On view at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and curated by Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace Gallery and Gary Pressman of Copro Gallery, the exhibition features close to one hundred artists who have graced the publication’s pages and website, and showcases the diversity and breadth of the New Contemporary movement Juxtapoz has championed and helped to uphold. In 1994 in San Francisco, Robert Williams, Craig Stecyk, Greg Escalante, Eric Swenson and Fausto Vitello founded Juxtapoz with the intent of fostering the art and culture of the underground. Providing an alternative voice and narrative as a counterpart to the dominant New York-centric discourse of contemporary art, it featured artists who straddled “high” and “low” culture. Aligning itself with the aesthetics of contemporary street culture, figurative art, California car culture, gig posters, tattoos, graphics, psychedelia and comics, the publication became a conduit and forum for an entirely new generation of artists who were latching on to the visual vernacular of powerfully populist themes. -

The project is web-based but it also mounted a four city tour in 2007. As scholarly research is very limited in the genre, this study was an attempt to gather the few existing sources, general information, and first hand knowledge of the author, a participant in the Exchange. The result is a look at the best practices in marketing urban art. The financial details of the Exchange were unable to be included. The author recommends that urban artists partner with organizations that share a similar mission and to focus on viral marketing. i Problem Statement Urban art is a new genre of art that is still in its developing stages. Though the market for urban art is growing rapidly, how to market urban art work has largely gone unstudied and undocumented. This study will document the Exchange, a collaborative visual art project involving 13 international “urban artists”. In this process, special attention will be focused on the marketing tools and strategies employed by the Exchange as well as their effectiveness. -

The resulting creation, Twinkling Stars Above, is a single-player platform PC game prototype. This paper describes the shared and distinct context of two contemporary art movements important to the creation of Twinkling Stars Above: Japan‘s Superflat and North America‘s Lowbrow. I propose that, given Superflat‘s influence on Japan‘s video game graphics, Lowbrow style could also be applied to video games. -

The show contained nearly 50 Dalí pieces from ColleCtions all over the U.S. and Europe, from the 1936 canvas "Soft ConstruCtion with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War)," full of contorted body parts, to "The ApoCalypse," a little-seen artist's edition of the Bible's Book of Revelation. For a budding, 21-year-old artist by the name of Robert Williams, the show was a mind-blower. "It was the first time I saw Dalí's paintings in person," he reCalls. "And it really humbled me. I realized I had a long way to go." Well, Williams, now 72, has definitely Come a long way. The long-time Los Angeles painter has had a lasting and storied career. In the '60s, he worked as an art director for legendary custom car builder Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. In the '70s, he hung with the Zap Comix crowd up in the Bay Area, producing alternative cartoons with the likes of Robert Crumb and Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez. The following decade, his painting, "Appetite for DestruCtion," which showed a robot figure wreaking violenCe, served as the notorious cover of a Guns N' Roses album of the same name. -

SLANG Aesthetics! is on view at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery from February 22nd to April 19th, 2015. The exhibition is Robert Williams’ first major body of work to make its debut in Los Angeles in well over a decade, and will feature 25 new oil paintings by the artist alongside a suite of drawings, and a series of large-scale sculptures fabricated with the assistance of Gentle Giant Studios. Robert Williams is widely upheld as the godfather of the low brow and pop surrealist art movements, and with as much frequency denigrated as an irreverent iconoclast among the arbiters of “high” art. As both patriarch and outlaw, Williams’ enduring influence on the New Contemporary movement is undeniable. A true maverick who sought to create vital work that channeled the shifting energies and immediacy of counterculture, from the 60’s onward, Williams’ paintings invoked a return to craftsmanship, figuration and demotic imagery that rejected the elitist tenets of conceptual minimalism. A kid of the 50’s, Williams grew up immersed in California’s hot rod Kustom Kulture, Rock n’ Roll and EC Comics, and was steeped in the populist currents of his era. -

The Highs and Lows of Modernism: A Cultural Deconstruction Emma West Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Critical and Cultural Theory) School of English, Communication and Philosophy Cardiff University January 2017 Summary Over the past two decades, scholars have shown that the modernist ‘Great Divide’ between high and low culture is culturally-constructed, reductive and oversimplified. Yet, despite these critical disavowals, the field of modernist studies is still informed by the Divide’s binary systems of evaluation and classification. ‘High’ and ‘low’ texts are studied in isolation and modernism is privileged over popular culture. This thesis argues that we must address the Great Divide’s structure if we are to move beyond it. The Divide is underpinned by three structural myths: that of essence (texts are inherently high or low), mutual exclusivity (texts are either high or low) and precedence (high texts come before low ones). Over the course of four chapters, this study seeks to define, challenge and reconfigure the Great Divide, exploring new approaches which allow us to study texts from across the cultural spectrum together. After an initial chapter which maps out the Great Divide in early-twentieth-century Britain, the following three chapters interrogate the structural myths in turn. Chapter 2 disputes the myth of essence, arguing that both ‘little’ and ‘popular’ magazines are shaped by external factors; Chapter 3 considers travel posters, showing that they exhibit apparently mutually-exclusive aesthetic and publicity functions at once; and Chapter 4 examines the extent to which innovations in mass-market fashion predated their modernist counterparts. -

Mediating Authenticity: Performing the Artist in Digital media Karin Hansson, PhD student at the Department of Computer & Systems Science, Stockholm University & The Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, [email protected], +46-(0)70-737813 DSV, Stockholm University, Forum 100, SE-164 40 Kista, Sweden Abstract This study examines the interplay between identity positions, dominant ideologies, and discursive practices on the Internet. The aim is to study how a culture like the art world is adapting to digital technology. The starting question is: How are artists’ identities created today? To answer this question, I did an ethnographic study of art students at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (KKH), focusing on their use of the Internet as a means of communication. During a five-month stay as a PhD student at the school I studied how 50 students artist's identity was performed on the Web, and 10 students were interviewed about their views on communication in general. The study shows a picture where two competing concepts of the artist create uncertainty about how an artist should be: like the romantic concept of the genial artist or like the institutional concept of the artist who is collectively created by the art world’s institutions. This applies to someone who appears as an outsider but in practice is a networker. The ideology expressed isn’t something new, however the discursive practices have changed. -

CNNs have massively improved performance in object detec- tion in photographs. However research into object detection in artwork remains limited. We show state-of-the-art performance on a challenging dataset, People-Art, which contains people from photos, cartoons and 41 different artwork movements. We achieve this high performance by fine-tuning a CNN for this task, thus also demonstrating that training CNNs on photos results in overfitting for photos: only the first three or four layers transfer from photos to artwork. Although the CNN's perfor- mance is the highest yet, it remains less than 60% AP, suggesting further work is needed for the cross-depiction problem. Keywords: CNNs, cross-depiction problem, object recognition 1 Introduction Object detection has improved significantly in recent years, especially as a result of the resurgence of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and the increase in performance and memory of GPUs. We refer to this as the cross-depiction problem: detecting objects regardless of how they are depicted (photographed, painted, drawn, etc.).
