In days when courage is needed, You give us this woman of strength to walk before us with conviction. In days of great change, You present us with a prophet whose faith is firm, as the light of her lantern brought hope into the lives made wretched by poverty and oppression. So may she inspire us to compassionate action for those in need around us. Amen. Everyone is invited to celebrate Nano Nagle this Friday at the 9.15am School Liturgy. Newsletter: If you wish to receive the Newsletter via email please let us know or write your details in the Pink Communications Book in the foyer. There are some handouts in foyer if anyone would like to read more about dementia and brain health. At the next meeting on May 15th, Donna Honan, a Volunteer with the Qld Police Service Crime Prevention Unit will be attending. The highlight of Donna’s talk will be Senior Safety and Crime Prevention. This should also be very informative and interesting. Please mark your calendar and come along with a plate to share. All welcome. Easter Water: If anyone would like to take home some Easter Water, blessed on Holy Saturday night, please bring a small bottle. Feel free to return empty bottles for next year. Pope Francis tells us: We will never discover the special, personal calling that God has in mind for us if we remain enclosed in ourselves, in our usual way of doing things… We could lose the chance to dream big and to play our part in the unique and original story that God wants to write with us. God calls young people from our local communities to serve as priests, religious and lay leaders in our church. We all have a role to play in helping young people to ‘dream big’ and hear this call. We hold them in prayer in this year of Youth. Pope Francis – Message for 2018 World Day of Vocations ‘It will not fill our hearts if we keep standing by the window with the excuse of waiting for the right time, without accepting this very day the risk of making a decision. Vocation is today! The Christian mission is now! Each one of us is called to become a witness of the Lord, here and now. ‘We should not wait to be perfect in order to respond with our generous “yes”, nor be fearful of our limitations and sins, but instead open our hearts to the voice of the Lord.’ ANZAC Day Service: St Mary’s College invites Old Boys who are returned and ex-servicemen to participate in the College ANZAC Day Commemoration Service on Tuesday, 24th April. To register your interest and to be included in the March of Veterans, please contact Mrs Lucia Armstrong at the College on 4631 7333 or email [email protected] Theatre Night: The Toowoomba Repertory Theatre is presenting a play, STEEL MAGNOLIAS - a hilarious story of love, loss and enduring loyalty.

  • Delegates Named for Celebration of Plenary
MEDIA RELEASE March 23, 2020 DELEGATES NAMED FOR CELEBRATION OF PLENARY COUNCIL Plenary Council president Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB has written to 266 other Catholics across the country, calling them as delegates for the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia. “At a time in our Church’s history we’ve not seen before, with the suspension of Masses in many parts of the country and around the world, the announcement of our Plenary Council delegates is a source of great joy for the People of God in Australia,” Archbishop Costelloe said. Canon law outlines those who must be called as delegates to a plenary council, including bishops, vicars general, episcopal vicars, heads of seminaries and theological institutions, and leaders of religious congregations. That amounted to 180 delegates. Canon law also allows for delegates who may be called as representatives – the total of which can’t exceed half of the total of those who must be called. The number of delegates from each local church – a diocese, eparchy, ordinariate or prelature – ranged from one to four depending on the local Catholic population. In all, 78 people have so far been confirmed, with additional representation to be named from national organisations representing education, social services, health and aged care, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic. “Bishops across the country worked locally with leaders in their diocese to design a process to consider names of people who were nominated or applied to be delegates for the Plenary Council assemblies,” Archbishop Costelloe said. “We were grateful for and impressed with the faith and the calibre of the people who were nominated.

  • AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE Bishops Commission for the Plenary Council
AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE Bishops Commission for the Plenary Council Archbishop Mark Coleridge (Chairman) Archbishop Philip Wilson Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFMConv Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay OLM Bishop Michael Kennedy 4 August 2017 Bishops Commission for the Plenary Council Announces Appointment of Plenary Council Facilitator and Facilitation Team The Bishops Commission for the Plenary Council today announced the appointment of Ms Lana Turvey-Collins as the Plenary Council Facilitator. She will work in partnership with members of the Formation Team of Catholic Mission, forming a Plenary Council Facilitation Team which will comprise Fr Noel Connolly SSC and Mr Peter Gates, Deputy National Director of Catholic Mission. Ms Turvey-Collins and the Facilitation Team are humbled by the opportunity. “We look forward to collaborating with leaders and their teams across the diverse ministries and works of the Catholic Church and all people in Catholic communities across Australia. Over the coming years, we hope to support local Churches to lead and facilitate authentic and open dialogue about how we are, and how we can be, a community of missionary disciples in Australia. Pope Francis’ writings, teaching and witness are inspiration for us, as he reminds us what Jesus in today’s society looks like.” Plenary Council 2020 and the process of consultation and dialogue is an unprecedented opportunity for the Church in Australia. It’s an opportunity to engage with all Catholics in Australia – those who lead, those who work in Catholic organisations, those who may feel they don’t have a voice, those who feel they are outside the Church and those who show up every Sunday for Mass – a process inclusive of all.

  • Our Diocesan Community - October 2017 Liturgy Formation 2017 in THIS ISSUE
CATHOLIC DIOCESE OUR DIOCESAN of BALLARAT COMMUNITY News around the Diocese No. 53 October 2017 TOWARDS 2020 The Catholic Church in Australia has commenced preparations for a Plenary Council to be held in 2020. A Plenary Council provides an occasion for the whole Church to discern what the Holy Spirit is saying to our Church at this time. For this to happen, wide consultation of the entire Australian Church will be necessary so that all voices have an opportunity to be heard. Processes that enable all to genuinely listen to each other will also be required. A new relationship of trust and confidence has to be created within the Church in Australia and the wider community. The last time a Plenary Council was held in Australia was eighty years ago in 1937. At that time those engaged in the Plenary Council were advised to “take care that provision is made for the pastoral needs of the people of God… and to decide what seems opportune for the increase of the faith, the organization of common pastoral actions and the regulation of morals and of common ecclesiastical discipline which is to be observed, promoted and protected.” A Plenary Council has legislative capacity that will be applicable to the Church in Australia. The idea of having another Plenary Council in Australia has been around for some years. The idea has been given fresh impetus by Pope Francis’ encouragement of a ‘synodal’ style of Church and also by the reflection on the lessons of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

  • Official Announcement and Links
Announcement Australian Catholic Church to hold first Plenary Council in 80 years The Australian Catholic Church, with the approval of Pope Francis, will hold a Plenary Council in 2020 to discuss its way forward in light of the challenges it faces in contemporary society. Article By Richard Marsden Pope Francis has given his approval for the Catholic Church in Australia to hold its first Plenary Council - the most significant national ecclesiastical gathering – in more than 80 years. The Council in 2020 will address the way forward for the Church in Australia in light of the challenges it faces in contemporary society. Discernment on the way ahead Delegates from the 34 “local churches” of Australia will gather across two sessions in 2020 and 2021 to enable deeper discernment, further learning, and dialogue. The process begins at Pentecost 2018 and will help form the agenda for the Council. In a statement by the Australian Bishops Conference, Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Brisbane, chair of the Bishops Commission for the Plenary Council, said the gathering “will be a unique opportunity for people to come together and listen to God in all the ways God speaks to us, and in particular by listening to one another as together we discern what God is asking of us at this time – a time when the Church in Australia is facing significant challenges.” He added: “We sincerely hope the preparation and celebration of the Plenary Council is a time when all parts of the Church listen to and dialogue with one another as we explore together how we might answer the question: ‘What do you think God is asking of us in Australia?’” “Seize the opportunity” In approving the Plenary Council, Pope Francis also endorsed the bishops’ nomination of Archbishop Timothy Costelloe of Perth as the president of the Plenary Council.

  • Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse: Case Study 50 21 February 2017 the Eleventh Day of the Roya
Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse: Case Study 50 21 February 2017 The eleventh day of the Royal Commission’s Catholic “wrap up” hearing was held today in Sydney. Today’s panel featured Bishops from “smaller” dioceses: Archbishop Christopher Prowse, Archbishop of Canberra-Goulburn, Archbishop Julian Porteous, Archbishop of Hobart, Bishop Daniel Hurley, Bishop of Darwin, Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen, Bishop of Parramatta, Bishop Christopher Saunders, Bishop of Broome, and Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay, Maronite Bishop of Australia. Disclosure of abuse from Bishop Long Although it occurred at the very end of today’s testimony, it is worth mentioning as the initial item in this summary. Bishop Long told the Commission that he is a survivor of clerical sexual abuse: I was also a victim of sexual abuse by clergy when I first came to Australia, even though I was an adult, so that had a powerful impact on me and how I want to, you know, walk in the shoes of other victims and really endeavour to attain justice and dignity for them. Reaction to the data revealed during the Commission A number of the Bishops commented that they were shocked at the size and scale of clerical sexual abuse in Australia after hearing the statistics reported by the Royal Commission. They said that while they had an idea of the history in their own diocese and had each met with victims and had been told of the personal effects, hearing it on a national scale was shocking. The Bishops were asked how this could be shocking to them, and that they could still be grappling with understanding the crisis, given that the Church has had a response mechanism in place for more than 20 years.
