" p " BOSTON COLLEGE LIBRARY HILL, JAH2 8t9ff CHESTNUT MA PREFACE. In the montli of December, 1866, wlieu the French, on leavmg Rome, seemed to abandon the Pope to the mercy of his enemies, all eyes were riveted on the holy city, in the expectation of some revolu- tionary movement. This was the moment chosen by Pius IX to announce to the astonished world that, in the month of July then ensuing, he would solemnly proceed to the Beatification of a large number of Japanese martjTS. As this coincided with the time for celebrating the eighteenth centenary jubilee of the death of St. Peter, the Sovereign Pontiff invited all the bishops of Catholicity to gather around him on that occasion. Some regarded this as a chal- lenge ; it Avas, however, simply a holy confidence in the cause of the Church ; it was, perhaps, an in- spiration from on High.

  • The Emergence of Amish Genetic Studies: a Brief History of Collaboration and Reciprocity
The Emergence of Amish Genetic Studies: A Brief History of Collaboration and Reciprocity Steven M. Nolt Professor of History and Anabaptist Studies Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies Elizabethtown College [email protected] Abstract: Since the 1960s, Amish genetic studies has become a significant arena of collaboration between medical researchers and Old Order Anabaptists. This article describes the origins of and early actors in this field of research and pushes beyond the handful of cursory accounts that focus exclusively on Dr. Victor McKusick, central though he was, to include the critical contributions of other researchers, physicians, and Amish liaisons. The collective work of these individuals quickly pointed to four areas of ongoing inquiry: the cultural context of health and illness, documentation of known but very rare conditions, identification of previously undocumented conditions and diseases, and demography. A remarkable feature of this early research was its interdisciplinary nature and its collaborative engagement with Amish people. That collaboration resulted not only in numerous medical breakthroughs, but also in expanded settlement directories and updated family genealogies, which Amish communities embraced, replicated, and came to regard as valuable community resources. Submitted May 5, 2020; accepted June 5, 2020; published September 18, 2020 https://doi.org/10.18061/jpac.v1i1.7659 Keywords: genetic studies; Amish health; demography; McKusick, Victor A; Egeland, Janice A; Cross, Harold E. enetic studies involving Amish populations has become a remarkable area of collaboration G between medical researchers and Old Order Anabaptists. This partnership, an unlikely one from some perspectives, brings together scientists operating on principles of empirical investigation and rational inquiry with Amish church members committed to tradition and an acceptance of divine will.

  • Religious Affects and Female Subjects in the Altar- Pieces Of
TEMENOS NORDIC JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE RELIGION Temenos Vol. 56 No. 2 (2020), 201–26 DOI: 10.33356/temenos.82534 Religious Affects and Female Subjects in the Altar- pieces of the Finnish Artist Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin: A Case Study of the Jepua Altarpiece ‘Christ Appear- ing to Mary Magdalene’ (1906) RINGA TAKANEN University of Turku Abstract Before the mid-nineteenth century there were few subjects in the altarpiece tradition of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland in which the central figures accompanying Christ were female. Seldom used or new motifs involving female characters now emerged behind the altar. Most of the altarpieces with central women figures were painted in Finland at the turn of the twentieth century by the artist Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin (1837–1916). In the nineteenth century Frosterus-Såltin was the only artist in Fin- land who realized the motif of ‘Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene’ in her altarpieces. In her final representation of the theme, the altarpiece in the church of the Finnish Jepua commune, she chose an unusual approach to the motif. My interest in the subject lies in the motif’s affective nature – the ways in which altarpieces in general have been actively used to evoke feelings. Moreover, I consider the influence that Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin, a significant agent in Finnish sacral art, had on consolidating the posi- tion of women’s agency in the Finnish altarpiece tradition. I examine the motif in relation to the cultural and political atmosphere of the era, especially the changing gender roles and the understanding of women’s social agency as the women’s movement emerged.

JAIME EGUIGUREN THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN AND CHRIST AT THE COLUMN BY ALEJO FERNÁNDEZ 2 THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN AND CHRIST AT THE COLUMN FOREWORD year ago when I discovered Jesus on the Way to Calvary, one of Alejo Fernández’s masterpieces, I never thought that two other works of this Ger- A man genius who left his best works in the 16th -century Spain would pass through my hands this soon. The Prayer in the Garden and the Christ at the Column are two wonderful works that, in their small format, sum up the best of this Central European artist: a night full of mystery and a palatial interior where the elegant figure of Christ acquires the position and elegance of a classical sculpture. Alberto Velasco tells us about it in this magnifi cent studio that I now present to you. Alejo Fernández was one of the giants of the Spanish and European Renaissance. Despite its well known production, its figure has continued to grow and it is, as we see in these magnificent works, the perfect synthesis of a medieval Europe formed by the new art. Attribution and a stylistic and iconographic analysis, has also taken the opportunity to present a new vision of the artistic output of the master, putting forward new suggestions that constitute a major contribution to the history of Renais- sance Hispanic painting. • An Anglican Altar Guild Manual
AN ANGLICAN ALTAR GUILD MANUAL For Use In The Anglican Diocese of the South A lay project of the American Anglican Council and the Anglican Diocese of the South Introduction If you are reading this Altar Guild Manual, I would like to thank you for your willingness to serve our Lord by assisting the clergy in preparing for the worship of Almighty God. I cannot thank enough all of the faithful Altar Guild members who have helped me throughout the years!!! Their faithful service has not only eased my load as a priest, but blessed countless lives with their behind the scenes service of the Lord. May your service do the same. This Altar Guild Manual is meant to be a guide and a help for those seeking to properly prepare the Altar and Altar Table for various aspects of Anglican worship. It is not all- inclusive and care should be taken to follow the guidance of your own clergy in these areas. We are not liturgical legalists so please use what is appropriate in your setting and in your congregational tradition. This guide is meant to help things be done properly and good order (1 Corinthians 14:40) and in the beauty of holiness (Psalm 96:9). May you be blessed and know the Presence of the Lord as you serve at His Altar! Bishop Foley Beach July 2013 Prayer for Altar Guild Members Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, you have desired to be worshipped in spirit and truth, and in the beauty of holiness: I humbly ask you to fill me with your bountiful Spirit and bless the work of my hands and the thoughts of my heart; that I may serve you in holiness as I prepare your Altar for worship; that the congregation may know you through your Word and Sacraments; and may your Name be exalted in this place; through Jesus Christ, my Savior and Lord.

Acknowledgements I owe thanks to a great many people without whom I would never have produced this book, or the Ph.D. dissertation on which it is based. First and foremost I must thank Diane Zhang, for her unending support, sharp insights and discerning eye. She did just about everything to make this book possible save writing it for me, so thankyou. I owe special thanks to my Ph.D. supervisor, Virginia Hooker. From the beginning to the end of the dissertation and indeed into her retirement, she read and commented perceptively on each and every draft with unfailing enthusiasm and encouragement. Special thanks also to Robert Cribb, who joined my supervisory panel for the writing up of the dissertation. His advice, comments and criticism were invaluable, and his numerous suggestions of additional interpretations and implications greatly enriched the dissertation and this book based on it. My other supervisor, Amrih Widodo, was a source of interesting ideas in the early stages of research. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have so many people help me during my stays in Indonesia. Solahudin could not have done more – he made sure things went smoothly the first time I went to Palu, generously gave me the benefit of his unique insights over and over again, and his information and suggestions introduced me to many new aspects of my research.
