demande.

The “Red London” group A factual briefing for the labour movement Workers’ Liberty www.workersliberty.org February 2019 Red London in their own words RInedt Lroonddonu isc at Fiaocen book page which deploys unevidenced smears rather than political argument against people they politically oppose. Its administrators are anonymous. Red London also builds support for contemporary Stalinist state formations (e.g. North Korea, China) and praises “High Stalinism” (the USSR in the 1930s and 40s). The page appears to be strongly aligned to the Communist Party of Britain and its paper the Morning Star (many posts share and defend Morning Star articles). They are also Labour supporters and members. Red London’s favoured “hate targets” are Trotskyists, anarchists and “Radical Liberals”. “RadLibs” are people who are tagged with caricatured identity politics and support for “political correctness”. This hostile positioning involves no useful criticism; rather it is a way to promote an anti-liberal (small “l”) and “masculine” politics. Akin to trolling, their attacks come out as piss-taking banter and/or “working-class” identity politics including a more disturbing “hard man” imagery, and gratuitous viciousness. We are politically concerned by the growing audience for the idea that murderous totalitarian Stalinist regimes, both historically and in the contemporary world, are somehow authentically socialist. However, as unpleasant as that is, most of that kind of material can be politically critiqued. In contrast, since 2016 Red London have made a specific attack on Workers’ Liberty which is straightforward defamation, accusing us of vile and criminal activity. Through the medium of meme-making and “jokes” and often by direct accusation, Workers’ Liberty has been accused of condoning or even actively promoting paedophilia or child abuse.

  • Manifestations of Anti- Semitism in the 21St Century
ANTI-SEMITISM RESURGENT: MANIFESTATIONS OF ANTI- ST SEMITISM IN THE 21 CENTURY 1 www.counterextremism.com | @FightExtremism ANTI-SEMITISM RESURGENT: MANIFESTATIONS OF ANTI-SEMITISM IN THE 21ST CENTURY Key Points Modern anti-Semitism is a repackaging of historic tropes. Anti- Semites have adapted conspiracy theories of the blood libel as well as Jewish influence in economic and governmental affairs to fit new circumstances, such as the accusation that Jews are responsible for spreading COVID-19, just as Jews were accused of spreading the plague a millennium ago. Jews have historically been denied political and economic rights, and modern anti-Semitism is an expression of the rejection of Jewish integration into society. While the twentieth century saw the rise of influential Jewish politicians around the world as well as the creation of the Jewish nation-state of Israel, conspiracy theorists continue to accuse Jews of dual loyalties and exerting too much influence in world affairs. Partisan politicians are also increasingly willing to incorporate anti-Semitic tropes into their rhetoric to attack opponents they view as serving other interests. Blatantly anti-Semitic historical legal restrictions on Jewish life have evolved into modern laws restricting basic tenets of Jewish life—e.g., kosher slaughter and circumcision—with support from both the left and the right, who argue they are protecting animal and children’s rights. These laws largely do not specifically target Jews but still have the effect of restricting Jewish practice. 2 Table of Contents Anti-Semitism By The Numbers ............................................................................................ 8 Reviving Anti-Jewish Laws .................................................................................................. 31 Modern Political Anti-Semitism .......................................................................................... 34 Holocaust Denial .................................................................................................................

DICTATING THE TERMS: GAMERGATE, DEMOCRACY, AND (IN)EQUALITY ON REDDIT Shane Michael Snyder A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2019 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Committee Chair Laura Landry-Meyer Graduate Faculty Representative Sandra Faulkner Timothy Messer-Kruse © 2019 Shane Snyder All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Committee Chair In late 2014 the mainstream press reported about a far-right movement that sought to discredit feminist, anti-racist, and trans-inclusive interventions in the video games industry, its products, and its consumer culture. Called GamerGate by its devotees, the movement began when American game designer Zoë Quinn weathered public harassment after her ex-boyfriend published a five-part essay falsely alleging she had sex with a game journalist to collect a positive review for her game Depression Quest. GamerGate activists launched a smear campaign against Quinn but attempted to absolve themselves of harassment by rebranding the movement as a game consumer revolt against unethical journalists and leftist academics. Almost five years later, GamerGate continues to grow in membership on its official subreddit, /r/KotakuInAction, which is a self-governed community hosted on the popular discussion forum-based social media platform Reddit. Shortly after /r/KotakuInAction materialized, a conscientious objector created the pro-feminist /r/GamerGhazi to resist GamerGate. Despite Reddit’s massive user base, its 1.2 million subreddits, and its ubiquity in American culture, it remains an underexplored space in the academic literature. Academics have neither adequately addressed Reddit’s role in promoting far-right communities like /r/KotakuInAction, nor the efficacy of using Reddit as a space for staging feminist resistance to such communities.

  • Community Embeddings Reveal Large-Scale Cultural Organization Of
Community embeddings reveal large-scale cultural organization of online platforms Isaac Waller* and Ashton Anderson Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto {walleris,ashton}@cs.toronto.edu * Corresponding author September 2020 Abstract Optimism about the Internet’s potential to bring the world together has been tempered by concerns about its role in inflaming the “culture wars”. Via mass selection into like-minded groups, online society may be becoming more fragmented and polarized, particularly with respect to partisan differences. However, our ability to measure the cultural makeup of online communities, and in turn understand the cultural structure of online platforms, is limited by the pseudonymous, unstructured, and large-scale nature of digital discussion. Here we develop a neural embedding methodology to quantify the positioning of online communities along cultural dimensions by leveraging large-scale patterns of aggregate behaviour. Applying our methodology to 4.8B Reddit comments made in 10K communities over 14 years, we find that the macro-scale community structure is organized along cultural lines, and that relationships between online cultural concepts are more complex than simply reflecting their offline analogues. Examining political content, we show Reddit underwent a significant polarization event around the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and remained highly polarized for years afterward. Contrary to conventional wisdom, however, instances of individual users becoming more polarized over time are rare; the majority of platform-level polarization is driven by the arrival of new and newly political users. Our methodology is broadly applicable to the study of online culture, and our findings have implications for the design of online platforms, understanding the cultural contexts of online content, and quantifying cultural shifts in online behaviour.

No 49 May 1983 20p BRITAIN Crush Reagan's invasion of Nicaragua! II rl The Central American isthmus has today been thrust centre stage in the international class struggle -- and in the Western imperialist drive to 'roll back Communism' from Havana to East Berlin and Moscow. While leftist guerrillas con tinue to score dramatic battlefield victories over the blood-soaked US-backed junta in EI Salvador, the left-nationalist Sandinista (FSLN) regime in nearby Nicaragua faces a brazen US sponsored counterrevolutionary invasion. The international working-class movement must come to the defence of Nicaragua against this imperi alist-engineered onslaught, aimed at overthrow ing the government which came to power in 1979 after a bloody struggle to bring down the US backed tyrant Somoza. The international Spartacist tendency (iSt) says: Kill the in vaders! Drive the US out of Central America! Complete the Nicaraguan Revolution! The American government does not even deny that it is providing support for the murderous counterrevolutionary mercenaries based in Honduras who have repeatedly invaded Nicaragua, killing hundreds of people. Early last month it was revealed that the CIA has spent 30 million dollars to arm and train an estimated 2000 of Sandinista army border patrol targets the CIA-backed counterrevolutionaries. its contras (counterrevolutionaries) who revolution. Download date:30. Sep. 2021 INTRODUCTION A dominant view of the communist party as an institution is that it provided a closed, well-ordered and intrusive political environment. The leading French scholars Claude Pennetier and Bernard Pudal discern in it a resemblance to Erving Goffman’s concept of a ‘total institution’. Brigitte Studer, another international authority, follows Sigmund Neumann in referring to it as ‘a party of absolute integration’; tran- scending national distinctions, at least in the Comintern period (1919–43) it is supposed to have comprised ‘a unitary system—which acted in an integrative fashion world-wide’.1 For those working within the so-called ‘totalitarian’ paradigm, the validity of such ‘total’ or ‘absolute’ concep- tions of communist politics has always been axiomatic.
