Ragged, hungry little Maggie tries to sell matches on the icy streets of a cold city, but no one will buy MATCH GIRL them—not because people are malicious or spiteful, but because they are so involved in their own interests that they fail to understand the needs of others. In desperation Maggie lights her matches to warm herself. She doesn’t get warm, but somehow her pitiful little flame lights up the world A drama in one act by around her. It is especially meaningful at Christmas—or any season. Maggie may be almost any age of childhood—from a preschooler to a young high HERMAN AMMANN school girl. And her story appeals to children and adults alike. This play is ideal for directors who want to use a large number of people; the size of the cast is virtually unlimited. The students will practice using their listening skills as the Teacher tells the story. 4. Students will be encouraged to practice their English by memorizing “chunks of English” so that they will begin to have the language in their minds and therefore able to use it more efficiently and correctly in daily encounters. 5. The students will learn correct pronunciation. 6. The students will develop poise and confidence by reciting the story before the class. 7. The students will gain in fluency. 8. The students will increase their vocabulary. ESL Objectives: Pronunciation - result of producing the sounds of speech, including articulation, stress, and intonation, often with reference to the English standard of correctness or acceptability. Pronunciation drills on the following sounds are included: /th/ /l/ /v/ /w/ /short e/ Diction - usually implies a high level of usage; it refers chiefly to the choice of words and their arrangement. This is encouraged when the students make substitutions, vary their tales, or create their own skits. We want to encourage the students to use their English! Vocabulary - learning new words of a foreign language. This includes idiomatic expressions. Fluency - able to speak smoothly, easily, gracefully, and readily. All ESL methods seek to increase fluency. Intonation - the sound pattern of phrases and sentences produced by pitch variation in the voice which distinguishes kinds of sentences of different language cultures. P has said the city probably leans toward the early 19th century, he writes it a bit older than that and so this felt, as one person said, more like a Harry Potter than the Discworld. The guy from Hustle is great as Teatime and the girl from Downton Abbey perfect as Susan Death, and they both bring the two central characters to life in such a way that the book feels very flat in comparison but as a standalone Discworld novel on the nature of belief it's almost as good as Small Gods with the s I have seen the TV adaptation so many times, it's a Christmas tradition around here, that it is hard to separate my affection for the show with my affection for the writing of Pratchett. The midwinter holiday on Discworld is Hogswatch rather than Christmas, and the Hogfather is the Discworld's counterpart of Santa Claus.

    HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1805–1875); A CELEBRATION AND REAPPRAISAL A Conference 8 – 10 August 2005 at the British Library Conference Centre, 96 Euston Road London NW1 2005 marks the 200th birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, one of Europe’s finest and most original storytellers. But Andersen was much more than the author of the fairy tales that have made his reputation in Britain. As performer, artist, man of letters and celebrity, Andersen did much to shape Victorian art and literature. His legacy was a new form of writing that has influenced authors as various as Lewis Carroll, Oscar Wilde and Philip Pullman. Organised by the British Library in association with the University of Newcastle and the Institute of English Studies at the University of London, the conference will explore this enigmatic and contradictory character.     The Dreams of Hans Christian Andersen 1 Patricia Garfield, Ph.D. The Dreams of Hans Christian Andersen (Originally presented at IASD, June 21, 2004, Copenhagen, Denmark) Introduction Tak for sidst, which is to say, “thanks for last time.” Copenhagen has been the site of many happy visits with my late husband and some Danes have become dear friends. In particular, I want to give very special thanks to my Danish friend and translator, Bente Licht Mirow. She not only found Andersen’s journals on the Internet but translated his dreams recorded in them from old Danish into English. She even located an additional dream that hadn’t been included in the official list of his dreams. Beyond that generosity, our discussions about Andersen over the last months added immeasurably to my understanding of him. Tak, Bente. Olaf Hansen, too, kindly shared his knowledge of Danish culture and sent me a compact disc with the haunting tune from Viking times called “I Dreamt Me A Dream Last Night” (of silk and precious cloth…) Tak, Olaf.
