Las escuelas públicas son gratis a diferencia de las escuelas privadas que hay que pagar una matrícula. Las escuelas públicas están divididas en distritos. Algunos distritos incluyen solamente una ciudad o un pueblo, pero otros distritos pueden incluir más de una ciudad o pueblo. Manhattan-Ogden USD 338 incluye dos comunidades diferentes, Manhattan and Ogden. El distrito escolar tiene una junta educativa. Los miembros de la junta educativa viven en el distrito escolar y son electos por los residentes que se encuentran inscritos para votar. El distrito escolar toma decisiones referente a las escuelas. Por ejemplo, la junta directiva decide si el distrito necesita construir nuevas escuelas. La junta educativa también escoge al superintendente. El superintendente es el director del distrito escolar. Generalmente, el sistema educativo está compuesto de tres niveles, sin contar preescolar, que son: la escuela primaria (K-5th grade), la escuela media (6th grade – 8th grade) y la preparatoria (9th grade – 12th grade). Preescolar (edades 3-4): El preescolar no es obligatorio. No todas las escuelas tienen un preescolar. Algunos preescolares son gratis y otras cobran una matrícula. La enseñanza preescolar tiene el objetivo de que cada estudiante empiece kinder preparado para ser exitoso social, emocional y académicamente. Kinder – 5to Grado (Primaria): Las leyes de Kansas no requieren que los niños participen en kinder. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los niños de Kansas asisten al kinder cuando son elegibles (KSDE, 2016). Los estudiantes de las escuelas primarias generalmente permanecen un salón de clases y tiene un maestro o maestra durante todo el año escolar. Ellos también participan en Page | 2 otras clases con diferentes maestros, tales como: educación física, arte, STEM y música. Estas clases se llaman “especiales”. 6to Grado – 8vo Grado (Media): Algunas escuelas medias comienzan en 6to grado, otras en 7mo grado. Los estudiantes se alternan en diferentes salones durante el día. 9no Grado – 12mo Grado (Preparatoria): Los estudiantes de la escuela preparatoria alternan clases y tienen diferentes maestros durante el día. La preparatoria capacita a los estudiantes para la universidad y otras carreras. Programas de Verano: Muchas escuelas ofrecen programas de verano. Algunas clases son para estudiantes que necesitan apoyo adicional en la escuela y otros para actividades o temas especiales. Puede que tenga que pagar una matrícula para los programas de verano. Procedimientos para la inscripción Los centros de preescolar de Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 requieren que los niños tengan tres (3) años al 31 de agosto y que al mismo tiempo no sean elegibles para kinder (tener 5 años al 31 de agosto).
