Russian spaceship delivers three astronauts to space station (Update) 19 November 2016 Whitson, 56, is an experienced veteran and biochemistry expert who will break records with this space mission, including the title of the most days in space by a US astronaut. She is scheduled to surpass NASA astronaut Jeff Williams's 534 days on April 24. In February, Whitson will become the first woman to command the space station twice. She previously commanded the station in 2007, when she became the first woman to hold this post, NASA said. Their arrival means the staff at the orbiting outpost goes back up to six. An issue with the parachute's deployment caused a partial loss of pressurization inside the capsule. Credit: NASA/Bill Ingalls WASHINGTON — A Soyuz spacecraft returning three people to Earth in April experienced a partial loss of pressure during the fnal stages of its descent, but did not put the crew’s lives in danger. The incident, revealed during an Oct. 16 meeting of NASA’s International Space Station Advisory Committee, is one of a series of events that have raised questions about the reliability of Russian vehicles supporting the station. A buckle that is part of the parachute system struck the capsule. “The buckle struck a welding seam and, as a result, there was a depressurizing event that resulted in some air escaping the capsule,” he said. Staford didn’t identify the specifc mission where this took place, other than to say that it happened in April of this year. The only Soyuz spacecraft to return to Earth that month was Soyuz MS-02, which landed April 10. -

This Edition has been compiled to celebrate 30years of Space Shuttle missions and to coincide with the last mission. NASA's greatest achievement was the creation of a reusable spacecraft. The Apollo spacecraft cost an astronomical sum to produce and were single-use only. The heat from Earth's atmosphere essentially disintegrated the shielding used to protect the spacecraft. The spacecraft also landed in the ocean, and the impact and sea water damaged the equipment. To remedy this, NASA built a spacecraft that had two rocket launchers attached to an external fuel tank and an orbiter module. They coated the spacecraft with protective heat-resistant ceramic tiles and changed the landing design to a glider-style. It took nine years of preparation, from 1972 to 1981, before the first mission. I would like to thank NASA/JPL and ESA for the information that has been compiled in this special edition. -

Shane Kimbrough Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired) NASA Astronaut Summary: R. Shane Kimbrough was selected by NASA in 2004. He completed his first spaceflight in 2008 on STS-126, where he spent almost 16 days on the mission to expand the crew living quarters to accommodate a six-member crew. During the mission, he performed two spacewalks. Kimbrough earned a Master of Science degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Before being selected as an astronaut, Kimbrough joined NASA in 2000 as a Flight Simulation Engineer (FSE) on the Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA). Kimbrough flew on the Expedition 49/50 mission where he performed 4 spacewalks and has now logged in a total of 189 days in space. Personal Data: Born June 4, 1967, in Killeen, Texas. Married to the former Robbie Lynn Nickels of Marietta, Georgia. They have three children. He enjoys baseball, golf, weightlifting and running. His father, Lt. Col. (ret.) Robert W. Kimbrough, resides in Hudson, Florida. His mother, DeAnn Johnson, resides in Fernandina Beach, Florida. Her parents, Robert and Carol Nickels, reside in Savannah, Georgia. Education: Graduated from The Lovett School, Atlanta, Georgia, in 1985; received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, in 1989 and a Master of Science degree in Operations Research from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998.
