Melinda and Her Sisters: Reconsidering a Suffrage Operetta as Pageantry A thesis submitted by Kendall H. Winter in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music Tufts University February 2017 Advisor: Stephan Pennington ii Abstract This thesis claims that the sui generis classification of Belmont and Maxwell’s Melinda and Her Sisters as a suffrage operetta is to blame for the lack of extant scholarship on the work. In its place, I offer the analytical framework of pageantry. Relying on contemporaneous press and practical guides and recent histories of each genre, I reconstruct the commercial and critical atmosphere in the year the work was created, 1916. I also draw on suffrage propaganda, government documents, and court cases to convey the sociopolitical tension of the historical moment. By placing the two genres in dialogue, I reveal a chiasmus of gender and class coding attendant to each. I conclude that it was the relatively high cultural capital of “suffrage operetta,” and not its aptness of description, that ultimately led the creators to market their work as such. Work History News New York Labor History Association, Inc. A Bridge Between Past and Present Volume 34 No 2 Summer/Fall 2017 I’ve got something to say Lifelong activists honored at Clara Lemlich Awards Aisha al-Adawiya has been a force in interfaith-based activism in New York City and around the world for nearly four decades. She founded Women In Islam in 1992 in response to atrocities perpetrated against Muslim women in refugee camps in Bosnia. In her introduction, Sarah Sayeed, from the mayor’s office, noted al-Adawiya’s commitment to conflict resolution, cross- cultural understanding, and peace building, as well as her efforts on the Schomburg Library project documenting black religious heritage. Lidia Correa, originally from Puerto Rico, dedicated herself to helping fellow New York City garment workers when she was a sample maker, and that dedication has never waned. These differences are particularly salient in the fraught role of black woman suffragists, who, while dedicated to the cause, were frequently unwelcome in the white-dominated state and national movements. In January 1910, white suffragist Alva Belmont met with three black suffragists—Irene Moorman, Sarah Garnet, and Maria Lawton—to discuss forming a black branch of Belmont’s suffrage organization. -
