  • Wilder and Wilder: Deontay's Threats to Breazeale Hard to Hear, Hard
Wilder and Wilder: Deontay’s threats to Breazeale hard to hear, hard to excuse By Norm Frauenheim- Deontay Wilder has more words than punches. At last check, the words are rocking the social-media landscape. Wilder has been all over the place this week with talk that has been either condemned by those who hear death threats or dismissed by those who hear just another boxer with a cliched promise to kill an opponent. Maybe, it has all been more grist for a media mill with an ever-escalating lust for the sensational. Or, maybe, it’s just stupid. Or, in perhaps a more cynical take, it’s just another heated step up in an effort to hype a hard- to-sell fight. In a sport with an orderly business plan, Saturday would have been a rematch of Wilder’s compelling – and controversial — draw with Tyson Fury. Instead, we get Wilder versus Dominic Breazeale. In boxing, that’s called business as usual. Still, some of what Wilder has said is hard to ignore. Example: “This is the only sport where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time. It’s legal, so why not use my right to do so? “His life is on the line for this fight and I do mean his life. I’m still trying to get me a body on my record.” A boxing license is not a license to kill. Death in the ring happens, sometimes by match-making so horrible as to be criminal and sometimes by licensing of fighters who should never have been cleared medically.

Nicknaming of individual athletes and sports teams is a multifaceted phenomenon the analysis of which reveals numerous reasons for choosing a particular name or nickname. The practice of nicknaming has become so embedded in the concept of sport that it requires exceptional attention by those who create these labels. The goal of this research was to analyse the semantic structure of boxers’ nicknames, i.e. the possible principles of their formation. To realize the research aims 378 male boxers’ nicknames, predominantly in the English language, were collected. The nicknames were allocated to semantic categories according to the content area or areas they referred to. Counts and percentages were calculated for the nicknames in each subsample created with regard to the number of semantic categories used to create a boxer’s nickname and for the group of nicknames allocated to the miscellaneous group. Counts were calculated for all groups within each subsample. Key words: hero, association, figurative language, figures of speech 1. INTRODUCTION Are nicknames only arbitrary formations of little account or are they coinages contrived meticulously and with a lot of prowess? Skipper (1989, 103) alleges that nicknames “often serve as a miniature character sketch”. When discussing nicknames in baseball, Gmelch (2006, 129) elucidates that sobriquets frequently communicate something about the players using them, e.g.

Name: Michael Gerard "Mike" Tyson Years: June 30, 1966 to Present Residence: Scottsdale, Arizona Brief Biography: “Iron” Mike Tyson was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 30th, 1966. After his father abandoned him and his mother passed away, Tyson was adopted by Cus D’Amato, a boxing manager and trainer. Tyson moved frequently around New York and was a trouble child at a young age. In fact, Tyson was already arrested 38 times by the age of thirteen. Tyson was introduced to boxing by Bobby Stewart, a former boxer and juvenile detention center counselor, in Johnstown, a town in Fulton County. Tyson went on to win a silver medal in the 1982 Junior Olympic Games, where he won every fight by knockout. The 16-year-old also set a world record by knocking out an opponent in a mere eight seconds. His professional career began in March 1985 in Albany, where he beat Hector Mercedes in a first round knockout. Tyson went on to win 26 of his first 28 fights by KO. His first nationally televised fight was in Troy in February 1985, where he knocked out Jesse Ferguson in six rounds. Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion ever in November 1986 when, at the age of 20, he captured the WBC heavyweight championship after knocking out Trevor Berbick in two rounds. In March 1987, Tyson added the WBA heavyweight championship to his résumé after defeating James Smith. Only five months later, Tyson became the undisputed heavyweight champion after capturing the IBF heavyweight championship from Tony Tucker in a twelve-round unanimous decision.
