INFORMATION TO USERS This dissertation was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • John Ford's Stagecoach
LELAND POAGUE 3 That Past, This Present Historicizing John Ford, 1939 Though its credit sequence features a montage of leisurely move- ments – shots of a stagecoach and its escort moving one way; of U.S. cavalry, then Apache warriors, the other; of the stagecoach again, sans escort, as if returning – Stagecoach proper begins with riders gal- loping hell-bent-for-leather almost directly toward the camera, in a long shot.1 This shot then dissolves to an army outpost on the edge of nowhere, hitching rails to frame left, tents and camp furniture and a flag staff to frame right. A bugle blows. The stars and stripes ascend the pole in the background while the riders pass back-to- front through the frame. A more visually and dramatically central flag raising occurs at the end of Drums Along the Mohawk, another 1939 John Ford film involving frontier outposts, besieged settlers, sinister aristocrats, newborn infants, and courage tested by combat or contest. And it concludes, almost as Stagecoach begins, with a dis- play of the national banner. Few of the Revolutionary-era characters who watch its ascent in Drums have ever seen the flag before; the symbolism of its stars and stripes must literally be explained. And individual “watchers” are picked out by Ford’s camera and cutting to witness its ascent, as if they were watching on our behalf. Claudette Colbert’s Lana Martin thinks the flag is “pretty”; a black woman, Daisy, Mrs. McKlennar’s “servant,” looks up tearfully; Blue Back, a Christian Indian, offers salute; and Henry Fonda’s Gil Martin gets a good eyeful and says it’s “time to get back to work” because there’s a “heap to do from now on.” 82 HISTORICIZING JOHN FORD, 1939 83 It is the work of this essay to investigate the historicity of John Ford’s films and filmmaking in 1939, commonly regarded as Hollywood’s and Ford’s most “spectacularly prolific” year.2 I invoke a portion of that history as prologue in order to acknowledge the necessary partiality of the enterprise.

  • Old Judge Priest
Old Judge Priest By Irvin S. Cobb OLD JUDGE PRIEST I. THE LORD PROVIDES THIS story begins with Judge Priest sitting at his desk at his chambers at the old courthouse. I have a suspicion that it will end with him sitting there. As to that small detail I cannot at this time be quite positive. Man proposes, but facts will have their way. If so be you have read divers earlier tales of my telling you already know the setting for the opening scene here. You are to picture first the big bare room, high-ceiled and square of shape, its plastering cracked and stained, its wall cases burdened with law books in splotched leather jerkins; and some of the books stand straight and upright, showing themselves to be confident of the rectitude of all statements made therein, and some slant over sideways against their fellows to the right or the left, as though craving confirmatory support for their contents. Observe also the water bucket on the little shelf in the corner, with the gourd dipper hanging handily by; the art calendar, presented with the compliments of the Langstock Lumber Company, tacked against the door; the spittoon on the floor; the steel engraving of President Davis and his Cabinet facing you as you enter; the two wide windows opening upon the west side of the square; the woodwork, which is of white poplar, but grained by old Mr. Kane, our leading house, sign and portrait painter, into what he reckoned to be a plausible imitation of the fibrillar eccentricities of black walnut; and in the middle of all this, hunched down behind his desk like a rifleman in a pit, is Judge Priest, in a confusing muddle of broad, stooped shoulders, wrinkled garments and fat short legs.

  • Playing the Big Easy: a History of New Orleans in Film and Television
PLAYING THE BIG EASY: A HISTORY OF NEW ORLEANS IN FILM AND TELEVISION Robert Gordon Joseph A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Cynthia Baron, Advisor Marlise Lonn Graduate Faculty Representative Clayton Rosati Andrew Schocket © 2018 Robert Joseph All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Cynthia Baron, Advisor Existing cultural studies scholarship on New Orleans explores the city’s exceptional popular identity, often focusing on the origins of that exceptionality in literature and the city’s twentieth century tourism campaigns. This perceived exceptionality, though originating from literary sources, was perpetuated and popularized in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries by film and television representations. As Hollywood’s production standards evolved throughout the twentieth century, New Orleans’ representation evolved with it. In each filmmaking era, representations of New Orleans reflected not only the production realities of that era, but also the political and cultural debates surrounding the city. In the past two decades, as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the passage of film tax credits by the Louisiana Legislature increased New Orleans’ profile, these debates have been more present and driven by New Orleans’ filmed representations. Using the theoretical framework of Guy Debord’s spectacle and the methodology of New Film History and close “to the background” textual analysis, this study undertakes an historical overview of New Orleans’ representation in film and television. This history starts in the era of Classical Hollywood (1928-1947) and continues through Transitional Hollywood (1948-1966), New Hollywood (1967-1975), and the current Age of the Blockbuster (1975-).

4 Bringing Bogie ut of the Courtroom Closet: Law and Lawyers in Film Prof Rennard Strickland Casablanca (19421is a film of mystery and romance. Warner Brothers cultivated that aura of intrigue not only about the place Casablanca but also about the man Rick. His mysterious past is among the reasons Casablanca is ranked by general audi- ences as the most popular American film of all time. Questioning Rick's past seems almost subversive, somehow disloyal, unfair to the memory of Humphrey Bogart. And yet, there is no doubt about it: the mysterious Rick Blaine was a law- yer-a criminal attorney at that! Rick, surely the most famous cine- matic bar owner in history, was also admitted at the bar of justice. Before coming to Casablanca for the waters, Rick had been a practicing attorney first in New York City and then in Paris. The old Hollywood studio system was good at doing what it set out to do; in Casablanca it sought to obscure the past of the man Bogart immortalized on the screen. And Prof. Rennard Strickland the film did just that! It is absolutely impossible from the film itself to estab- lish Rick's legal credentials. Closeting Rick was a deliberate decision by the film's producers. senting themselves. • STEAMBOAT TRANSPORTATION on the RED Riveri
STEAMBOAT TRANSPORTATION ON THE RED RIVERi "STEAMBOAT 'round the bend!" was a cry heard not only on the Mississippi in the heyday of the river steamers. At one time it echoed up and down the muddy stretches of the Red River from Moorhead to Lake Winnipeg. Before 1859 men of Minnesota or of the Red River settlement shook their heads dubiously at the mere idea of navigating the tortuous Red River,^ but in the decade of the 1870's there were no less than seventeen steamers and hundreds of flat- boats floating on its muddy waters. The steamboat era on the Red, though scarcely two dec ades in length, wrote an important and colorful chapter into the history of both Minnesota and the Red River settlement which became Manitoba in 1870.* To Minnesotans it car ried a vast trade which might otherwise have followed the Selkirk settlers' route via Hudson Bay or gone over the Daw son Road from the Lake of the Woods in the footsteps of Colonel Garnet J. Wolseley's troops. To the Red River settlers it was a bridge to the mainland, marking the end of a virtual isolation. The steamboat was the answer to the pioneer's prayer for rapid, regular, and relatively cheap communication with the outer world. For six months of the year in the 1870's, the whistle of an approaching steamboat would bring crowds hurrying down to the dock at the foot of Post Office Street in Winni- 'The material for this article is drawn chiefly from files of Manitoba newspapers in the Manitoba Legislative Library, Winnipeg.
