Barnita Bagchi Acclaiming the Future A Critical Analysis of the Contemporary Value of High Fantasy Literature Foreword to this thesis I took the opportunity to write about a genre I feel passionate about for this thesis. As I started to look for secondary literature to support my analyses, what I found was almost completely based on related topics, not much on high fantasy itself. Especially on the subject of the fan- tastic, which is close but ultimately not relevant to my choice of genre. I’ve used one line from Todorov’s The Fantastic—almost the go-to work for literary critics interested in this area—in all, and it was a quote from another text to support the claim that the fantastic differs from the marvellous, on which high fantasy is built. As I started to worry about the sustainability of my own thesis, I realised that this is my topic. Consider everything that has been allowed to wear the tag of literature in the last few decades. Some of these definitely fall into the popular or cult category, yet are given serious considera- tion. Not high fantasy, as if the genre were already dead and buried with no other frontrunner than Tolkien. But when a genre—any genre—is still alive, turning out novels and having pu- blishers especially devoted to it (such as Tor Books), literary criticism cannot assume that no other literary work will be turned out. Therefore, its quiet refusal to pay serious attention to the genre is incomprehensible, even unreasonable, and has created a very dismissive atmos- phere—from the critics down to the mainstream reader public. -

III. Discussion Questions a. Individual Stories Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Rappaccini’s Daughter” (1844) 1. As an early sf tale, this story makes important contributions to the sf megatext. What images, situations, plots, characters, settings, and themes do you recognize in Hawthorne’s story that recur in contemporary sf works in various media? 2. In Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, the worst sin is to violate, “in cold blood, the sanctity of the human heart.” In what ways do the male characters of “Rappaccini’s Daughter” commit this sin? 3. In what ways can Beatrice be seen as a pawn of the men, as a strong and intelligent woman, as an alien being? How do these different views interact with one another? 4. Many descriptions in the story lead us to question what is “Actual” and what is “Imaginary”? How do these descriptions function to work both symbolically and literally in the story? 5. What is the attitude toward science in the story? How can it be compared to the attitude toward science in other stories from the anthology? Jules Verne, excerpt from Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) 1. Who is narrator of this tale? In your opinion, why would Verne choose this particular character to be the narrator? Describe his relationship with the other members of this subterranean expedition. EDITORIAL Sheila Williams THE 2016 DELL MAGAZINES AWARD This year’s trip to the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts was spent in a whirl of activity. In addition to academic papers, author readings, banquets, and the awards ceremony, it was a celebration of major life events. Thursday night saw a surprise birthday party for well-known SF and fantasy critic Gary K. Wolfe and a compelling memorial for storied editor David G. Hartwell. Sunday morning brought us the beautiful wedding of Rebecca McNulty and Bernie Goodman. Rebecca met Bernie when she was a finalist for our annual Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Ex- cellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing several years ago. Other past finalists were also in attendance at the conference. In addition to Re- becca, it was a joy to watch E. Lily Yu, Lara Donnelly, Rich Larson, and Seth Dickin- son welcome a brand new crop of young writers. The winner of this year’s award was Rani Banjarian, a senior at Vanderbilt University. Rani studied at an international school in Beirut, Lebanon, before coming to the U.S. to attend college. Fluent in Arabic and English, he’s also toying with adding French to his toolbox. Rani is graduating with a duel major in physics and writing. His award winning short story, “Lullabies in Arabic” incorporates his fascination with memoir writing along with a newfound interest in science fiction. My co-judge Rick Wilber and I were once again pleased that the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts and Dell Magazines cosponsored Rani’s expense-paid trip to the conference in Orlando, Florida, and the five hundred dollar prize. -

Progress Report #1
Welcome to the first progress report for the 2021 World Fantasy Convention! We are pressing on, in times of Covid, and continuing to plan a wonderful in person convention in Montréal, Canada. We have a stunning guest list and a superlative team for both planning and the creation of the gathering not to be missed. We will be at the Hôtel Bonaventure, an iconic landmark in the city. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown and just outside the Old Port of Montréal. It is near major roads, right across the street from Gare Centrale, the Montréal train station, and is directly connected to two Metro stations, making it easily accessible for both motorists and public transport users. We will be able to enjoy a lavish 2.5 acres of gardens with streams inhabited by ducks and fish as well as a year-round outdoor heated pool. Our committee is busy excitedly planning a convention that will surpass your every expectation. Our theme will be YA fantasy. The field of young adult fantasy has grown from being popular to becoming a dominant category of 21st century literature, bringing millions of new readers to hundreds of new authors. We are working on a diverse program that will explore this genre that celebrates fantasy fiction in all of its forms: epic, dark, paranormal, urban, and other varieties. We invite members to share what they enjoy, what they have learned, what they have written themselves, and what they hope to see coming in the field of young adult fantasy fiction. We look forward to seeing you all in Montréal! He also teaches Engl 318R (How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy) at BYU every winter semester. Dan Wells is the bestselling author of the I Am Not a Serial Killer trilogy. Peter Ahlstrom is Brandon’s personal assistant, and Karen is Peter’s wife. All four of them worked on Leading Edge at the same time. Special thanks to Emily Sanderson, Brandon’s wife, who watched the Ahlstrom daughters so that both Karen and Peter could attend this interview. Social Data: The trick to getting people to do things for you in the real world is to take them out to lunch. We met together at Chen’s Noodle House, a Chinese restaurant in Orem, UT (the place was Dan Wells’ idea). There is an authentic Chinese theme in the restaurant, right down to statues, chopsticks, and Chinese ambiance music. There were other customers in the restaurant at the time (though not too many), as well as wait staff &c. Cultural Data: “TLE” is this generation’s acronym for The Leading Edge, as it was called at that time. Quark Xpress is an older design layout program that has since been replaced in the university curriculum by Adobe InDesign. -
