RHODES MINNIS CIRCLE In September Nicholas Reed gave us an interesting talk about Sir Kenneth Clark and Castle. Coming from a wealthy family Kenneth studied history and art at Cambridge and became involved in the Art world, mixing with Royalty and the famous. Kenneth bought the 14c Saltwood castle in 1953 and passed it on to his son Alan in1972. The family still occupy the castle although Alan has died, but the gardens are open to the public each June.

The competition was won by Connie Burren, with Marion Hoare 2nd, Paula Peers 3rd and Fran Davies 4th.

In November Barry Oldfield will tell us about his Father's War Diaries.

We meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 2.30pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month and visitors will be made very welcome. For further details please contact Marion on 862913

What a wonderful afternoon we had on 10th October when Lara Murphy came from The Canterbury Dogs Trust to talk to us. She gave us a history of the Dogs Trust which has been going for 128 years. Today a wide range of services are covered including taking in unwanted dogs, rehoming, education in schools, dog training, puppy farms and dog smuggling etc. Every dog that goes to the Trust is examined by a vet, vaccinated and microchipped. No healthy dog is put down and if the dog can’t be rehoused then it stays in the Trust’s care or fostered out. There is also a Canine Care Card which is freely available to ensure that if anything should happen to you then your dog will be cared for. Lara did a wonderful presentation including a couple of videos and everyone who came had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. They are a registered charity and get no government funding so rely on donations. I’m pleased to say that we gave her a cheque from the Elham Circle.

The next Elham Circle Meeting will be at 2.30pm in St Mary’s Church Hall on Thursday November 14th and the subject will be “ Healthy Advice for All’. Lorri 840643

‘DON’TS FOR WIVES’ was a self-help book written by Blanche Ebbutt in 1913 ‘Don’t think anything too much trouble to do for your husband’s comfort; remember he is occupied all day in working for you. Don’t for instance refuse to give him a bedroom fire in cold weather because it makes ‘too much dust’. Don’t have your husband’s den turned upside down once a week and everything put back into a different place. When the necessary amount of sweeping has been done, replace everything as nearly as possible in the position in which he left it, even if it is not quite tidy. You can be tidy in your own part of the house to make up for it. ’ Editor

On 19th September we had what was generally agreed to be one of the best talks of the year. Sue Scrivens took us through the year showing the most spectacular and rewarding shrubs and plants at their best each month. Her commentary was light-hearted but always informative and entertaining and the photographs, mainly of her own garden, were stunning. Mrs Scrivens then answered a number of questions from a very appreciative audience. An excellent evening. On 5th October we held our Autumn Coffee Morning and Bulb Sale. A huge and varied display of bulbs attracted lots of buyers; there were excellent shrubs and plants offered for sale by the Fifth Trust and of course a cake stall and raffle. It was a very successful morning enjoyed by all who bought or savoured their coffee at the tables in the hall-a gloomy day enlightened by good company. The speaker on 21st November will be Mike Bundock who will talk about Floral Clocks. We are now looking forward to the AGM on 12th December. The business side of the event is usually brisk and entertaining-this will be followed by the Christmas Party, always a chatty, jolly affair. Keep the date free. Friends and new members are always welcome at the monthly meetings held in the Peggy Pike Room at the village hall on the third Thursday of each month. Frances Horton 01303 840 550

LOVE YOUR LANDSCAPE Elham Valley Trees – November NL looks at Poplar trees.

These are fast growing trees with a variety of species and many hybrids; Aspen, White Poplar, Grey Poplar, Black Poplar, Lombardy Poplar. These trees do not coppice well and instead throw up suckers from the root, not necessarily from the stump of the old tree. Loose catkins appear March-April, before the leaves. The true form of Lombardy Poplar (Italica) is male only. Poplars attain an age of 80-100years. The Black Poplar is the common wild tree, with rounded burrs and swellings on its trunk.

The timber from poplars is not particularly good quality and is used for boxes and wood pulp. Commercially it has the advantage of growing quickly in the right conditions and is therefore used for screening. Poplars in Elham are most notable along the disused railway line next to the River Nailbourne and also The Six Sisters on Standard Hill.

The picture to the right is a sweet chestnut tree in , in St Martin’s Church field. Last month these trees were described as having ‘the appearance of being wrenched round by some mighty force’ … and this one does! Love your landscape! Editor

BE BUSY IN YOUR GARDEN in November 1. Spread well-rotted manure or compost on empty vegetable beds. 2. Tidy up the flower beds and borders and move wrongly placed shrubs. 3. Remove suckers from ornamental trees. 4. Plant bareroot roses, hedges and trees. 5. Dig out any annual plants that are still in your borders and compost them. 6. Clean your mower before storing it inside, compost the debris. 7. Gather up and store hoses and watering equipment indoors. 8. Save runner bean seeds when the pods have turned brown and crispy. Remove them from the pods and store in an airtight container for 2020. 9. Buy garlic bulbs and plant in well drained soil. Cover with fleece to protect from the birds. 10. Sow hardy broad beans in module trays and keep outside to develop over winter. Ideas from Gardenersworld.com, Editor

10 LOCAL NEWS KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOUR

Each month a village resident is invited to respond to this light-hearted interview.

Barbara Gosbee is better known by the older generation in the village. She says she is not so mobile now and relies upon her husband, Ed with his car, to get her about. She agreed to feature as the neighbour we can get to know this month.

I was born in ‘America’, which is in Old Street, so I’ve been here all my life. We lived in the middle of Beverage Wood, in Beverage Lodge, and I went to Elham How long have you been part Church of England School. Derek Boughton was a pupil at the same school. My family has been here a long time.

What do you consider your Marrying Ed and having our two children has been my greatest achievement because greatest achievement to date? I had five miscarriages which people don’t know about. When we were first married. We used to live at 1 Station Cottages and it was sort When were you happiest? of out of the village and yet in the village and I liked the open spaces. When Martin was nearly five we moved to The Orchards. All I wanted to do was work in a shoe shop. Life was very different when I was a What did you want to be when child. There wasn’t the choice. I spent most of my working life in ‘Vyes’ which was you were growing up? the grocer’s shop at the end of the village, it is called West End House now.

When I used to show in the Gardening Society Shows, I really looked forward to it. Which village event do you I used to put in 30 or so entries, like all my family did before me, but now I feel I most look forward to? should leave it to the younger generation. Gardening Tell us three activities that Looking after Ed keep you busy? And Ed says ‘moaning’, but I’m only reminding him about his tablets, for his own good.

I don’t drive, but even I can see that some people park inconsiderately. If everyone What one change in the village would improve your life? could park sensibly we wouldn’t have that dreadful situation up by the War Memorial. It is dangerous going round that corner. We have a dog, Eric, who is 15 years old, a border terrier. He’s got arthritis so he Cat, dog or goldfish? can’t go for a walk; he only goes out in the garden. He is a poor old fella until he sees a cat and then he can move!

What is the worst job you Taking a bucket and shovel and clearing up the sheep mess from The Gore before have ever done? Elham Football team could play, every other Sunday morning. This was in the 1980s when Ed ran the team. I used to come home and wash all the strip in the bath, but I

loved seeing it all red and white on the line. I’ve got two… What did the left eye say to the right eye? Between you and me, something smells. Tell us a joke. What sits at the bottom of the sea, twitching? A nervous wreck. (with thanks to my daughter, Sharon.)

Last thoughts, final word. We’ve had a good laugh this afternoon. Editor

News from Elham C of E Primary School

@ the heart of the community!

Associate School to the Royal Shakespeare Company

We are very excited at Elham Primary School to have been successful in our application to become an Associate School with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and the Marlowe Theatre for the next two years!

We will be working closely with both groups learning about and performing works from William Shakespeare. We will have visits from members of the RSC, who will be running workshops on performance, as well as theatrical skills including lighting, directing and set design. In the first year the focus plays will be 'As You Like It' and 'The Taming of the Shrew'. The year will conclude with our Year Six children performing in a secret location!

Book Week

Our busy first term came to a conclusion with our annual book week. We use this week to celebrate all that is amazing about the books we read.

The week started early with a visiting author coming to school on the Friday before the main week. James Campbell shared his books with the children. The 'Boy Face' series and 'The Funny Life of Pets' had the children laughing out loud. The visit led on to some excellent writing from the children, using what they had been taught as inspiration.

During the week we had another of our favourite authors visit- Andrew Clover. He also inspired the children with his creativity and fun.

Tales from the Book of Life shared stories and wonderful music. We also had visits from poets and had a daily book fair in the school hall.

Elham Historical Society writing competition

To launch our first writing competition in conjunction with the Elham Historical Society (EHS), Mr and Mrs Wheeler of the Manor House opened their home to the children of Elham School. Mr Wheeler gave them an in - depth tour of his home, sharing the history and lots of wonderful information along the way. When the children returned to school they all had an opportunity to write about something linked to their visit.

The stories were shortlisted down to a few in each class and the EHS chose winners, who will receive a history book as a prize.

We would like to thank the Wheelers for opening their home and investing so much time and effort in creating this educational opportunity for the children. It appears that the little doors of the Manor House have inspired many a mind!

We have lots of information about what we do on our website at www.elhamprimary.co.uk

INTERESTING IDIOMS To pay through the nose – to pay an exorbitant price for something. In the 9th century the Danes, following a successful invasion of Ireland, imposed a hefty tax on the people. Those who did not pay suffered the penalty of having theirnose split, but there is no historical evidence for this explanation. A more contemporary explanation is a theory based on 17th century slang – RHINO was a slang term for money (rhinocerical meant rich), but RHINOS is also the Greek word for nose. To ‘bleed’ meant to lose a lot of money or to have money extorted hence ‘to bleed someone dry’. Since noses bleed, a victim could be said to be paying through the nose. Editor

LOCAL NEWS Friends of St. Mary’s Elham Notice of Annual General Meeting

The 2019 Annual General Meeting of The Friends of St Mary’s will be held at St Mary’s Church on Monday 18 November 2019 at 6:30pm. Agenda will be available at the meeting. All are welcome and there will be light refreshments after the meeting.

CHURCH MATTERS Dear Friends, We are living in times of great change. Changes in weather as the winter approaches, change in schools or places of work, potentially major changes on the horizon for our country. Change is an important aspect of life and the way we interact with each other. If our ancestors had never changed their way of life we would still be living in caves. Change therefore can be for the good. It can help us interact better one with another. It can help us understand one another better and be relevant to our modern busy lives. The church is driving forward a period of change. The Changed Lives, Changing lives initiative being driven from Canterbury is intended to open up the church to all. To make church relevant to YOU! Churchwardens from Elham and Acrise along with one of the local ministers in training and the Benefice Administrator attended a training conference in October aimed at the concept of change. Topics discussed included widening access to local ministry, family and children centred worship and even a workshop on understanding your vicar! Several churches in the Elham area are experimenting with new services. The Café church has become well established at St Mary’s Elham, but also St Martin’s Acrise now has a family service on the fourth Sunday of every month, and there was a fantastically supported pet service at Denton St Mary Magdalene Denton recently. Attending church can have positive benefits to your mental and spiritual wellbeing. It can open up social networks and put you in touch with people who just may be able to relate to you and your situation. Have a think about attending one of the new services. Church is changing. How about you come and help us change? Written on behalf of Rev’d Jane.

ERA News Update General Meeting This was held on Tuesday 15 October in St Mary’s Church Hall. The key points discussed are covered below and the minutes of the meeting will follow. Wellbeing Pop Up Boutique – more than £1,000 raised! What started as a small fundraiser for the Wellbeing project turned into a full-blown boutique, galvanised by a very enthusiastic team. The boutique sold pre-loved clothes entirely donated by villagers and friends or sold on a 50-50 basis. October 5 was a sunny day and more than 100 visitors turned up and spent in excess of £1000. A big thank you to the villagers who dug deep into their wardrobes and donated such a tremendous array of wonderful clothes. This marvellous result would not have been achieved without the army of volunteers who collected the clothes, stored, ironed, and sold them, and most importantly the customers who spent so generously. Thanks also go to Colebrook Sturrock, St Mary's Church and Hall, Elham Farmers’ Market and those who advertised the event far and wide. Any unsold clothes have been distributed locally to three different charities. The money raised will be used to increase the number of activities provided by the Wellbeing group. Friendship lunch The monthly Friendship Lunches are growing in popularity as the word spreads. The last one on Thursday 10 October attracted 18 guests including Rev. Jane and Kevin the Methodist Minister, in addition to the “staff team”. The two ministers were greatly impressed and enjoyed themselves very much. The chat was terrific and guests thanked us for a happy time, saying they will be back next month. The project has definitely hit the spot! For those who have yet to try it, lunch consists of a choice of home-made soups, cheese, bread, cakes, fruit, tea and coffee, all for a £5 donation to cover costs. Lunches are held on the second Thursday of every month in St Mary’s Church Hall, starting at 12.30. Future dates: Thursday 14 November; Thursday 12 December – this will be the Christmas event with seasonal food plus talk and entertainment. Thanks to the money raised at the Pop-Up Boutique this event will be free. The next twice-yearly Welcome to the village for newcomers will take place in November. Details will be advertised around the village. Santa’s Grotto ERA is working in partnership with Kelli and her team at Colebrook Sturrock to set up Santa’s Grotto in their Elham office. More details will follow shortly, but anyone wishing to help can contact Sharon Jacob. Elham Village Stores Last year's Wine Tasting Event will be repeated on the 30 November and 1 December (11am-6pm). This will give people the opportunity to taste various wines and receive a 25% discount when buying six or more bottles of wine. /continued... 30 LOCAL NEWS

Turning the Tide on Plastics The group are working on the awareness event which they now hope will take place in the Village Hall in March next year. There will be tables where invited businesses will put forward their ideas on how to identify recyclable plastics and where to take them. KCC will explain their recycling system and answer questions. The churches will be invited to give their views on environmental issues. The group also plans to invite representatives from supermarkets, Veola the collection service, Elham School, Elham Gardening Society and DEFRA. The group’s next planning meeting is on Thursday 28 November at 7pm in the Education Room, Village Hall. Mobile Telecoms Pre-application Advice (EE and Harlequin): At the time of writing, no contact had been made between Folkestone & Hythe District Council and Harlequin, so there is nothing to report on how such discussions might be proceeding. Draft Plans: No changes have been made to the draft plans. The East Kent Hunt has indicated that it is not in favour of the current suggested mast site. The hunt and Harlequin have been asked to look at alternative sites and to assess viability. Drop-in Q & A: The Harlequin mast proposals were discussed at the General Meeting. Harlequin has offered to come down to do a question and answer drop-in session, open to all, but as individuals, once the plans are more firmed up. A public meeting has never been offered. It was agreed that ERA should ask Harlequin to come to Elham before plans are at a more advanced stage, to answer questions on a one to one basis about principles and technical options. Vodafone / O2: No further progress has been made with Vodafone and O2. 5G Consultation: There is a consultation out from Government in relation to 5G and permitted development rights. The document may be downloaded from www.gov.uk/government/ consultations/proposed-reforms-to-the-permitted-development-of-5g-and-extend-mobile-phone- coverage. Be aware that the consultation ends on 4 November 2019! 31 LOCAL NEWS County Councillor’s report Elham November 2019 I recently learned that Kent County Council spends nearly £6m a year on ‘community wellbeing services’ for older people, adults living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory impairments (in addition to mainstream care). These extra services are delivered by 52 voluntary and community organisations and cover activities such as volunteer run transport services, dementia cafes and befriending. KCC is consulting about how best to support these services in the future so that they are more ‘joined up’ and reach the right people. The consultation is available on www.kent.gov.uk/ wellbeingconsultation, until 01 December. If you want a paper copy of this then please contact me. KCC is also consulting on its 2020/21 budget and asking residents to tell us which KCC services are their priorities. People are often surprised by the range of services that KCC provides and the consultation is designed to explain this as well as collect your views on what matters most. It is available at www.kent.gov.uk/budget until 25 November. 25 November is also the date of the next Joint Transportation Board for our area and I’m expecting a proposal for a disabled parking space to be marked out in front of the Methodist Church in Elham’s High Street. It would then be a space that only those with a disabled parking (blue) badge may use. The JTB will be asked if the proposal should go out for public consultation and I expect this will be agreed. Depending on the public response the proposal will either return to the JTB for final decision or, if well supported by the public, it will simply be done. I’m pleased to report that since my last update, Highways England now expects the work at Junction 10a of the M20 to be sufficiently advanced to allow HGVs access to the proposed customs station at Ashford. KCC is still pressing for more customs stations to be set up outside Kent to assist HGVs get the right papers. We are also still asking for Kent Highways officers to be given power to direct HGVs so that we can help Highways England and control traffic if there is disruption. As I’ve written before – the KCC website has links to information on Brexit for individuals and businesses and our call centre will switch to an out of county location to avoid any disruption in Kent. If there is disruption then local radio is a good source of up to date information across the board and can be accessed even during a power cut with a battery powered or car radio. By the time you read this KCC will have a new leader as Paul Carter will be standing down on 17 October after 14 years in this role. Roger Gough who lives in West Kent is the leader elect. He’s a very bright, experienced councillor and a thoroughly nice man. Roger will be campaigning for Kent to have the infrastructure in place to properly support the growth we’ve taken in homes and jobs as well as protecting the things that make Kent special. I was at the Elham Parish Council meeting on 07 October to listen to local views as well as report on KCC matters. To those who’ve contacted me about the proposed telephone mast in Elham, I can confirm that it is the District Council that determines such planning applications not KCC. Susan Carey, Member Elham Valley, Kent County Council.

News from Elham Valley Cricket Club Season review:

2019 was another good year for the club both on and off the pitch. The Saturday league team (KRCL), much changed from last season and introducing several new players to league cricket, had a tough start to the season but recovered well, winning several crunch games at the end of the season to avoid relegation and set the foundation for hopeful success next season. The Sunday league team (KVCL) also had a reasonable season in division 2 of the league winning 5 of the 11 games to finish mid-table. The Saturday ‘trundlers’ team, a mixture of older veterans and keen youngsters, had another very enjoyable season - they even managed to win a few games this year!

Colts cricket

This year the club again successfully ran a full youth team section, fielding U9, U13 and U15 teams, as well as holding regular Saturday morning and midweek coaching sessions. Many of the U15 began to play men’s cricket for the first time and certainly did not look out of place – certainly their fielding an improvement on most of the regular players! Particular thanks must go to Paul Goldspring, Kavan Risby and Dan Bryant for organising the juniors this year, and also to all the coaches and parents who have helped along the way.

November Quiz night

th Our next Quiz night will be held on Fri 29 November starting at 7.30pm at Elham Village Hall Teams can consist of 6 to 8 people and the entrance fee is £5 per person. For more information please contact quiz master (well he does have all the answers!), Frank Hobbs on 01303 862188.

And finally ..

Thanks again from the committee to all the volunteers and supporters who have greatly contributed to the club this season. Hope to see you all in the next one!

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL 1-2-3 in response to a request from the editor

1.Going to work as a gardener on a crisp autumn morning, everything in life seems great. I love the peace and tranquillity - changing my career 15 years ago was one of the best decisions I made.

2. Returning from holidays and as we turn off the A2 into the Elham valley I always think what a wonderful place to live and how lucky we are - however great the holiday I'm always glad to be back.

3.Time with my family spent at Sunny Sands beach in Folkestone, fish and chips, rock pools, Dad telling two small people to make sure all the sand is off their feet and clothes, before they get back in the car - I'm smiling as I write this. Gavin Wales
