It is believed to be one of the very few "living forts" in the world (such as Carcassonne, France), as nearly one fourth of the old city's population still resides within the fort.[1] For the better part of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer. The first settlements outside the fort walls, to accommodate the growing population of Jaisalmer, are said to have come up in the 17th century. Patwon-ki-haveli Jaisalmer The haveli is dipped in an enchanting shade of gold and instantly draws your attention to the intricacy of its architecture. It is most famous for its fine wall paintings, beautiful jharokhas (balconies), archways and gateways. Gadishar Lake Jaisalmer A man-made water reservoir, the Gadisar Lake was once the only source of water in Jaisalmer. Constructed by the first ruler of Jaisalmer, Raja Rawal Jaisal, Sam Sand Dunes Jaisalmer Sam sand dunes are 30-60 meter tall genuine sand dunes located on the city outskirts, at a distance of 40 km from Jaisalmer in a village named 'Sam'. The foundation was laid in 1928 and construction of the palace was completed in 1943 under the guidance of chief architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur Mehrangarh. Mehrangarh, located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is one of the largest forts in India. Built in around 1459 by Rao Jodha, the fort is situated 410 feet (125 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls Jaswant Thada Jodhpur The Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph located in Jodhpur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur State in 1899 in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and serves as the cremation ground for the royal family of Marwar. The tour concludes with a visit to Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque. Return to the hotel for lunch at their delightful `1911’ restaurant. This afternoon, drive around New Delhi with its majestic boulevards and grand government buildings. India Gate, Delhi's triumphal arch, the residence of India's President, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, a complex of buildings that mix Mughal and Western architectural styles. We visit the Tomb of Humayun, beautifully restored, this monument is an early example of Mughal architecture. Overnight at the Imperial hotel. Sunday, 16th : (Delhi – Agra) 2 After breakfast, drive to Agra (approx. 3 ½ hours). (Presently, there are no flights connecting Delhi and Agra). In Agra, we stay at the Oberoi Amarvilas. The rooms & public areas afford uninterrupted views of the Taj Mahal. Lunch is at the hotel. In the afternoon, proceed to see the Taj Mahal – The ivory gate through which all dreams pass.
