This is likely the first time that they will be home with you for an extended period of time since starting at Iowa. Remember that it is important for them to have their independence, but they may still need you for many things. Communication is key! Discuss rules for their stay at home. While it is important for you to respect their individuality, your student still needs to know that there are rules and courtesies to be observed. Also, ask questions! Honest inquiries and open conversations about your student’s experiences form the basis of a positive relationship between you and your student.
