DOI: 10.4312/as.2019.7.2.47-86 47 Transmission of Han Pictorial Motifs into the Western Periphery: Fuxi and Nüwa in the Wei-Jin Mural Tombs in the Hexi Corridor*8 ∗∗ Nataša VAMPELJ SUHADOLNIK 9 Abstract This paper examines the ways in which Fuxi and Nüwa were depicted inside the mu- ral tombs of the Wei-Jin dynasties along the Hexi Corridor as compared to their Han counterparts from the Central Plains. Pursuing typological, stylistic, and iconographic approaches, it investigates how the western periphery inherited the knowledge of the divine pair and further discusses the transition of the iconographic and stylistic design of both deities from the Han (206 BCE–220 CE) to the Wei and Western Jin dynasties (220–316). Furthermore, examining the origins of the migrants on the basis of historical records, it also attempts to discuss the possible regional connections and migration from different parts of the Chinese central territory to the western periphery. On the basis of these approaches, it reveals that the depiction of Fuxi and Nüwa in Gansu area was modelled on the Shandong regional pattern and further evolved into a unique pattern formed by an iconographic conglomeration of all attributes and other physical characteristics. Accordingly, the Shandong region style not only spread to surrounding areas in the central Chinese territory but even to the more remote border regions, where it became the model for funerary art motifs. After being a visiting member at the Courant Institute of NYU and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, he joined the faculty at NYU in 1994. He is now a professor of mathematics at Princeton University, a position he has held since 1999. He is also a Changjiang professor at the Peking University. Weinan E’s research interest is in multiscale and stochastic modeling. His work covers issues that include mathematical foundation of stochastic and multiscale modeling, design and analysis of of algorithms and applications to problems in various disciplines of science and engineering, with particular emphasis on the modeling of rare events, material sciences and fluid dynamics. Weinan E is the recipient of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the Feng Kang Prize, the SIAM R. E. Kleinman Prize, and the ICIAM Collatz Prize. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, a SIAM fellow and a fellow of the Institute of Physics. Mathematical theory of solids: From quantum mechanics to continuum models Abstract The problem of trying to understand solids from microscopic and macroscopic viewpoints goes back to Cauchy and was taken up again by Born. In this talk, I will present the progress that has been made on this Cauchy-Born program. In particular, I will discuss how macroscopic continuum models of solids can be derived from models of quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics. -

Noah's Ark Hidden in the Ancient Chinese Characters
Papers Noah’s Ark hidden in the ancient Chinese characters — Voo, Sheeley & Hovee from chapters six to nine.4 The Chinese also have a similar Noah’s Ark story. Notably, a great flood that occurred as a result of the rebellion of a group of people during the legendary period hidden in the (about 2500 BC). In the text of Huai Nan Zi (南子, written in 200 BC),5 legend states that in ancient times, the poles (north, south, east and west) that supported the roof of the ancient Chinese world were broken. As a result, the heavens were broken and the nine states of China experienced continental shift characters and split. Fire broke out and the water from the heavens could not be stopped, causing a flood. Frank Who was the greater economist—Adam Smith or Charles Darwin? The question seems absurd. Darwin, after all, was a naturalist, not an economist. But Robert Frank, New York Times economics columnist and best-selling author of The Economic Naturalist, predicts that within the next century Darwin will un- seat Smith as the intellectual founder of economics. The reason, Frank argues, is that Darwin’s understanding of competition describes economic reality far more accurately than Smith’s. And the consequences of this fact are profound. Indeed, the failure to recognize that we live in Darwin’s world rather than Smith’s is putting us all at risk by preventing us from seeing that competition alone will not solve our problems. Smith’s theory of the invisible hand, which says that competition channels self-interest for the common good, is probably the most widely cited argument today in favor of unbridled competition—and against regulation, taxation, and even government itself. -

Che: Five Gems in the Torrent 235 Five Gems in the Torrent: Historical Portrayals of Chinese Women in Sound and Religion Yuchi Che ABSTRACT: In the long history of the patriarchal culture of China, women were consistently stigmatized as naïve. What made this situation worse was the mentality that—“a woman who lacks talent is a virtuous woman”1—a famous quote, which had became the standard to measure the qualities of a woman. This portrayal was quite permanent throughout the cultural history of China, as even today, this stereotype is still prominent in the poor, rural, and illiterate areas of China. This paper highlights in a chronological fashion the portrayal of the woman in the Chinese culture through sound, music, religion, and mythology. To reverse this cultural pattern, Su Zheng, in her work Redefining Yin and Yang: Transformation of Gender/Sexual Politics in Chinese Music, considers 235 236 HARVARD SQUARE SYMPOSIUM | THE FUTURE OF KNOWLEDGE that it is logical and useful to apply the western ways of learning music and gender to the Chinese one since, as she believes, “each culture is not an isolated authentic entity waiting to be ‘discovered’ and added to the exotic palette of world gender ideologies.”3 1) The Beginnings In the Chinese cosmogony it is said that the universe was created by leaving behind an imperfect world. -

Drawing on papers presented at two conferences co-organized by the U.S. National Defense University, RAND, and Taiwan’s Council REFORMS MILITARY CHINESE ASSESSING of Advanced Policy Studies, this edited volume brings together some of the world’s best experts on the Chinese military to analyze the various dimensions of the reforms in detail and assess their implications for the PLA’s ability to conduct joint operations, for the Chinese Communist Party’s control of the army, and for civil-military integration. The contributors review the drivers and strategic context under- pinning the reform effort, explore the various dimensions of PLA efforts to build a force capable of conducting joint operations, con- sider the implications for the PLA services, and examine Xi Jinping’s role in driving the reforms through and using them to strengthen control over the military. The chapters chronicle successes and outstanding problems in the reform effort, and consider what the net effect will be as the PLA strives to become a “world- class” military by mid-century, if not much sooner.
