  • An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.

  • Voices of Recovery Recovery Incorporates Both Quality of Life and Purpose in Life
2019 ANNUAL REPORT Voices of Recovery Recovery incorporates both quality of life and purpose in life. It means believing in oneself and having others believe in you. 1 | COMMUNITY ALLIANCE | VOICES OF RECOVERY Voices of Recovery Dear Friends and Colleagues: This past year, Community Alliance was privileged to serve over 3,000 men and women throughout the greater Omaha area and counties beyond. Some came to us after years of living in homelessness; others had just been diagnosed. Some had dropped out of school or the workplace; others wanted help hanging onto their jobs or educational goals even while battling their psychiatric symptoms. Many who crossed Community Alliance’s threshold were looking for a way to stop a seemingly endless cycle of crisis and hospitalization. Still others were facing significant physical health issues along with their mental health challenges. All, without exception, were in search of recovery. So what does recovery from mental illness really mean? When listening to the voices of those directly facing a major mental illness, one quickly comes to understand recovery is much more than an abatement of symptoms. Recovery incorporates both quality of life and purpose in life. It means believing in oneself and having others believe in you. It includes a sense of belonging and participation within one’s community through family, work, recreation, worship and more. It means shedding the stigma of illness and being given the opportunity to pursue one’s ambitions and goals. Through this annual report, we invite you to hear these Voices of Recovery and see the breadth and scope of our work at Community Alliance.

  • 30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Aaron: You know my work. Walk with me. I’m Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network.

  • Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue Formatted
Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue with Molly Haskell, 1997 Bruce Jenkins: Let me say that these dialogues have for the better part of this decade focused on that part of cinema devoted to narrative or dramatic filmmaking, and we've had evenings with actors, directors, cinematographers, and I would say really especially with those performers that we identify with the cutting edge of narrative filmmaking. In describing tonight's guest, Molly Haskell spoke of a creative artist who not only did a sizeable number of important projects but more importantly, did the projects that she herself wanted to see made. The same I think can be said about Molly Haskell. She began in the 1960s working in New York for the French Film Office at that point where the French New Wave needed a promoter and a writer and a translator. She eventually wrote the landmark book From Reverence to Rape on women in cinema from 1973 and republished in 1987, and did sizable stints as the film reviewer for Vogue magazine, The Village Voice, New York magazine, New York Observer, and more recently, for On the Issues. Her most recent book, Holding My Own in No Man's Land, contains her last two decades' worth of writing. I'm please to say it's in the Walker bookstore, as well. Our other guest tonight needs no introduction here in the Twin Cities nor in Cloquet, Minnesota, nor would I say anyplace in the world that motion pictures are watched and cherished. She's an internationally recognized star, but she's really a unique star.

  • €˜Better Call Saul,€™ €˜Lodge 49€™ Get Premiere Dates, Photos
‘Better Call Saul,’ ‘Lodge 49’ Get Premiere Dates, Photos 06.01.2018 AMC revealed first-look photos for season four of Better Call Saul, as well as first-look photos for new series Lodge 49, which will debut immediately after the return of the Breaking Bad prequel. Better Call Saul will premiere August 6 at 9 p.m., followed by Lodge 49 at 10 p.m. "Monday nights have become a destination for our character-driven dramas, and we loved the idea of pairing these two series, which are similar in their darkly comedic tone and led by two charming yet complicated characters facing huge life moments," said David Madden, president of original programming for AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. Better Call Saul follows the transformation of corporate attorney Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) into sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, which is catalyzed by the death of his brother Chuck (Michael McKean) in season three. In the wake of his loss, Jimmy takes steps into the criminal world that will put his future as a lawyer - and his relationship with Kim (Rhea Seehorn) - in jeopardy. Chuck's death also deeply affects former colleagues Howard (Patrick Fabian) and Kim as well, putting the two of them once again on opposite sides of a battle sparked by the McGill brothers. Meanwhile, Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) takes a more active role as Madrigal Ehrmantraut's (Jonathan Banks) newest (and most thorough) security consultant. It's a volatile time to be in the employ Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), as Hector's (Mark Margolis) collapse sends shock waves throughout the Albuquerque underworld and throws the cartel into chaos - tearing apart both Gus and Nacho's (Michael Mando) well-laid plans.
