TOWNSEND PETERSON SummarySummarySummary Alpha taxonomy involves delineation of the basic unit of biology: the species. The concepts by which we define species, however, have been controversial, with several alternatives competing at present, some creating fewer and some more species units, depending on interpretation of species limits. Although it is tempting to assume that species concepts would have little inter- action with the geographic foci of species richness and endemism — and some have so argued — this assumption does not withstand careful analysis. In this paper, I develop a first-pass assessment of Philippine bird taxonomy under an alternative species concept, and compare the results with the traditional biological species concept lists. Differences between the two lists were dramatic, but not just in numbers of species; rather, new, previously unrecognized or previously underappreciated foci of endemism were noted. A thorough understanding of the taxonomic basis of species lists is therefore critical to conservation planning. Introduction Recent taxonomic studies have pointed out conservation implications of their results for several parts of the world (Boon et al. 2000; Lovette et al. 1999; Ortíz-Pulido et al. 2002): new viewpoints on species limits led to new priorities for conservation action, mainly via recognition of ‘new’ (although not necessarily undescribed) species-level taxa. -
A Classification of the Rallidae
A CLASSIFICATION OF THE RALLIDAE STARRY L. OLSON HE family Rallidae, containing over 150 living or recently extinct species T and having one of the widest distributions of any family of terrestrial vertebrates, has, in proportion to its size and interest, received less study than perhaps any other major group of birds. The only two attempts at a classifi- cation of all of the recent rallid genera are those of Sharpe (1894) and Peters (1934). Although each of these lists has some merit, neither is satisfactory in reflecting relationships between the genera and both often separate closely related groups. In the past, no attempt has been made to identify the more primitive members of the Rallidae or to illuminate evolutionary trends in the family. Lists almost invariably begin with the genus Rdus which is actually one of the most specialized genera of the family and does not represent an ancestral or primitive stock. One of the difficulties of rallid taxonomy arises from the relative homo- geneity of the family, rails for the most part being rather generalized birds with few groups having morphological modifications that clearly define them. As a consequence, particularly well-marked genera have been elevated to subfamily rank on the basis of characters that in more diverse families would not be considered as significant. Another weakness of former classifications of the family arose from what Mayr (194933) referred to as the “instability of the morphology of rails.” This “instability of morphology,” while seeming to belie what I have just said about homogeneity, refers only to the characteristics associated with flightlessness-a condition that appears with great regularity in island rails and which has evolved many times. -

Whilst the focus of the tour was certainly the rich assemblage of Upper Guinea specialties, we did not neglect the interesting diversity of mammals. Participants were treated to an astonishing 9 Upper Guinea endemics and an array of near-endemics and rare, elusive, localized and stunning species. These included the secretive and rarely seen White-breasted Guineafowl, Ahanta Francolin, Hartlaub’s Duck, Black Stork, mantling Black Heron, Dwarf Bittern, Bat Hawk, Beaudouin’s Snake Eagle, Congo Serpent Eagle, the scarce Long-tailed Hawk, splendid Fox Kestrel, African Finfoot, Nkulengu Rail, African Crake, Forbes’s Plover, a vagrant American Golden Plover, the mesmerising Egyptian Plover, vagrant Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Four-banded Sandgrouse, Black-collared Lovebird, Great Blue Turaco, Black-throated Coucal, accipiter like Thick- billed and splendid Yellow-throated Cuckoos, Olive and Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoos (amongst 16 cuckoo species!), Fraser’s and Akun Eagle-Owls, Rufous Fishing Owl, Red-chested Owlet, Black- shouldered, Plain and Standard-winged Nightjars, Black Spinetail, Bates’s Swift, Narina Trogon, Blue-bellied Roller, Chocolate-backed and White-bellied Kingfishers, Blue-moustached, -

Conservation Status of Bush-Hen in New South Wales
NSW SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Bush-hen Amaurornis olivaceus Review of Current Information in NSW August 2008 Current status: The NSW Scientific Committee recently determined that the Bush-hen Amaurornis olivaceus meets criteria for listing as Vulnerable in NSW under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (TSC Act), based on information contained in this report and other information available for the species. The Bush-hen is not currently listed under any other State or Commonwealth legislation. Species description: The Bush-hen is a medium-sized (28 cm) rail with olive-tinged brown upperparts, slate-grey underparts and a fawn vent; the bill is green with a small red forehead shield, and the legs are yellow. The similar Dusky Moorhen Gallinula tenebrosa has a redder frontal shield and bill, and white sides to the black undertail. The smaller Spotless Crake Porzana tabuensis has a dark bill, red legs and a barred undertail. Taxonomy: Formerly known and listed on the TSC Act as Amaurornis olivaceus (Meyen 1834) (Rallidae) this is a polytypic species (i.e. several subspecies) in a widespread genus. The Bush-hen was formerly regarded as extending to the Philippines, but the Philippine taxon is now separated as a full species (A. olivacea), and the Australasian species is now classified as the Pale-vented Bush- hen A. moluccana Wallace 1865 (Christidis & Boles 2008). The subspecies in Australia and southern New Guinea is A. o. ruficrissa Gould 1869. Other subspecies are nominate A. m. moluccana of the Moluccas and west New Guinea, A. m. nigrifrons of the Bismarck Archipelago and west Solomon Islands, and A. -

Tropical Birding Trip Report Sulawesi & Moluccas Extension: August-September 2015 A Tropical Birding set departure tour Sulawesi (Indonesia): & The Moluccas Extension (Halmahera) Birding the Edge of “Wallace’s Line” Minahassa Masked-Owl Tangkoko This tour was incredible for nightbirds; 9 owls, 5 nightjars, and 1 owlet-nightjar all seen. This bird was entirely unexpected; rarely seen at night; we were very fortunate to see in the daytime. These additions bring Palau’s total list of accepted species to 168. We report Palau’s second records of the Broad-billed Sandpiper (Calidris falcinellus), Chestnut-winged Cuckoo (Clamator coromandus), Channel- billed Cuckoo, White-throated Needletail (Hirundapus caudacutus) and Oriental Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus orientalis). -

Eduardo, DVM, MS, PhD Department of Veterinary Paraclinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine; and Museum of Natural History University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna 4031, Philippines ABSTRACT Five species of the avian family Rallidae namely Amaurornis phoenicurus javanicus (white-breasted waterhen), Gallicrex cinerea (watercock), Gallinula chloropus lozanoi (common moorhen), Gallirallus philippensis philippensis (buff-banded rail) and Gallirallus torquatus torquatus were examined live for lice at different periods. Lice were collected and fixed and stored in 70% ethyl alcohol until further study. Lice were processed for examination by cleaning in 5% potassium hydroxide solution, washing in distilled water, dehydrating in increasing grades of ethyl alcohol, clearing in terpineol and mounting in Canada balsam. Representative specimens of the lice were stained with Ziehl-Neelsen (carbol-fuchsin) in absolute ethyl alcohol before clearing in terpineol and mounting in Canada balsam. Three species of chewing lice of the genus Pseudomenopon Mjöberg, 1910 including one new to science were identified from the collection as follows: Pseudomenopon scopulacorne, P. pilosum and P. micosai new species. These are all illustrated based on the present specimens. Pseudomenopon pilosum occurred on all birds examined; -

OLSON No ACCOUNT OF THE RALLIDAE could properly be said to be complete without a consider- ation of the fossil and subfossil species of the family, particularly since these include some of its most bizarre and divergent members. In this chapter I have attempted to assemble and condense the primary literature concerning all the extinct forms of rails for which there are no known study skins, with the exception of the extinct rail of Tahiti, discussed elsewhere in this volume. The chapter falls into two main parts — the first treating of the more ancient forms of rails from continental deposits, usually known from a few bones or fragments only, and the second dealing with recently exterminated species from oceanic islands, most of which are represented by fairly complete skeletons.
