  • ULRICH ERBEN PITTURA - Determinare Lo Sconfinato - Curated by Helmut Friedel September 29, 2017 - December 1, 2017
ULRICH ERBEN PITTURA - determinare lo sconfinato - curated by Helmut Friedel September 29, 2017 - December 1, 2017 Painting always involves the interaction of colour and surface. The edges, the boundaries, every tangent of one surface with another, provide the outlines for vibrating zones of contested space - separations and mergings. These contours can stand out crystal clear and collide hard, rigidly with neighbouring colour fields, like a cut; but they can also, as is usually the case with Ulrich Erben, become an exciting, tension-filled optical game for the viewer. This is often the case in paintings in which two colour fields permeate each other in inverse gradations of brightness, overlap each other or waveringly touch. Only towards the final, outer edge of the graduated brightness of one field does the presence and relative effect of the other colour field become visible. The result is near bafflement, because the precise point at which the change from one colour field to the other takes place cannot be located, the viewer misses it every time. These shifts take the viewer by surprise most often when the interchange is between two fields of the same or similar colours. Then the viewer is looking, as it were, into a canvas on which an image is shown, an image in which, amid the glistening light of a snowy, misty landscape the contours of nature are suspended. In the images of Ulrich Erben, then, the viewer encounters a boundary between that which is still visible and that which is vanishing into boundless mystery. In its painterly capture of the intangible, his art of silence treads hitherto unseen territory.

Light in / as image Light as a visual art topic, object and artistic installations from 1950 up to today. 50 artists presenting around 80 works of art from the Daimler Art Collection. Daimler Site Stuttgart-Möhringen April 13 th , 2018 – December 9th , 2019 Following on from their experiments with light, movement and technical Ulrich Erben, Lichtraum, 1972 image design in the 1910s and 1920s, the representatives of the European Zero avant-garde incorporated light in singularly different ways into their paintings, installation art and sculptures. Artists from the cultural centers of Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Paris and Milan used refracting grids, reflections, mirrored light, rotating lamps and kinetic light objects. In parallel to this painters in the abstract lyrical reduced style of painting worked on the interweaving of light and artistic space in their graphical works and painting. In the 1970s and 1980s the field was expanded to include neon objects, abstract monitor images, conceptual light direction or temporary installations in public spaces and in nature. This wide spectrum and experimental approach can be seen in contemporary international art. Here highly individual solutions and use of contemporary technologies come into play. Around 50 artists from 15 different countries and 80 works of art between 1950 and today make up the exhibitions. Participating artists from the Daimler Art Collection: Absalon (F), Yaacov Agam (IL), Leonor Antunes (PT), John M. Armleder (CH), Anna Beurer (D), , Madeleine Boschan (D), Martin Boyce (GB), Erdmut

  • Dein Freund Der Baum Ist Doch Nicht Tot. Denn Wenn Ich Mir Unseren
