This massive celebration of the mind of the original “Renaissance Man” brings to life many of Leonardo’s most remarkable ideas and inventions while taking visitors on a journey that features nearly two dozen carefully rendered reproductions of his artistic masterpieces. While he is widely known as the creator of the world’s most famous painting, Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was recognized in his time as a genius in science and engineering. Made by the Italian family of artisans that has been building them to da Vinci’s specifications for two centuries, the meticulously crafted models in this exhibition include many interactive inventions and machines related to flight, hydraulics, mechanics, and war. To view Leonardo’s paintings in a single trip, one would need a passport to visit at least five countries throughout Europe. Each of the painting reproductions is presented to scale, including the massive Last Supper, which is displayed in the Art Center’s atrium. By presenting Leonardo’s paintings along with his inventions, this exhibition reveals how his creativity flowed from careful observation and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. To enrich visitors’ experiences, the exhibition includes four interactive computer stations to explain how Leonardo’s designs work, a time line that chronicles Leonardo’s life, and a five-part docudrama film, The Life of Leonardo da Vinci, that is shown in its entirety daily in the Stark Lecture Hall: Tuesday through Saturday, the film begins at 11:00 am, with a special evening showing on Thursday beginning at 4:00 pm. On Sunday, one half of the 4.5 hour film will be shown beginning at 1:15 pm.
