Falconcity of Wonders Falconcity of Wonders Falconcity of Wonders is a multipurpose mega project being developed within New Dubai, featuring structures based on famous sites and architectural marvels of the world, such as the Pyramids, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The city is shaped to represent the falcon, emblematic of the UAE’s heritage. The project is spread over an area more than 3.8 million square meters (41 million square feet) and will combine various commercial, residential, educational and leisure amenities with entertainment facilities, and will include apartments, villas, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, health clubs and spas, and schools and parks. Falconcity of Wonders is built as the most ambitious destination created to appeal to the widest audience, covering all age groups and nationalities. To further explore this phenomenon, this thesis focuses on three aspects that affect the dynamic relationship between the primary city and the cities within cities (sub-cities) in the Gulf region with special emphasis on Dubai. First, the naming problem of the sub-city illustrates why the tension between competing identities produces a set of effects that could either enforce or confuse the overall urban identity. Secondly, this thesis demonstrates how Dubai utilizes two seemingly opposed growth strategies (sprawl and infill) in order to grow as a primary city and to integrate its sub-cities. The last aspect explores how Dubai’s internal governance structure enables the freedom and autonomy of sub-cities. This role requires an organizational Project management Framework that covers, projects, programs and portfolios. It also introduces qualified competencies in projects management such as program and project managers and PMO managers. ‏Thus, RTA’s initiative came in 2013 by organizing the Dubai International Project Management Forum (DIPMF) under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince, Chairman of the Executive Council, launching its first edition in 2014. The purpose of DIPMF organized in collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority H.E. Mattar Al Tayer Director General and Chairman of (DEWA), Emaar Properties and Project Management Institute (PMI), is to highlight the Dubai as a the Board of Executive Directors leading city in the field of project management, attract experts and leading specialists of competent international reputation.
