  • YA HEARD ME? Is a Documentary Film About a Regional Version of Hip-Hop Specific to New Orleans, Louisiana Called “Bounce”
Directed by Matt Miller and Stephen Thomas RUNNING TIME: 77 min www.yaheardmefilm.com CONTACT: Kim Dixon, Emily Froelich dominion3 Public Relations 6464 Sunset Blvd. Suite 740 Los Angeles, CA 90028 Ph: (323) 466-3393 Fx: (323) 466-2773 [email protected] [email protected] DIRECTORS’ NOTES YA HEARD ME? Is a documentary film about a regional version of hip-hop specific to New Orleans, Louisiana called “Bounce”. Bounce is not just a style of music but a holistic community involving dance, block parties and clubs, which celebrates the unique contemporary story of New Orleans urban lifestyle. YA HEARD ME? uses extensive interviews and footage of the Bounce scene from 2002-2006, as well as an archival library of NOLA television program “All Good In The Hood” spanning the Bounce scene from the inside from 1997 until the present. Post-Katrina follow up in such locations as Houston, Atlanta, Mobile, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, make this documentary a snapshot into a culture rooted in tradition, then uprooted by tragedy. The resulting story is a vital, raw, rhythm driven experience told by the characters that created this important community. YA HEARD ME? is a definitive view of a people, a time and a location that may never exist in the same way again. Matt Miller Stephen Thomas SCRATCH MAGAZINE, SEPT/OCT 2007 More Bounce To The Ounce A new documentary goes deeper into the roots of New Orleans rap. “Triggerman” is merely the rue in New Orleans bounce's gumbo. The first documentary about bounce, Ya Heard Me, is a bottom-up look at the genre.

  • Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. Born Jason DeLaney, J Lyric is a New Orleans Hip Hop sensation destined for super stardom. From the time he was a young child, J Lyric’s family and friends were certain he would go on to do something special and he has not disappointed. Becoming a Hip Hop artist may not have been the first item on J Lyric’s list, but it is impossible to deny his talent after listening to any of his music. At an early, age J Lyric lost his brother and cousin to violent crimes which made a huge negative impact on his life. Music became his therapy to release the emotions behind all the curveballs life would throw at him. J Lyric has the stellar ability to cross any barrier, making his music and brand ultra-marketable. Having been influenced by legendary music artists such as Prince, Tupac, Sade, Nas, MAC, Mystikal, Drake, Norah Jones, and John Legend, J Lyric’s cross-genre appeal is evident. If any music professional has the ability to take the globe by storm, it is J Lyric. He has collaborated with a slew of local and national artists, such as C Murder, Curren$y, UNLV, Magnolia Chop, Lucci Lou of YMCMB, and many more.
