Text accompanying the image reads: "This photograph was taken with a Kodak Baby Brownie camera (Hawkeye Model) given wi the boys magazine, Modern World, and it is very unfortunate time has not been given to the negative, hence the poor quality. The fire engine is opposite Tom Hughes' cycle shop in Wallgate, the building being the Canal Company offices, the engine was manned by volunteers from the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS). The firemen of the AFS were full time and working in shifts, resting in the room abovethe Air Raid Patrol (ARP) post. During the blitz, Wigan fire engines were needed to relieve the Liverpool and Manchester firemen so this engine then went up to Chapel Lane on standby when needed. The driver was George Day of Darlington Street and for practising, the engine was taken across the cobbled yard up to the edge of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal; water could then be pumped out. The Fire Engine was stationed at Wigan Pier for the duration of the 1939-1945 war. The warehouse on the left of the picture now houses the Way We Were museum, and the building on the right, now the Orwell Public House. It is interesting to note that the engine is parked where the Queen unveiled a plaque on 23 March 1986 to mark the official opening of Wigan Pier. Sandbags can be seen surrounding and protecting the Head Warden's post for the ARP covering the areas of Wallgate and Poolstock. My father was the head warden but I joined the Royal Navy during the Second World War, serving on the aircraft carrier HMS Victorious. However, that, as they say, is another story".
