2014 Wagner Baseball - Page 4 @WagnerAthletics | @WagBaseball | WagnerAthletics.com Offense Explodes All nine regulars hit safely as Seahawks erupted 12 runs and 17 hits en route to posting an easy 12-5 victory over the Knights in the series opener on Friday. The support was more than enough for Casey (2-4), who struck out five while yielding just an unearned run on six hits over 7.0 innings. Casey During NEC Play ... Is an impressive 10-5 with 58 strikeouts, against 24 walks, and a 3.74 ERA over 130 innings. Additionally, when pitching at home during that time Casey is 6-1 with a 2.88 ERA and 35 strikeouts, against just 11 walks, over 72.0 innings. Law Of Averages One game after crossing the plate 12 times, Wagner could only manage one run of offense in the first game of a doubleheader with FDU. However, that was all junior LHP Matt Morris needed as the hard-throwing lefty spun his first collegiate complete game shutout. In the Seahawks’ 1-0 victory, he limited Knight hitters to a miniscule .167 average (4-of-24) and did not permit a runner to reach third safely over his dominating seven-inning performance. NEC Comes Calling ... Again For the second time this season Morris was selected as the NEC Pitcher of the Week, sharing the honor with Bryant’s Craig Schlitter. Morris notched his first honor after pitching a career-high 7.1 innings in the Green & White’s 2-1 victory over Army. Interesting Casey and Morris each didn’t yield an earned run to FDU for the second-straight season. Long Clinches Series After dropping a 7-3 decision in the third game of the series, Wagner rallied for a 5-1 win over FDU in the series finale between the teams. Long clinched the series with the Seahawks’ third dominating performance from a starting pitcher on the weekend as the Green & White hoopster yielded just one run on four hits over 7.0 innings en route to his first collegiate victory. Long, like Morris two starts before him, limited Fairleigh Dickinson to a miniscule .167 average (4-for-24). Domination Both Morris and Long did not allow a leadoff hitter ro reach safely against the Knights (0-for-14). A Happy Birthday After dropping both ends of a doubleheader on his 32nd birthday, Carone’s 33rd was much happier thanks to the Seahawks’ series-clinching victory over FDU on Sunday, April 13. As a collegiate player, assistant and head coach Carone is 11-3 when playing/coaching on his birthday at the Division I level. Man Of Many Gloves Dini is leading Wagner in positions played (5) as the 2013 NEC First Team selection has seen time at catcher (23 games), second base (6 games), shortstop (1 games), third base (12 games) and DH (1 game). Homer Happy Dini and Mazurkiewicz each homered in the Seahawks’ 6-2 series-opening win at LIU Brooklyn, marking the first time in games 21 that Green & White has had two players go deep in the same game. Wagner didn’t have to wait very long for the second time as Flynn and Smith each homered in an 8-4 loss at No. 28 Seton Hall. Touch Em All Mazurkiewicz’s was the first of his collegiate career and helped to cement the Seahawks’ series-opening 6-2 victory over the Blackbirds. NEC Openers Thanks to the win over LIU Brooklyn, the Green & White has now won 10-of-12 conference-opening tilts dating back to the 2002 season. Casey/Battaglia Dominate In Brooklyn Casey and sophomore RHP Anthony Battaglia combined to hold the Blackbirds to zero earned runs over 9.0 innings of four-hit ball in the Green & White’s NEC opener. Casey surrendered just two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts over 5.2 innings before Battaglia worked 3.1 hitless innings of relief to earn the save. Batz In Brooklyn Battaglia has now recorded 9.2 scoreless innings of relief for his career against LIU Brooklyn, yielding just five hits. Facing The Best After an 8-4 setback at No. 28 Seton Hall, eight of Wagner’s 27 losses have come to teams ranked among the top-30 nationally. In those games, Mascelli is batting a team-best .379 (11-for-29) with four multi-hit games. Impressive The opposition from the Green & White’s first five weekend series’ (Elon, Texas State, Army, No. 8 Cal Poly, No. 15 UC Santa Barbara) have a combined 143-72 (.665) record. In The Pros 2013 Seattle Mariner 14th round selection Ian Miller recently started his second pro season with the Clinton LumberKings of the Low A Midwest League and is hitting .286 (12-for-42) with 10 runs, five walks, four extra-base hits and three stolen bases over 12 games. What A Difference A Year Makes Last season, Wagner posted a 22-16 win over St. John’s with the teams combining for 38 runs on 39 hits in a game that took 4 hours and 12 minutes. This year, the teams recorded a combined three runs on nine hits and needed just 2 hours and 21 minutes to complete the non-conference tilt. Seahawks Defeat Hawks The Seahawks snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over former NEC rival Monmouth in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 1. A Day Of Firsts In the victory at MU, Marsh collected his first collegiate win with two strikeouts over 2.2 scoreless innings of work. Long also earned his first career save by getting the final five outs, highlighted by striking out the side in the ninth. The Great Lawn & The Great Mammino Despite not recording the win or the save at Monmouth, sophomore Paul Mammino arguably was the x factor as the 2013 Freshman All-American entered to a bases loaded situation in the third before promptly getting the final out. Mammino would go on to retire the first 14 batters he faced before being lifted after allowing a pair of eight-inning singles. Over the last two games against the Hawks - both Green & White wins - Mammino has 10 strikeouts, against just one walk with a 1.42 ERA over 12.2 innings of work. UCSB Recap No. 15 UC Santa Barbara took all four games from Wagner despite the fact that junior Dini and Mascelli each hit .333. Mascelli reached base safely in all four games and scored four runs while recording a team-best .412 OBP. Dini, meanwhile, notched a triple, home run, four RBI and two runs while having a hand in six (4 RBI | 2 runs) of the Seahawks’ 10 runs. In the opener, the Green & White took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning thanks to Casey, who struck out two and didn’t walk a batter over 6.0 solid innings of two-run ball. After being swept in Saturday’s doubleheader, the visitors trailed by just three runs after 7.5 innings before yielding four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

2014 Wagner Baseball - Page 5 @WagnerAthletics | @WagBaseball | WagnerAthletics.com Cal Poly Recap The Green & White gave No. 8 Cal Poly all it could handle in a three-game series. After succumbing to the Mustangs and ace LHP Matt Imhof by an 8-1 count in game one, Wagner dropped a 3-1 heartbreaker on Saturday before losing 7-2 in the Sunday series finale. In the final game, the Seahawks twice left the bases loaded before Cal Poly put the game away with three runs in the eighth. Morris Brings It Morris turned in his second-straight outstanding start of the season against No. 8 Cal Poly, striking out seven over 6.0 innings of two-run ball. Mascelli Snaps Slump After going hitless in 18 straight at-bats, Mascelli snapped his slump in a big way over three games at No. 8 Cal Poly, batting .455 (5-for-11) with two walks, two RBI and one double. In the first game, his RBI single against projected 2014 MLB Draft Pick LHP Matt Imhoff accounted for the lone Wagner run. Successful Debut Long, who also plays for the basketball team, was clocked at 95 MPH at No. 8 Cal Poly and entered to a bases loaded jam before promptly getting the final out. The 38th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 2012, then capped his impressive outing with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh inning. Switching Sides The Seahawks dropped two of three to Army at MCU Park in Brooklyn while serving as the road team. The Green & White then turned around and hosted Rider at MCU Park. The Coney Island based home of the Brooklyn Cyclones had field turf installed when the original playing surface had to be replaced following Superstorm Sandy. Pitching Steps Up In Win Over Rider In a win over Rider, the bullpen combined to hold the Broncs to just four hits over 5.0 scoreless innings of work. Battaglia earned the win and Adams the save as each hurler pitched 2.0 frames As a unit, the Seahawk pitching staff limited the Rider hitters to a paltry .077 average (1-for-13) with runners in scoring position. Dini Getting It Done Dini helped the Green & White snap its season-opening seven-game losing skid with a solo home run in a 2-1 game-one victory over Army. Wagner added its second run in the top of the sixth when Flynn scored what would prove to be the winning run. Adams finished off the victory with 1.2 innings of hitless ball in notching the save. Morris Named NEC Pitcher Of The Week Morris earned the victory against the Black Knights and was named NEC Pitcher of the Week after allowing just one unearned run on four hits over 7.1 dominating innings. The Garden State native also struck out three while limiting Army to a .160 average and surrendered just one hit over his final three-plus innings of work. Mapquesting It In one of the more obscure non-conference match-ups of the year, Army served as the home team in Brooklyn despite having to travel 60 miles compared to the 10-mile trip for Wagner. The series garnered attention in Eric Sorenson’s National Column: “Sick of the weather being a factor in canceling more of their games, Wagner and Army decided to move their three game series from West Point, down to the Brooklyn Cyclones’ MCU Park near the beach in NYC. So Wagner traveled 10 miles across water to be the road team and Army traveled 60 miles down the Hudson River. MCU Park has a full field turf playing surface, so as long as there is no rain – or snow – the series should get played.”

Heartbreak In Texas Wagner dropped all three games of its series at Texas State by three runs or less, including two by two runs. Everything’s Bigger In Texas After going a combined 3-for-20 in the opening weekend at Elon, Flynn and Mazurkiewicz broke out in a big way at Texas State. Both players reached safely in all six games, batted safely in five games and recorded three multi-hit games. Flynn posted team-highs in average (.500), slugging (.700), OBP (.643), hits (5) and walks (4), highlighted by reaching base safely in seven of his 10 trips to the plate during Saturday’s doubleheader. Mazurkiewicz, meanwhile hit .417 with five hits and three RBI while reaching base safely at a .500 clip. Dini Named To Johnny Bench Award List Dini was one of 72 backstops to be named to the official watch list for the 2014 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com. The Long & Short Of It Long was tabbed as the preseason Rookie of the Year by Baseball America and was drafted by the S.F. Giants in the 38th round of the 2012 MLB Draft before attending prep school. At The Ballpark Wagner holds an all-time record of 90-51 (.638) at Richmond County Bank Ballpark since the program began calling the stadium home for the 2008 campaign. Additionally, the Seahawks are 60-37 (.619) during NEC games and 30-14 (.682) in non-conference match-ups. Bailey On The Bump Former Wagner standout and 2006 graduate Andrew Bailey earned his first World Series Championship as a member of the Boston Red Sox a year ago and recently signed a contract with the New York Yankees. Home Openers The Seahawks were victorious in their home opener for the seventh-straight year with a 3-2 win over Rider and is a combined 7-0, all-time, in openers at Richmond County Bank Ballpark and MCU Park. During that time, Wagner has outscored the opposition by a 38-17 count. Bailey vs. Carone Bailey and Carone squared off during the 2003 season and it was Bailey that got the better of Carone, leading Wagner to an 8-3 victory over Monmouth (4/23/03). Bailey struck out six over 5.2 innings of one-run ball while the Seahawk coach was tagged for four earned runs over four frames. 2014 NEC Poll Bryant was tabbed first with Sacred Heart second, CCSU third, Sacred Heart, LIU Brooklyn fourth, Wagner fifth, the Mount sixth and Fairleigh Dickinson seventh. Carone In The Pros Carone has helped 16 of his former players, including 12 pitchers, sign contracts with Major League teams since 2006. Last year, Miller was taken in the 14th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Up Next Wagner will continue its nine-game homestand against Hofstra on Wednesday, May 7 with first pitch slated for 6:00 pm.
