  • Legends of Screenwriting “Richard Maibaum” by Ray Morton
Legends of Screenwriting “Richard Maibaum” By Ray Morton Screenwriters are generally a cerebral lot and not usually thought of as men (or women) of action, but Richard Maibaum certainly was, especially when it comes to writing about the adventures of a certain British secret agent with a triple digit code name and a license to kill. Maibaum was born on May 26, 1909 in New York City. He attended New York University and the University of Iowa and then became an actor on Broadway. In 1930 he began writing plays, including 1932’s The Tree, 1933’s Birthright, 1935’s Sweet Mystery of Life (with Michael Wallach and George Haight) and 1939’s See My Lawyer (with Harry Clark). When MGM bought the rights to Sweet Mystery of Life to use as the basis for its 1936 film Gold Diggers of 1937 (screenplay by Warren Duff), the studio also signed Maibaum, who moved to Hollywood and began writing for the movies. Between 1936 and 1942 he wrote or co-wrote scripts for MGM, Columbia, Twentieth Century- Fox, and Paramount, including We Went to College (1936), The Bad Man of Brimstone (1937), The Lady and the Mob (1939), 20 Mule Team (1940), I Wanted Wings (1941), and Ten Gentlemen from West Point (1942). After the United States entered World War II, Richard spent several years in the Army’s Combat Film Division. Following the war, Maibaum became a writer/producer at Paramount, where he wrote his first spy movie— O.S.S. (1946), which was based on files and research provided by the actual Office of Strategic Services.

  • 'A Thoroughly English Movie Franchise' Spectre, the James Bond Films, And
‘A thoroughly English movie franchise’ Spectre, the James Bond films, and Genre JAMES CHAPMAN The James Bond films are genre films par excellence: they demonstrate both the industrial processes of popular film-making and the narrative patterns of repeti- tion and variation that underpin the idea of genre in popular cinema. Indeed the Bond films are such a uni ue and distinctive brand in their o!n right that the term "Bondian# has been coined to describe both the professional discourses of the film-makers on the one hand and the style and content of the films on the other. $s Janet %oolacott noted after observing the making of The Spy Who Loved Me '()**+ for an ,pen -niversity case study of media production: ".Bondian/ !as the phrase used by 01ubby2 Broccoli and other members of the production team to mean .in the spirit of James Bond/...To a certain extent the term .Bondian’ !as used to describe the Bond films, !hich !ere seen as a distinctive formula, a spe- cific genre of film# '()45, 6(7+. • History and a Case for Prescience: Short Studies of Sylvia Plath's 1956 Poems
JULIA GORDON-BRAMER History and a Case for Prescience: Short Studies of Sylvia Plath’s 1956 Poems “[Y]ou are being sounded and unpicked, and charted and reduced to your parts. However your new veiled Southpaw approach I should think is a match for their craft.” – Letter to Sylvia Plath from Ted Hughes, October 6 and 8, 1956 Ted Hughes knew that his wife Sylvia Plath had a few tricks in her poetry, and that her words were not always what they seemed to be. In my work in Fixed Stars Govern a Life: Decoding Sylvia Plath, volume one (Stephen F. Austin State University Press, 2014), I reveal new interpretations and multi-layered di- mensions of Plath’s poetry through the use of the tarot and Qabalah. It was only natural that I should go back to explore Plath’s early work and see if she had done the same in The Collected Poems, especially those written before her mystical masterpiece of Ariel. Critics of Ted Hughes have complained that Hughes, who edited Sylvia Plath’s The Collected Poems, considered Plath’s work before 1956, when the two came together as a couple, as “Juvenilia.” Many see this as Hughes giving himself credit for mentoring Plath, and his discounting her earlier work because it did not have his stamp of influence upon it. In his introduction to The Collected Poems, Hughes admitted, “One can see here, too, how exclusively her writing depended on a supercharged system of inner symbols and images, an enclosed cosmic cir- cus. If that could have been projected visually, the substance and patterning of these poems would have made very curious mandalas.

  • The Pamela Davies Collection: Continuity Supervision in British Widescreen and Colour Cinema
Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 20, 2020, pp. 220–227 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.20.17 The Pamela Davies Collection: Continuity Supervision in British Widescreen and Colour Cinema Steven Roberts Abstract: Film continuity supervision is a craft historically dominated by women. Yet, several years since Melanie Williams’s pathbreaking article on David Lean’s continuity supervisors, scholarship on this deeply gendered area of film production expertise remains lacking. In response, this dossier contribution will introduce Pamela Davies’ film continuity stills, catalogued by the author at the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum during an AHRC-funded placement (2018–2019). Davies secured the desired consistency of dialogue, cinematic staging and special effects in British cinema from 1948 to 1985, beginning with the post-war cycle of historical drama in widescreen and colour. Taking a multi-faceted archival approach, I discuss how photographs in the collection snapshot Davies at work and the stills photographers who collaborated with her during a transformative period in British cinema. Examining the stills in their material, craft and commercial contexts will raise new questions about continuity work and make the collection more accessible for researchers. The Pamela Davies Collection of photographs illuminate her craft as continuity supervisor in British cinema between 1948 and 1985. The photographs were referred to by Davies during film production and posthumously donated by her sister, Gillean Slade, to the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum at the University of Exeter. This historically significant acquisition was recently catalogued by the author with the assistance of Museum volunteer Ellen Mitchell. Individual items have since featured in museum displays and seminar materials, for example, in Exeter’s taught BA module on “Female Screens”.
