Man Inventor Genius & Man Artist Genius

July 14 – October 14, 2012

The Sioux City Art Center is proud to present its newest Blockbuster exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci: Man Inventor Genius & Man Artist Genius. This massive celebration of the mind of the original “Renaissance Man” brings to life many of Leonardo’s most remarkable ideas and inventions while taking visitors on a journey that features nearly two dozen carefully rendered reproductions of his artistic masterpieces.

While he is widely known as the creator of the world’s most famous painting, Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was recognized in his time as a genius in science and engineering. Made by the Italian family of artisans that has been building them to da Vinci’s specifications for two centuries, the meticulously crafted models in this exhibition include many interactive inventions and machines related to flight, hydraulics, mechanics, and war.

To view Leonardo’s paintings in a single trip, one would need a passport to visit at least five countries throughout Europe. Each of the painting reproductions is presented to scale, including the massive Last Supper, which is displayed in the Art Center’s atrium. By presenting Leonardo’s paintings along with his inventions, this exhibition reveals how his creativity flowed from careful observation and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

To enrich visitors’ experiences, the exhibition includes four interactive computer stations to explain how Leonardo’s designs work, a time line that chronicles Leonardo’s life, and a five-part docudrama film, The Life of Leonardo da Vinci, that is shown in its entirety daily in the Stark Lecture Hall: Tuesday through Saturday, the film begins at 11:00 am, with a special evening showing on Thursday beginning at 4:00 pm. On Sunday, one half of the 4.5 hour film will be shown beginning at 1:15 pm.

October 25 – December 2, 2012 Reception: Thursday, October 25, 5:00-9:00 pm

In conjunction with the Artilicious event on the first floor, the Main Gallery re-opens after the Leonardo da Vinci Blockbuster exhibition with a show of works from the Art Center’s most recent community art project, City Art Quilts. This project kicked off in 2010, bringing scores of drawings by artists from throughout the region, which led to the creation of seventeen City Art Quilts that were placed throughout Sioux City.

This exhibition brings many of these works back to the Art Center for a final exhibition and sale. The quilts include 4-foot square versions on MDO board that are suitable for outdoor settings, 3-foot square versions on canvas that are great for indoor settings, and framed drawings that are perfect for that little Darren Maurer, Dutch Masters empty spot on your wall.

The Sioux City Art Center Permanent Collection Underwriting for the Margaret Ann Martin Everist Permanent Collection Gallery and Educational Initiative is provided by the generous support of the M. A. Martin Everist Foundation. Additional support from the Gilchrist Foundation

Since July 2008, The Margaret Ann Martin Everist Permanent Collection Gallery has become the centerpiece of the Art Center’s educational program and a constant reminder about both the great artistic and collecting history of Sioux City. But the Art Center’s educational programs and its collection have continued to blossom and the time has come for a new assembly of artworks to grace the gallery.

The Gallery will be closed September 17 – September 25 to allow the Art Center to conduct a reinstallation of the artworks. The gallery walls will be organized and displayed in new ways, more works from its growing Legacy

Victor Vasarely, SIKRA-MC, 1969, screenprint Collection will be installed, and a brand new Permanent Collection brochure will Print Club of Cleveland Subscription Print #46; 969.01 be printed. The gallery will reopen on Wednesday, September 26.

Visitors to the new installation of the gallery will find more examples of the Art Center’s Legacy Collection on view. This collecting initiative was established in 2008 by the generous members of the Blockbuster Partners to fund an increase in the Art Center’s holdings of major Midwestern artists. The Partners were then joined by the M. A. Martin Everist and the Gilchrist Foundations, and the Art Center Association Board of Directors with funds from the Herffernan Fund, as well as a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. The Legacy Collection now includes 17 works by 13 artists from throughout the region. All of these artists will be represented in the new installation.

The Permanent Collection is supported with the Margaret Ann Martin Everist Educational Initiative, providing free educational materials, an outreach program to area public and private schools, and a Study Area, adjacent to the Permanent Collection Gallery. The Study Area’s non-circulating library allows visitors to learn more about the artists in the Permanent Collection. Recent additions to the non-circulating library have been made possible, thanks in part to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Larry Roots: On the Surface

November 3, 2012 – February 3, 2013 Reception: Saturday, November 3, 5:00-7:00pm

Larry Roots is one of our region’s most active artists and gallery directors. To celebrate his thoughtfully composed abstract artworks, the Art Center is bringing together a large selection of work he has created in recent years. Roots has the ability to use paint and a variety of other materials to portray emotions and ideas that are incapable of being expressed well through everyday verbal communication. There is in his work the sense that he is painting forces and ideas rather than things, even if his art occasionally gives us the slightest glimpse of a landscape, a figure, or a written language.

Roots earned his B.A. in painting from the University of Northern Colorado, Larry Roots, New Meaning, 2012, oil and mixed media on canvas, 64 x 68 inches Greeley. Though he is a full-time artist, he also directs two galleries with his wife Courtesy of the artist and Modern Arts Midtown, Omaha Judy: Modern Arts Midwest in Lincoln, Nebraska and Modern Arts Midtown in Omaha, Nebraska.

ONGOING EXHIBITIONS Work by Students in Sioux City Community Schools

August 4 – September 23, 2012 September 29 – November 25, 2012

Working in cooperation with the art teachers of Sioux City Community Schools, the Art Center is presenting a series of exhibitions featuring work by elementary, middle and high school students in the first floor Community Gallery.

Grant Wood’s Corn Room mural

The special installation of the Grant Wood mural was funded by a donation from Bill Turner.

Grant Wood’s Corn Room mural is shown in its entirety in the third-floor H. H. Everist Gallery. The Corn Room mural was one of four murals commissioned by Omaha businessman Eugene Eppley for his hotels. Originally part of the historic Martin Hotel, the Corn Room was created by Grant Wood in 1927, and then lost for decades under paint and old wallpaper, only to be rediscovered in 1979. In 1995, the mural was purchased by Sioux City attorney Alan Fredregill, who then donated the mural to the Art Center for the Permanent Collection. After Grant Wood, Corn Room, 1927, oil on panel significant conservation, the preserved mural, with its imagery slightly dimmed Purchased with funds provided by the Alan Fredregill Fund; 2007.17 and its colors shifted toward a golden brown, was put on exhibit in 2007.

The Fredregill Fund, established by the Sioux City Art Center’s share of the auction selling price of Grant Wood’s Corn Room, has allowed the acquisition of a number of prints by Wood and other important Regionalist artists. Work by Wood is on display in this gallery while works by other artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry are on display in the Permanent Collection Gallery. Be an

The Sioux City Art Center Family Guides

The Art Center’s Family Guides, the newest addition to the Education Initiative, developed this spring thanks in part to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support from the Gilchrist Foundation, has been a huge success. As an added incentive for families to use the Guides, the Art Center initiated the Art Star project, in which children who complete one or more of the five Guides earn prizes and become eligible for monthly awards.

Due to the popularity of this project, the Art Center has decided to extend it into a second phase. This second phase will begin with the reopening of the Margaret Ann Martin Everist Permanent Collection Gallery on September 26 and continue through the end of 2012. Children will earn a prize for each of the Guides they complete. Those who complete all five guides will become eligible for additional awards as the project continues. Calendar of Events

Jim Yanney and his children, Charese and Jim Yanney, Jr. purchased Andrew Langoussis’ sculpture, Solar Reef, and donated it to the Sioux City Art Center’s Permanent Collection in tribute to Do Yanney, Jim’s wife and mother of Charese and Jim, Jr. The sculpture was officially dedicated at the Art Center on June 28 at a dinner attended by 200 of the Yanneys’ family members and friends. Charese said that she felt the sculpture was a wonderful way to remember her mother, who loved art and appreciated detailed craftsmanship. The sculpture is a great description of Do’s character—exciting and unique, while strikingly beautiful with wonderful attention to detail.
