Eastern Region Update – August 2016 Hi Eastern Region Clubbies,

First of all I would like to thank all the Eastern Region members that attended either one of the Zespri Gisborne/ Tairāwhiti and Bay of Plenty/Coromandel Awards of Excellence. With Zespri coming on board as our major supporter of these Awards Evenings we had our strongest representation to date with 300 Clubbies from 15 of the 19 Eastern Region Clubs represented. Both events were definitely a big step up from last year (thanks to Chaz, Sue and Renee), clubs should be using these nights not only to recognise their volunteer members’ efforts but also as an opportunity to network and reward key people in their clubs. Zespri has also offered to add some support from their internal events team for next year so look out for another step in the right direction.

Officially we have now rolled into the new season and so has club memberships and member details. This means the new PAM database, usability and member rollover is the topic of the month, just a reminder that we have really good in house capability in the Eastern Region to be able to assist the clubs. Please contact Renee in the Gisborne area and Chaz in the BOP/Coromandel area if you need further help or have someone new to this role.

Lastly for this update a big focus in our 2016/2017 Regional Management Plan will be Health & Safety, particularly how we integrate systems and processes into the club space. I know many clubs have already progressed down this track, however, the more we share best practice ideas the better off we will be as a region. Leigh Sefton(ER Lifesaving Manager) is driving this project so if you have any questions please contact him.

Yours in Surf….

Chris Emmett

Awards of Excellence

A Huge Congratulations to all the finalists and winners of The Zespri Gisborne / Tairāwhiti & Bay of Plenty / Coromandel Awards of Excellence. Both events by all accounts were a big success with some of the largest turn out from clubs that we have seen in a while. Might have to look at another venue? Our Regional Primary Partnership with Zespri has certainly got off to a great start and we are very grateful to have them on board supporting clubs and their local communities. So thankyou Zespri! And also thanks to all our special guests and performances at both events.

Education Update

Planning for Beach Education for this summer is well under way. There are already have over 2500 students booked in for the eastern region, many of these have rebooked from 2015. I am contacting all of the schools in our region and especially targeting schools that haven’t been to beach education recently.

We are just finalising the contracts with clubs. If you haven’t got yours back to us, yet please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I will be in touch over the next month with all clubs running beach education this summer.

The instructor positions will be advertised later in August. We are hoping to get a lot of our instructors from last summer back but I know some have now got full time jobs or won’t be available. It would be great to get some new life guards on board this year to help with beach education. We especially need more instructors in the Whakatane, Waihi and Gisborne areas.

We will be running a separate instructor training day in Gisborne in mid-November this year. I know in the past it has been difficult to get instructors to come up to Mount Maunganui for the training day. So my hope is that having a local training day in Gisborne this summer will help with recruiting more life guards in the area to teach beach education.

Please talk to any of your clubbies who may not have taught beach education before and encourage them to apply in August. The hours are 9am-3pm so this would suit a wide range of people who are able to work within these hours, as long as they are refreshed life guards. If they have any questions they are welcome to get in touch with me. Many thanks for your help with this.
