Biographical Sketch

Sturgis Robin Haskins was born in 1940 in Sorrento, Maine where his forebears migrated in 1762. He was the son of Reginald “Ty” Haskins (1903–1999) and Helen Noyes Haskins (1918–2003), and the brother of Stephanie Haskins Dall, Jeff Haskins, and Heidi Haskins Hooper. Mr. Haskins's identity and cultural formation was largely influenced by growing up in a small, tight-knit coastal community that was home to both the year-round working class (clam diggers, lobstermen, teachers, service workers) and, in the summer, to the wealthy elite dubbed the “summer people” who vacationed annually there.

Mr. Haskins's family was of modest means; his father worked in education and his mother excelled in raising the children and maintaining their home. Both parents were involved in their local church parish, civics, and the community at large. Sturgis Haskins balanced his life between his local roots and his fascination with, and friendship of, the summer people. A junior Maine sailing champion, Mr. Haskins transitioned easily into the company of summer people—many believed he was also “one of them.” Throughout his life, Mr. Haskins glided effortlessly between the two worlds of local grit and sophisticated fantasy. In an email to a friend in 2003, he wrote of this experience, “My little world here is very skewed. I am of local origin, but my interests often parallel those of our summer people. I do not fit into either of my worlds and seem ever doomed the role of the on-looker.” Mr. Haskins was charismatic, engaging, and interested in music, art, literature, culture, and politics. He also enjoyed drinking beer at local dive bars and getting to know the fishermen whose boats were moored just beyond the stretch of his family's property.

Mr. Haskins attended local public schools, graduating from Sumner Memorial High School in 1958. He began college at Washington State Teacher’s College and then transferred to University of Maine at Machias, where he spent one year. He left school and moved to New York City where he was able to come out—to himself and to his family—as a gay man. In a 1991 letter accompanying his gift of John Preston’s book Hometowns: Gay Men Write About Where They Belong to the librarian at his high school, he wrote, “Even before I entered Sumner, I knew I was gay. There was no one I could talk this over with; no role models, no books in the library, no school functionary, no one in my home, my community, or, importantly, my high school who might have provided comfort or support or some measure of sensitivity on a matter very, very important to me.” Mr. Haskins lived boldly as an out gay man as the Gay and Lesbian Movement gained momentum across the United States. In an email to a friend in 2003, he wrote of his coming out and finding community, “It was a very different world for gay people back then. I didn’t get along well with lesbians as a group. I found that men were much more fun to be with as they were far more lively and outspoken and, of course, flamboyant. They were also under much more pressure by the local gendararie [sic] than the women so their behavior mirrored their rage at the treatment they received from society.”

While in New York, he took classes at the New School for Social Research and Columbia. Mr. Haskins had the unique experience of being the only white student at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1967–68, where he became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. In the early 1970s Mr. Haskins returned to Maine, and attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he and a few others founded the Wilde-Stein Club in 1973. The Club was Maine’s first openly gay group on a college campus, and is still operating today. Additionally, he was involved with the first Maine Gay Symposium. In 1972, Mr. Haskins ran for State Senate for District 28 in Maine, but did not win the election.

Mr. Haskins lived in in the 1970s and 80s, often coming back to summer in Maine at his parent's home and to race sailboats. While in Boston, Mr. Haskins became involved in several gay organizations, and held positions of leadership for many of them. He founded the first gay outdoor recreation group in New England, the Chiltern Mountain Club, in 1978, after a failed attempt at organizing a hiking trip in 1977. The group exists today and commemorates its milestone anniversaries by leading the same inaugural hike up Mount Wachusett that Mr. Haskins organized for the club. Mr. Haskins later moved to Portland, and eventually back to Sorrento, Maine. Wherever he was living, he was attuned to the growing need for social engagement and political advocacy for the gay community. He had countless friends, and nurtured a few long-term romantic relationships. In 1984 he began a long correspondence with his friend Carl Seaburg of Boston, who was a Unitarian Universalist reverend and a gay man. Though restricted, these letters reveal much of Mr. Haskins’s life—from the minutiae of daily chores or outings, to significant life events, heartache, health, and family concerns. The letters are peppered with explicit tales of sexual adventure, and they discuss the emerging AIDS

Sturgis Haskins Papers Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ Collection Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity University of Southern Maine Libraries 4 epidemic and the cultural landscape of what it meant for men to have sex with men. Unfortunately these letters are restricted until 2087.

Mr. Haskins was an amateur photographer who seemed compelled to capture his environment (see Series 1.2 for dozens of notebooks filled with his snapshots). He liked to photograph local historical points of interest, as well as an “amiable” (one of Sturgis’s favorite words) male friend or acquaintance. He learned from and collaborated with his friend, well-known photographer and fellow Down East Maine resident, George Daniell. Throughout the years, Mr. Haskins created a large collection of photographs of Maine people, events, boats, and places. He was also a prolific writer, and penned several articles for publications, wrote poetry, and contributed social commentary in countless op-eds. He wrote the first (published) personal ad by a gay man in the Maine Times in 1984. A writer for the Bangor Daily News wrote of Mr. Haskins’s writing in 2005, “He gets into the details, and isn’t afraid to do so. Sturgis’ missives are brave in what he refuses to shy away from—the pornography of life, and the honesty needed to sustain it. These are so valuable and engrossing, they should be a book.”

Mr. Haskins was an astute collector and kept material from people within the gay community as well as of or by those who oppressed them. He would not accept discrimination or complacency, and these papers demonstrate his efforts as an advocate through his letters to business owners, government officials, and newspaper op-ed boards. He believed that Maine’s gay history should be better recorded, known, and made accessible, and he worked towards that goal in significant and covert ways; he would send books written by gay Mainers to his high school alma mater library with a note about wishing he had had some guiding literature when discovering his sexuality; he wrote eloquent essays for local publications; and his best gift was the donation of his personal papers to the University of Southern Maine Special Collections. In a letter to USM faculty scholar for the LGBT Collection Howard Solomon, Mr. Haskins said of his papers, “I see this little collection simply as a record of the life of a rather out gay man in eastern Maine. I do not put any other context to it.” His humility towards his collection is also revealed in his earliest correspondence with Madeline Winter at USM in 1999, as he writes, “I think it’s important that records of gay men’s lives be noted and mine is just of one who lived in the provinces. There is no particular significance to my life, only that I did keep records and photos when others didn’t.”

Sturgis Haskins was mindful that his personal papers should one day be donated to a respectable and appropriate repository; a few of his letters are evidence of such. He exhibited concern for the restrictive nature of some of his most private material, and made efforts to have parts of his collection sealed until his “demise” as he put it (restrictions on material protecting third party privacy have been placed until the year 2087).

In later adulthood, Sturgis lived full-time in Sorrento, Maine, and had an active social calendar. He occupied his time with croquet (for which he would travel to the southern United States to compete in matches), sailing (he was a senior Maine sailing

Sturgis Haskins Papers Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ Collection Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity University of Southern Maine Libraries 5 champion), organizing events for Downeast Senior College, rug-hooking arts, gardening, hiking, listening to music, photography, corresponding with the LGBT community on Maine Gaynet, visiting with friends and family, and drinking a lot of tea. He remained an active member of his local community—and an LGBT advocate—until his death on September 29, 2012 at the age of 72.

His obituary in the Bangor Daily News concluded that Mr. Haskins “was not only a ‘Downeast Renaissance man,’ but a well-liked good citizen, who got things done.” Sandy Phippen, a longtime friend of Mr. Haskins’s and notable writer, compiled a memoir about “Sturge” in which he wrote, “Under his senior picture in the 1958 Spindrift (the Sumner Memorial High School yearbook), it is written: ‘No road is long with good company.’ And Sturge was great company.” Researchers will find great company in the material generously donated to USM by Mr. Haskins and his family, for it is through his letters, collected ephemera, and photographs that one gets to be in the presence of an American pioneer—an out gay man navigating the waters of a changing society, upon which he made a considerable impression.

Scope and Content Note

The USM Special Collections includes a copy of Sturge: A Memoir (2013; LGBT CT 238 H375 2013) compiled by Mr. Haskins’s longtime friend, the writer Sanford Phippen.

The majority of this collection relates to Gay and Lesbian organizations, concerns, issues, politics, and social life in Maine, Boston, and throughout the United States. During his life, the “T” for “Transgender” in LGBTQ+ was not widely discussed or addressed in the material Mr. Haskins collected, however some historical notes on transgender and non-binary individuals are included here, and many organizations he was involved with have since become more inclusive of the trans community.

The bulk of this material relates to or takes place in: Maine (Downeast / Sorrento; Portland; Bangor), Boston, MA, and New York.

Mr. Haskins’s papers include important documentation of early gay groups and events (many of which he founded or held a leadership role in), including the Wilde-Stein Club at University of Maine Orono in 1973 (the first openly gay group on a Maine college campus) and the Maine Gay Symposium, the Chiltern Mountain Club (a gay recreational group founded by Mr. Haskins in 1977/78), Unitarian Universalist Association / Interweave (a gay faith-based group in Bangor, Maine), and political advocacy groups (of special note is the Maine Won’t Discriminate campaign in 1995).

A significant part of Mr. Haskins’s papers is the inclusion of several obscure gay-related publications from New England and throughout the U.S. (Series 3.1) as well as clippings relating to gay life and discrimination (Series 3.3)—with particular note to the murder of

Sturgis Haskins Papers Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ Collection Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity University of Southern Maine Libraries 6 gay teenager Charlie Howard in Bangor, Maine in 1984 and the social and political aftermath of that tragedy.

Mr. Haskins was a close friend of the notable photographer and artist George Daniell (1911–2002) and Series 1.4 includes material relating to their friendship, as well as to Mr. Daniell’s professional career. This section of Series 1.4 also includes 45 black and white photographic prints made by Mr. Daniell. There are a few other notable figures appearing in these papers including Norman Mailer, Mary Oliver, Barney Frank, Elaine Noble, Brook Astor, Julia Child, Sophia Loren, Tennessee Williams, Audrey Hepburn, and Sydney Rockefeller

In addition to gay-related material, Mr. Haskins’s papers represent a wide range of personal interests: sailing, hiking, croquet, music, rug-hooking, local and state history, and education. Items relating to his unsuccessful run for Maine State Senate in 1972 are included in Series 1.5.

Series 1.3.2 and Series 1.5 contain errant (another favorite word of Mr. Haskins’s) material that do not otherwise “fit” into series containing correspondence, organization and events, or publications. Issues of Maine Gay Task Force Newsletter/Mainely Gay and Our Paper were removed for consolidation into cataloged runs.

Mr. Haskins has provided a rich context to his life in his letters and emails (Series 1.1). In the 2000s, Mr. Haskins was an active member of Maine Gaynet, an online forum for the LGBT community. Through his email diaries and social commentary on Maine Gaynet and letters to and from his friend Rev. Carl Seaburg, researchers can access Mr. Haskins’s unique voice, story, and perspective on his place in a changing world.

Processing Note

Sturgis Haskins donated his papers to University of Southern Maine over a period of several years. Upon his death, additional material was donated by his sister. Mr. Haskins had carefully arranged much of his material into series of notebooks, folders, and boxes; the material that arrived in 2012 was not well organized. Some of his material has been re-organized to best serve the potential needs of researchers (see Description of Papers and series). Several three ring binders (“notebooks”) contain photographs affixed to paper, often with captions in his handwriting, as well as ephemera tucked into plastic sleeves. This part of the collection has remained intact to best preserve the physical and intellectual organization made by Mr. Haskins. Material in the notebooks often corresponds with material in other series (e.g., Series 1.1: Correspondence; Series 1.5: Personal Life: Interests, Politics, Spirituality, And Social Life; Series 2: Organizations & Related Events).

Researchers may also find Mr. Haskins’s donated personal collections and/or information about him at the following institutions: Maine Historical Society, Maine

Description of the Papers

Series 1 and its subseries 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 (1963–2011) contain material documenting Sturgis Haskins’s personal life, which did not fit into the other series. The Boston scrapbook has photographs primarily of the Boston area, dated 1975–1980, with some annotation. On pages 27–28 there are photographs of Project Lambda, an organization found in Series 2.1.1. In 1979, Haskins accused two police officers of assaulting him at the Jolar Cinemas, and folder 10 contains correspondence with Barney Frank, then a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Haskins’s description of the incident, and responses from the Boston Police. In addition, there is one political brochure featuring Haskins, and a newspaper article that was added to the collection which briefly mentions Haskins. 1.1: Correspondence (Letters, Emails) 1.2: Scrapbooks & Notebooks (See Appendix 1) 1.3: Other Personal Papers 1.4: George Daniell (See Appendix 2) 1.5: Personal Interests; Political, Family, Social, and Spiritual Life

Series 2 and its subseries 2.1.1, 2.1.2, and 2.2 (1971–2004) contain pamphlets, correspondence, memorabilia, and various information on organizations in which Haskins was interested. The organizations are predominately Gay and Lesbian groups almost entirely from the New England area, with concentrations on Boston and Maine. There are social and political organizations, some groups playing both roles. 2.1.1: Gay-related, Maine and New England 2.1.2: Gay-related, National or Non-Maine/New England 2.2: General (non-gay) Organizations

The bulk of Series 3 and its subseries 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 (1970–2012) date from the 1970s. Under clippings are single articles Haskins saved, covering topics relating to the Gay and Lesbian communities and homosexuality. In some cases, he saved the entire newspaper or magazine, and one issue of a periodical comprises most of this Series. There are, however, significant runs of Esplanade (published in Boston, MA), Fag Rag (published in Boston, MA), Gay Community News (published in Boston, MA), and Mainely Gay.

3.1: Gay Publications 3.2: General (Non-gay) Publications 3.3: Articles and Clippings

Series 4 contains restricted material, including the above-mentioned correspondence between Sturgis Haskins and Rev. Carl Seaburg, and emails or club ledgers that include the personal information of other people.

Series 5 contains oversized material, including a wooden sculpture, photographic prints from George Daniell, and Sturgis’s intact personal scrapbooks of 1970–2005. (See appendices 1 and 2.)

Appendix 1 contains brief descriptions of the contents of 25 intact personal binders/scrapbooks of Sturgis Haskins. (See Series 1.2 and 5.)

Appendix 2 contains descriptions of the George Daniell photographs found in Series 5: Oversize Material. See also Series 1.4: George Daniell.
