Bell and Sons, 1883 ; price 12s. 6d., pp. 329.)—Writing in 1814, Mr. Dawson Turner said, " There is no English Antiquary to whom the science is more indebted " than to Mr. Eoach Smith. Almost forty years later, Mr. J. Q-. Waller has recently written in the Dover Standard:— " The establishment of Archaeological Societies, in this country, is chiefly due to Mr. Charles Roach Smith. The first step arose from a conversation between him and Mr. Thomas "Wright, at which I was present, .... in Mr. Smith's room at Lothbury." The result of that conversation was the formation of the British Archaeological Association, with Lord Albert Conyngham as Presi- dent. The first Archeeological Congress assembled in 1843, at Canterbury, where, says Mr. Eoach Smith, in his Retrospections, " I and Thomas Wright, my acting colleague (for Mr. Albert Way, appointed co-secretary with me, did not attend), took up our abode at the Queen's Head. Here we were joined by Joseph Clarke, J. O. Halliwell, Thomas Bateman, Alfred Dunltin, W. Addison Combs, and the Rev. Stephen Isaacson." The Retrospections of an Antiquary who is the true parent of all existing Archaeological Societies, cannot fail to be of interest to their members. This volume is clearly printed, and abounds in amusing episodes. Some readers no doubt will chafe at its lack of chronological arrangement, and at the utter absence of dates; but all will agree that its matter is pleasantly put together and full of interest.

The timing of the committee’s establishment, its membership and appeal to the British public, and the changes brought about in its operations by the change of government in 1880 form a case study of the interweaving of British party politics with philhellenism. In the late 1870s, British philhellenism, that is, interest in the affairs of modern Greece and the advocacy of the “Greek cause”, should be viewed within the framework of liberal and radical concerns for the formation of a “true English policy” in foreign affairs, based on the long-standing British interest in continental nationalities. In early 1878, Greece enlisted the support of a small group of British Liberal MPs.

XCVii EOCHESTER.—During the adaptation of old premises to modern requirements at No. 166 High Street, a sixteenth-century wing with gabled roof, in rear of the shop, was cleared out. In an upper room the seventeenth-century pitch-pine panelling on being removed revealed some interesting distemper wall painting upon the plastered walls behind it. A small portion only remained of the original decoration, and this I was allowed to cut out, together with one of the oak quarterings, upon which the design wras con- tinued.* The quarterings measured 5\ inches in width, and were placed 2 feet 6 inches apart. The whole room had been painted, including all the quarterings, corner timbers, and wall-plate; which must have been a most laborious task. @6ftuarp $,otue* GEOEGE MATTHEWS AENOLD, F.S.A. By the death of Mr. George Matthews Arnold of Gravesend, which occurred at his residence there on the 28th May last (1908), the Society have lost one of their original Members—one who had been for many years on the Council, and who had in every way in his power shewed himself an active and zealous Member of our Society. Mr. Arnold was born on the 4th July 1827 at Gravesend, where his family had been long settled, and throughout his life he devoted himself to the service of his native town. He was no less than eight times Mayor of the Borough; he presented it with many gifts, and did a great deal to raise the dignity and importance of the town.

This article surveys the fiercely contested posthumous assessments of John Stuart Mill in the newspaper and periodical press, in the months following his death in May 1873, and elicits the broader intellectual context. Judgements made in the immediate wake of Mill’s death influence biographers and historians to this day and provide an illuminating aperture into the politics and shifting ideological forces of the period. The article considers how Mill’s failure to control his posthumous reputation demonstrates both the inextricable intertwining of politics and character in the 1870s, and the difficulties his allies faced. In particular, it shows the sharp division between Mill’s middle and working class admirers; the use of James Mill’s name as a rebuke to his son; the redefinition of Malthusianism in the 1870s; and how publication of Mill’s Autobiography damaged his reputation. Finally, the article considers the relative absence of both theological and Darwinian critiques of Mill. John Stuart Mill was killed by his kindness to nightingales. That, at least, was the ‘poetical end’ ascribed to him by the secularist campaigner George Jacob Holyoake. The miasma that killed Mill might have been mitigated by fresh breezes if only he had allowed the trees clustered around his Avignon retreat to be felled; his refusal to do so, according to Holyoake, was out of admiration for the ‘independent-minded birds’, which would have resented undue ‘interference with the privilege of their leafy home’.1 In truth, the cause of Mill’s death was more prosaic: on 5 May 1873 he suffered ‘a virulent form of erysipelas’.2 The inflammation of the skin, accompanied by fever, proved too much.

Bell and Sons, 1883 ; price 12s. 6d., pp. 329.)—Writing in 1844, Mr. Dawson Turner said, " There is no English Antiquary to whom the science is more indebted " than to Mr. Eoach Smith. Almost forty years later, Mr. J. G. Waller has recently written in the Dover Standard:— " The establishment of Archaeological Societies, in this country, is chiefly due to Mr. Charles Roach Smith. The first step arose from a conversation between him and Mr. Thomas Wright, at which I was present, .... in Mr. Smith's room at Lothbury." The result of that conversation was the formation of the British Archaeological Association, with Lord Albert Conyngham as Presi- dent. The first Archeeological Congress assembled in 1843, at Canterbury, where, says Mr. Eoach Smith, in his Retrospections, " I and Thomas Wright, my acting colleague (for Mr. Albert Way, appointed co-seoretary with me, did not attend), took up our abode at the Queen's Head. Here we were joined by Joseph Clarke, J. O. Halliwell, Thomas Bateman, Alfred Dunkin, W. Addison Combs, and the Rev. Stephen Isaacson." The Retrospections of an Antiquary who is the true parent of all existing Archaeological Societies, cannot fail to be of interest to their members. This volume is clearly printed, and abounds in amusing episodes. Some readers no doubt will chafe at its lack of chronological arrangement, and at the utter absence of dates; but all will agree that its matter is pleasantly put together and full of interest.
