That's coming from a chick so hardcore she cut off one of her own titties! The premise of this one is pretty catchy. For some unknown reason, every single male on earth just suddenly drops dead. Doesn't matter. It happens. I can't even imagine the devastation, personally. Every husband, father, brother, boyfriend? Think of all the dead children! And every man is some woman's son, so Anyway, chaos rightly ensues Later, boys. Anyway, chaos rightly ensues. This guy, Yorick, and his male monkey somehow survive. So this is sorta his story as the Last ish Man on earth. The gist is that he's got to navigate this new dangerous world while on a quest to be reunited Y: The Last Man: Book 1 his girlfriend in Australia. And along the way, he's going to meet all sorts of women. Some good, some bad, most somewhere Y: The Last Man: Book 1 the middle. Good luck, dude! This was a pretty cool story. I'm not sure I was into it enough to seek out the rest of the story, but I did think it was interesting while I was reading it. This one is pretty much universally well-liked, so if you think this sounds like something you would dig, check it out. View all 48 comments. I have a lot to say about this. I have basically two feelings, two minds and two reviews. The short, part of me was very entertained by this and part of me kept screaming this is stupid. I actually wrote a story on this subject obviously not published a few years back with something just like this premise. I didn't know this existed. There is a lot of questions about what is going on in the story and there are many answers to be had so I don't understand what I have a lot to say about this. There is a lot of questions about what is going on in the story and there are many answers to be had so I don't understand what is really happening. The story is very well written, well scripted and the artwork is nice. It is doing it's job well. Here's the thing. Women hold life as sacred. They are not going to try and wipe out the species. They would not be trying to kill the last man. Women usually rule in groups in a matriarchy. They aren't as power hungry though that is there. There would be general bitchy-ness, but the roving groups of man hating women bent on killing off humanity. That is absurd. Y: The Last Man: Book 1 the story is extremely entertaining yet stupid. Women would not be bent on self-destruction. The man hating in the Y: The Last Man: Book 1 is ridiculous. Especially since all the men are gone but one or so. There is no reason for that anger any Y: The Last Man: Book 1. Women would come together and help each other out. There would be little reason to compete with each other. They would be in danger of killing the man trying to get his attention and fall in love with him. That is more like it. This telling is silly and I don't think Brian is writing women well in this story. Too much physical conflict. Women's conflict is more passive aggressive and emotionally abusive. I know there would be women who were mentally crazy and they could cause harm and danger, but women would come together and bond I believe. So, this novel is able to bring all this out and cause me to think, so it's doing it's job. I think it is very entertaining and I gave it a high score even while thinking the author has it all wrong and this is all wrong. I still got my money's worth, so I am excited to read more and see why the women want the last man dead and end the human race. I doubt he will be able to sell it to men, but it will be entertaining in the process. Y: The Last Man Book One on Apple Books

I realize that at only 33 pages long and as it is only the first installment in a long series, that this wasn't going to be a very in-depth read. The only relevant fact seemed to be the introduction to a multitude of strong and feisty female characters that will hopefully remain with us for the rest of the series. It was refreshing to Y: The Last Man: Book 1 females portrayed in non-stereotypical roles, and as sassy and fierce individuals of varying age and nationality, and I am looking forward to continuing this science-fiction journey with them. The storyline is done using a sequence of events occurring in different parts of the world. By creating the story this way we can understand the real global impact of the situation formulated in this title. Y: The Last Man presents as a premise males around the world dying spontaneously, leaving females as the only gender populating the earth. It caused an impact on me as a reader because massive deaths in males i One of the things that is relevant in this title is how the storyline is organized. It caused an impact on me as a reader because massive deaths in males in all species would be catastrophic for the evolution and continuity of the species. It would bring the end. There are so many reasons for me to recommend this graphic novel series to you. Y: The last man has Y: The Last Man: Book 1 art on its cover which depicts the evolutionary element intrinsic in the story Y: The Last Man: Book 1 including the monkey and the DNA. Colors complement the cover so well. Art inside is good and enhances the narrative. The author created enough mystery around the main character to make me want to return to the series. Why is he surviving? Is he special? I will stop writing about the goodness of this series because it is time for you to look it up and see for yourselves. Feb 12, Artemis Hobbs rated it really liked it. I already read the first volume ages ago. But enough time has passed and I felt it time Y: The Last Man: Book 1 give the series a restart, and this time, I'm gonna finish the whole damn thing. It's a remarkable concept that would have been created at some point no matter what. It was just sitting there waiting for someone to pick it up. What would happen? Maybe it's because I have been reading so much Sag I already read the first volume Y: The Last Man: Book 1 ago. Maybe it's because I have been reading so much Saga, but I notice the way he writes panels and screens; The action and pacing, while static, flows so smoothly from one narrative thread to the next. We're blessed to have Saga. But this is still a fun look back on how a good writer took his tools, refined Y: The Last Man: Book 1 and became a great one. Curiously the protagonist used the word "retarded" in this issue, and I have never quite known how to digest that one. Usually language of this sort is reserved for characters you are supposed to dislike. I know stories don't have to be so binary; and Brian K Vaughn is pretty knowledgeable about this kind of thing. But he's also simultaneously kind of responsible for making a lot of characters whose ethics can be a smidge ecclectic. Still trying to figure out if the intent is to make Yorick seem immature or if I'm over thinking it, I know. I point it out because it's been more than half a decade and I still dwell on the use of that word from the protagonist. A waste of brain space for sure, and I crave closure. Anyway, good concept. Fun re-read. Breezy and engaging as all of Vaughn's work is. I am tempted to call him our best writer. Because while people like Gaiman and Moore definitely have the literary chops to become "greats. It's the Mark Twain thing all over again. Because even if Gaiman and Moore are heroes of mine, Y: The Last Man: Book 1 are undoubtedly the wine of comics. Decadent, gorgeous, of high art. Vaughn is the water. And everyone needs water. Dec 30, Frau Zentner rated it liked it Shelves: comic-manga. Maybe not my favorite Vaughan story. I didn't like the artwork as much as in saga or paper girls no offense to the artist. It is still great. Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan

In typical comic book male-centric fashion, this series wonders what life would be like if all men died spontaneously I suppose if we're trying to put ourselves in the head of an early- nineties comic book reading teen, this might feel innovative. Unfortunately, I find that innovative in the Y: The Last Man: Book 1 of comics is pretty much Iron Age for the rest of literature. How does Vaughan manage to make a series with gender issues at its center so bizarrely sexist? Example: In a world where Y: The Last Man: Book 1 In typical comic book male-centric fashion, this series wonders what life would be like if all men died spontaneously What is the motive here? Characterwise, I was exceptionally not impressed. Even the main character has vague motivations. As for the women, pretty much none of them function as anything but placeholders: the token love interest, the sister who has gone astray, the protective mother. And here's where the cultural rant starts This is a symptom of thinking that is still prevalent in most of popular culture, although not to as great an extent in literature. F'rinstance, lets talk about movies: movies are a great medium for making political statements. Statements about social injustices, such as the way that women are objectified, sexualized, expected to live up to some bleached, shaved, makeup-smeared, surgically modified yet waifishly thin ideal that has been developed over centuries of patriarchal society This poor guy above has been so mentally warped by Hollywood and advertising that he's incapable of developing a physical attraction to any of the normal girls he knows in real life. Let's take a moment to pitty him. Okay, we done? Fortunately, Y: The Last Man: Book 1 blonde porn star moves in next door, and immediately falls for him, even though he's intensely dorky, because, you know, it's what's on the inside that counts. But, I'm not just cherry-picking films here. But surely this is a phenomenon in teen comedies? Well, look at "romances. Aren't these supposed to be geared more towards female audiences? It really bothers me that I'm more bothered by this film than any women I know. End rant. Okay, BUT, regardless of how inadequately this comic deals with gender issues, it at least TRIES to grapple with them, and it does a better job than any of the movies mentioned above. Perhaps by the end of the series, the author's portrayals of gender issues will become more interesting and sophisticated. This was an entertaining comic, and I plan on continuing it for at least a little longer View all 90 comments. Feb 07, Felicia rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. So there's this thing that happens in post-apocalypse stories that I need to talk to you about. You know how in a zombiepocalypse story we occassionally receive hints that it might be better for the women to stay safe so they can make babies? Usually it's only hints, and the male characters don't seem to want to offend the post-feminist sensibilities of the women, so instead the women tote guns and put their wombs at Y: The Last Man: Book 1 of becoming a zombie-buffet. But everyone gets along-ish, and there are us So there's this thing that happens in post-apocalypse stories that I need to talk to you about. But everyone gets along-ish, and there are usually plenty of women and men, so it doesn't seem like fertility is Y: The Last Man: Book 1 most important concern. Or you get the big, bad group of fascist men trying to turn some poor girl into a "breeder" for the new human race, but she tends to rise up, spank their patriarchal asses, escape with her girl power intact, and hook up with some nice guy with whom she's fought for survival. And in the bleakest of apocalypses there's no hope anyway, so who gives a shit about procreation? Everyone's dead or dying, cannibalism is running rampant, society has failed, and humans are doomed to extinction. The best the survivors can do is keep hiking down some road to whatever is further down the road with the world as nothing but the road. This book really pisses me off to no end. I'm fine with the Amazonian self-mutilators I can buy an angry, post-apocalyptic group of violent women. I am willing to suspend my disbelief that Yorick and his monkey make it through the manpocalypse as the only surviving Y chromosomes. I'll yawn and tolerate the Yankee setting of yet another apocalypse. I'll cringe but cope with yet another bad ass, dreadlocked, African-American woman who's the most capable and violent Y: The Last Man: Book 1 around. I'll even believe that spindly little Yorick can pass as a woman as long as he has his gas mask on. But what I won't believe, what I won't buy, where I won't suspend by disbelief, where I am not fine is with the idea that Yorick would ever, EVER, be allowed to wander around the winter of homo sapienism with one body guard, risking his testicles for some stupid, pointless, selfish, idiotic search for the love of his life and Y: The Last Man: Book 1 sister. His sperm, and Ampersand's, would be the most important substances known to womankind not because he is a man but because of sheer practicality. He would be protected whether he liked it or not. He would be imprisoned. His sperm would be used to impregnate. It would be used to Y: The Last Man: Book 1 an immunity for future boys. It would be used for the survival of homo sapiens. I heard this book was really great -- a must read graphic novel.
