NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 4, 2019 AG-elect Kaul Announces DOJ Appointees MADISON, Wis. – Attorney General-elect Josh Kaul today announced five of his appointees. In addition to three new appointees, Kaul will retain two of the previous administration’s appointees. “I’m proud to announce these five highly qualified appointees,” Kaul said. “Together, we’re going to work to strengthen the Department of Justice and improve public safety in Wisconsin.” Eric J. Wilson - Deputy Attorney General Eric Wilson previously worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Chicago and an Assistant Attorney General at the Wisconsin Department of Justice. He will be re-joining the Wisconsin Department of Justice after working for more than 10 years at Godfrey & Kahn. Wilson graduated from Harvard Law School, cum laude, and received a master’s degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1994. Wilson, who received his B.S. in mechanical engineering, graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois in 1990. Ashley Viste - Chief of Staff Prior to her work as campaign manager on AG-elect Kaul’s successful campaign, Ashley Viste worked on campaigns for United States Senator Tammy Baldwin, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers, and State Senator Dave Hansen. She received her B.A. in political science and environmental studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also served as communications director for State Senator Chris Larson during his term as minority leader. During the Judicial Conference, we will focus on judicial excellence, which is promoted by the judges and administrative staff who comprise our court system. We have made significant strides this year in moving our courts forward to meeting the many challenges we face in serving the public. Jean Bousquet expressed the concept of judicial excellence to which we aspire when she said, "The Wisconsin Court System protects individuals’ rights, privileges and liberties, maintains the rule of law, and provides a forum for the resolution of disputes that is fair, accessible, independent and effective." Through my remarks, and throughout the Judicial Conference, we will talk about judicial excellence, achieving it and continuing to maintain it in our ever-changing world. However, before we begin that conversation, this morning we continue a long tradition of recognizing those judges who have passed since the last Judicial Conference. On December 29, 2017, the Wisconsin Supreme Court, finding for Sands on the ethical issue, nevertheless ruled that Sands’ complaint failed to state a claim for unjust enrichment, an issue never raised, briefed, or previously argued.

This is easily called into question when judges hear a case from parties that contributed large amounts of money into their judicial campaigns. The Wisconsin Supreme Court was once considered a model of an impartial and non-partisan state court system. However, state politics and U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence have led to developments that have damaged the court’s reputation, politicized the court, and undermined the legitimacy of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

It is the final authority on matters pertaining to the Wisconsin Constitution and the highest tribunal for all actions begun in the state court system, except those involving federal constitutional issues appealable to the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition, it has regulatory and administrative authority over all courts and the practice of law in the state. In this capacity, it establishes procedural rules and codes of conduct for the courts and for the practice of law, and it regulates and disciplines attorneys, judges, and justices. The supreme court consists of seven justices elected for ten-year terms. They are chosen in statewide elections on the nonpartisan April ballot and take office on the following August 1. The Wisconsin Constitution provides that only one justice can be elected in any single year. In the event of a vacancy, the governor may appoint a person to serve until an election can be held to fill the seat.
