South Dakota Veterans had been advocating for a Veterans Cemetery in the eastern side of South Dakota for more than twenty years. In 2016, the South Dakota Veterans Council adopted the objective of establishing a Veterans Cemetery closer to the state’s largest population of Veterans, and approached the Sioux Falls City Council about the best loca- tion for a Veterans Cemetery. In turn, the City Council invited two members of the Veter- ans Council to join a committee to review the land that the city owned. After selecting a site, the committee recommended the site be donated to the State for a Veterans Ceme- tery. The Sioux Falls City Council approved the donation and the land was deeded over to the state in January 2019. Meanwhile the Veterans Council presented the plan to the Legislators at the legislative round tables before the Legislative session began in 2018. During the legislative session Senate Bill 91 was unanimously passed in every sub-committee, committee and on the House and Senate Floors. On March 23,2018, Senate Bill 91 creating a South Dakota State Vet- erans Cemetery near Sioux Falls, SD was signed and enacted. The application was submitted to the National Cemetery Administration and on October 21, 2018, the FY 2019 Priority List was published Department Commander Tieunessen is the second on right in this photo with South Dakota first on the list for establishing a new Veterans Cemetery. 4 October 2019 Page 5 Chapter of the Week: Beirut Memorial Chapter 642 Chapter 642, at 775 members, is the second largest Chapter in the country; Hundreds of young people receive Americanism classes each year, either in summer camps or during the year in elementary school classes, participated, resulting in the award of (5) $1000.00 scholarships each year to Purple Heart recipient dependents. November 2019 NATIONAL COMMANDER’S CALL Inside this issue: My fellow Patriots: As your National Commander, I am proud of each and every Patriot member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and I salute you for your loyal and valiant service to our great nation. Veterans Day is a special day, set aside Commanders Call 1 for all Americans to reflect on the many sacrifices and the great achievements of the brave men and women who have protected and defended our freedom since the Adjutants Call 2 days of the American Revolution. For those of us who bear the scars of war, this day has special meaning and sentiment. Patriots of the Month 3-6 Unlike Memorial Day, when we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, this day honors the many other veterans who gave their all, but were able to return to their Chapters of the Month 7 homes and their families. At home, they continue to serve and contribute to making their communities a better place to live. I urge all Americans to pause today to pay respect those veterans in your family, your community, and other friends by thanking Activities Across the 8-12 them for their service and sacrifice. If possible, take time to visit with our sick and Order disabled veterans and assure them that they will not be forgotten. For me, Veterans Washington Post Article 13- Day is a day of reflection --it's the day that I allow my thoughts to return to Iraq and 14 pay tribute to those brave men and women with whom I served.

  • General George Armstrong Custer Verses Major James Breathed/Iraq War by David P
General George Armstrong Custer verses Major James Breathed/Iraq War By David P. Bridges Breathed Bridges Best, LLC© The Civil War has been named differently by both the North and the South. For the North it was called the War of the Rebellion and for the South it has been named The War of Northern Aggression or The War Between the States or The War For Southern Independence. In the end the winner of a war has the privilege of naming the war. They also write the predominate history of the war. Over time historians sort out what the war was all about and then discern the war’s meaning. The Dictionary defines a rebellion or insurgency as: “The quality or circumstance of being rebellious.” Following this thought is the definition of an insurgent, one who: “Rises in revolt against civil authority or a government in power.”1 The Revolutionary War for American Independence was an insurgency. The second American insurgency was called Shays Rebellion of 1786. Mr. Shay was an American Revolutionary War soldier who was a Massachusetts farmer after the War’s conclusion. He was thrown into debtor’s prison and when he was released he instigated an insurgency. He inspired 2,200 Americans to storm the Springfield, Massachusetts, Arsenal in order to acquire the arms and ammunition needed to equip the insurgents. 900 Federal men fired cannon canister shot over and then into Shay’s men. This bloodshed stopped the insurgents and they fled in all directions – never to reform again. The Whiskey Rebellion of 1791 could also be considered an insurgency or the third American Rebellion in which Americans fought against Americans.

  • The Purple Heart
The Purple Heart It is one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces. Introduced as the “Badge of Military Merit” by General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart is also the nation’s oldest military award. In military terms, the award had “broken service,” as it was ignored for nearly 150 years until it was re-introduced on February 22, 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The medal’s plain inscription “FOR MILITARY MERIT” barely expresses its significance. --------------------------------- On August 7, 1782, from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York, General George Washington wrote: “The General ever desirous to cherish virtuous ambition in his soldiers, as well as to foster and encourage every species of Military merit, directs that whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear on his facings over the left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth, or silk, edged with narrow lace or binding. Not only instances of unusual gallantry, but also of extraordinary fidelity and essential Gen. George Washington’s instructions for service in any way shall meet with a due the Badge of Military Merit reward. Before this favour can be conferred on any man, the particular fact, or facts, on which it is to be grounded must be set forth to the Commander in chief accompanied with certificates from the Commanding officers of the regiment and brigade to which the Candidate for reward belonged, or other incontestable proofs, and upon granting it, the name and regiment of the person with the action so certified are to be enrolled in the book of merit which will be kept at the orderly office.

  • Purple Heart Hall of Fame
Introduction: Purple Heart Hall of Fame George Washington’s stay in Newburgh, New York is significant for several reasons. His stay at the Hasbrouck farm was the longest of all his headquarters. The general arrived in April of 1782 and stayed until August of 1783. The army altered some structures on the property, and some were constructed, in an effort to accommodate the many needs of a military headquarters. After the occupation, these alterations and structures were mostly removed. While at this headquarters Washington also faced down the “Newburgh Conspiracy.” His senior officers were contemplating a march on Philadelphia to overthrow the Congress, followed by the general’s installation as a king. In a meeting at the Temple of Virtue in nearby New Windsor he expressed his dismay with the plan. Trying to read a formal statement, Washington stumbled over reading the words. Drawing his spectacles from his pocket he famously stated "Gentlemen, you must pardon me. I have grown gray in your service and now find myself growing blind." He had made sacrifices like his men. Washington’s grace under fire had won the day yet again. A final significant event was Washington’s creation of a major military recognition. Washington was prevented by the Articles of Confederation from being able to promote his men on the basis of merit. Although he had successfully stopped the Newburgh Conspiracy in in its tracks, Washington sincerely recognized the many sacrifices that his men had made during the war. In order to recognize soldiers in this manner, Washington issued orders on August 7, 1782 establishing the Badge of Military Merit for “whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed… .” The first recipients of the award were Sergeants Elijah Churchill, William Brown, and Daniel Bissell.
