Stadt, von der man sagt, dass sie eine Univer- sität sei und nicht nur eine habe, kann über die Jahrhunderte hin- weg ein lebhaftes Kultur- und Wirtschaftsleben aufweisen. Dieses wurde gleichermaßen von Frauen und Männern geprägt. Der Leistung bekannter Männer zollen Städte und Gemeinden seit jeher Achtung, indem sie Straßen, Plätze oder Brücken nach ihnen benennen. Eine schöne Tradition, die aber bekannten Frauen – wie in den meisten Städten, so auch in Marburg – bisher nur selten zuteil wurde. Unter den ohnehin wenigen nach Frauen benannten Straßen finden sich selten Namen von Marburgerin- nen oder Frauen, die eine Zeit in Marburg gelebt haben. Die Leis- tungen, die Geschichte und oft genug auch die Namen zahlrei- cher bedeutender Marburger Frauen sind in Vergessenheit gera- ten, obwohl sie ein Teil der Geschichte der Stadt sind. Schon seit Beginn der 1990er Jahre hat die Frauenbeauftragte der Stadt Marburg auf dieses Missverhältnis der Straßenbenen- nungen aufmerksam gemacht. Die Anregung wurde insbesondere von den Parlamentarierinnen aufgegriffen, so dass bei der Verga- be von Straßennamen im Stadtwald 1994/95 erste Erfolge erzielt werden konnten. Dass dies nur ein Anfang sein kann, belegt der gegenwärtige prozentuale Anteil von Straßen und Plätzen, die nach Frauen benannt sind.
