Organised a training course on Landslide Analysis & Control’ from Dec, 8 to 12, 2003 sponsored by DST, Govt. of India, New Delhi 22. Particulars of Doctoral work: The Doctoral work entitled "Geotechnical study and environmental appraisal of a water-resource development project in Kumaun Himalaya, U.P." embodies field geotechnical investigations of Jamrani dam located in Kumaun Himalaya. Particularly the work encompasses an evaluation of the dam foundation, abutment stability analyses, reservoir competency studies and sedimentation problems of the catchment in addition to the environmental implications of the project. The foundation evaluation study includes 3-D logging of drifts, logging of drill holes and interpretation of water pressure tests. The slope stability analyses of the abutments involve calculation of factor of safety for the unstable wedges so as to adopt suitable foundation treatments. The limitations on the values obtained through laboratory and in- situ tests have been analysed. Sediment yield analyses, stability and water tightness studies form part of reservoir competency investigations. A logical attempt to prognosticate the extent of reservoir induced seismicity due to water impoundment is made based on geo-seismological environment of the area. Environmental impacts including the socio-economic impacts due to the dam construction have proved beyond doubt that the dam construction is more of necessity for the economic development of the water- starved Nainital-Bhabar region. 23. CONTRIBUTIONS THROUGH RESEARCH, TEACHING AND CONSULTANCY My major field of specialisation - `Engineering Geology' is a fast emerging, field-oriented subject. In India, though more than 3000 crores of rupees are invested annually in river valley and other projects, the research outputs related to Engineering Geology of these projects are meagre. Since Engineering Geology is
