Prayer of the Week:

The Nano Nagle Prayer Lord God, You raise up people from age to age to speak anew Your Word to us and to show us your ways. Such is Nano Nagle. In days when courage is needed, You give us this woman of strength to walk before us with conviction. In days of great change, You present us with a prophet whose faith is firm, as the light of her lantern brought hope into the lives made wretched by poverty and oppression. So may she inspire us to compassionate action for those in need around us. Amen.

Everyone is invited to celebrate Nano Nagle this Friday at the 9.15am School Liturgy.

Newsletter: If you wish to receive the Newsletter via email please let us know or write your details in the Pink Communications Book in the foyer.

Friendship Group: Last week Linda Porter from Ozcare spoke to the group about dementia. This was a very interesting and helpful talk. A lot of us went away with a new view of dementia and how it affects different people in different ways. There are some handouts in foyer if anyone would like to read more about dementia and brain health. At the next meeting on May 15th, Donna Honan, a Volunteer with the Qld Police Service Crime Prevention Unit will be attending. The highlight of Donna’s talk will be Senior Safety and Crime Prevention. This should also be very informative and interesting. Please mark your calendar and come along with a plate to share. All welcome.

Easter Water: If anyone would like to take home some Easter Water, blessed on Holy Saturday night, please bring a small bottle. Feel free to return empty bottles for next year.

Funeral Team Thank you to the members of the Funeral Ministry Team who attended the training days this week. We hope these days have been beneficial. Lola Canning, Co-ordinator.

*** News from outside our Parish *** 22nd April (Fourth Sunday of Easter) Today is the World Day of Vocations. tells us: We will never discover the special, personal calling that God has in mind for us if we remain enclosed in ourselves, in our usual way of doing things… We could lose the chance to dream big and to play our part in the unique and original story that God wants to write with us. God calls young people from our local communities to serve as priests, religious and lay leaders in our church. We all have a role to play in helping young people to ‘dream big’ and hear this call. We hold them in prayer in this year of Youth. Pope Francis – Message for 2018 World Day of Vocations ‘It will not fill our hearts if we keep standing by the window with the excuse of waiting for the right time, without accepting this very day the risk of making a decision. Vocation is today! The Christian mission is now! Each one of us is called to become a witness of the Lord, here and now. ‘We should not wait to be perfect in order to respond with our generous “yes”, nor be fearful of our limitations and sins, but instead open our hearts to the voice of the Lord.’

Gaudete et Exultate – Rejoice and Be Glad. A letter from Pope Francis. (CRA Website adapted.) Holiness is present in the patience of God’s people, in parents who raise their children with immense love, in people who work hard to support their families, in the sick, and in elderly religious who never lose their smile, says Pope Francis in his latest Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete et Exultate. In the document, ‘Rejoice and be Glad’, Pope Francis says the path to holiness consists in daily acts of charity, joy and a sense of humour and people should choose their own path to holiness according to their state in life. “To be holy does not require being a bishop, a priest or a religious,” he says. “We are frequently tempted to think that holiness is only for those who can withdraw from ordinary affairs to spend much time in prayer. That is not the case. We are all called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves. Francis calls on Catholics to follow Jesus’ beatitudes through serving the marginalised, the poor and migrants, while also defending the child in the womb. In the exhortation, Francis criticises those who describe the plight of migrants as a “secondary issue” compared to “grave bioethical issues”, saying they have adopted an attitude akin to a “politician looking for votes”. The attitude of a Christian, the Pope explains, is “to stand in the shoes of those brothers and sisters of ours who risk their lives to offer a future to their children.” Read the full text of the Pope's new Apostolic Exhortation, 'Rejoice and be Glad'.

Bishops Announce Appointment of Plenary Council Executive Committee

Source : ACBC Communications ( Australian Catholic Bishops Conference) ( Adapted) Pope Francis has given approval for the in Australia to hold a Plenary Council. This will be held in 2020 and will be the first to include women and lay people. The last plenary council, held in 1937, was an exclusively male gathering, with only bishops, theologians and superiors of male religious orders attending. The 2020 version has a different complexion with all-of-church participation from a richly diverse community, and the intent to discuss and legislate on a wide range of issues, including matters of faith, morals and discipline. Everyone in the church is invited to contribute and all are encouraged to speak what is in their minds and hearts about the way the Spirit is calling the Australian church into the future. A process of listening and dialogue will begin at Pentecost 2018 and this will help form the agenda of the Plenary Council. Lana Turvey-Collins from Queensland is the facilitator of the Church’s historic Plenary Council 2020. She is leading a three-year “transformative journey” with the cultural reform of the Church on the table. (See Catholic Leader for more details) The Bishops Commission for the Plenary Council announced the names of those who have accepted appointment to the Plenary Council Executive Committee. Their appointment followed an extensive confidential process of consultation across the Australian Church to ensure diversity. Together they bring a variety of gifts, competencies and experience to the work of the Executive Committee. The Committee will work closely with the Bishops Commission to ensure the successful preparation, celebration and implementation of the Plenary Council 2020. The Executive Committee membership with their home diocese is as follows: Mr Daniel Ang – Broken Bay. Mr Shayne Bennett – Brisbane. Br Ian Cribb SJ – Broken Bay Dr Gemma Cruz – Melbourne. Sr Moya Hanlen FDNSC – Sydney. Ms Sally Hood – Brisbane Mr John Lochowiak – Adelaide. Dr Brigid McKenna – Hobart. Ms Sarah Moffatt – Adelaide. Sr Grace Roclawska CSFN – Parramatta. Rev Dr Ormond Rush – Townsville Dr Debra Sayce – Perth. Mrs Theresa Simon – Sydney (Maronite Church) Dr Nigel Zimmerman – Parramatta. The Plenary Council is a response to the call of Saint Pope John Paul II that the Church of the third millennium discerns what the Spirit has been saying and to put into practice pastoral plans with the help of the people of God to prepare for the future. It also carries forward the call of Pope Francis for the Church to become truly synodal in its engagement with the whole Catholic community. Archbishop Coleridge said that the Plenary Council will play a crucial role in shaping the Church’s future in Australia. The Plenary Council will place the Church on a sound footing to respond to what is not merely an era of change but a change of era.’ Membership of the Bishops Commission for the Plenary Council includes: Archbishop , Archbishop Philip Wilson, Archbishop SDB, Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv and Bishop Michael Kennedy. You can sign up for an e-newsletter by visiting the plenary council website at www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au
