volume 9 issue 17/2020 WHEN GERMAN SERIES GO GLOBAL INDUSTRY DISCOURSE ON THE PERIOD DRAMA DEUTSCHLAND AND ITS TRANSNATIONAL CIRCULATION Florian Krauß University Siegen [email protected] Abstract: The article takes a closer look at the current industry discourse on the transnational circulation of German series. At its centre is a case study of the 1980s period drama Deutschland (2015-2020), based on interviews with key executives and creatives. What is it that makes such ready-made TV fiction go transnational, according to the involved practitioners and in this specific case? Textual factors in particular are examined, such as the thematic and aesthetic extension of the historical-political ‘event’ miniseries through Deutschland. Furthermore, the article explores factors in respect to production, including screenwriting and financing, in the context of the dynamic TV landscape in Germany and Europe. Keywords: German television, television series, television production, global television, television scriptwriting, European TV series, period drama, German TV fiction 1 Intr oduction ‘Showrunners and Antiheroes – What Does the German Series Need for International Success?’1 was the title of an industry panel held adjacent to the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, or Berlinale, at which the first season of the espionage coming-of-age drama Deutschland (2015-2020) premiered. Also during the festival, its sale to the US – a market particularly valued in a Western, transnational context – was announced. The unofficial Berlinale event, where industry attendees applauded this news, and the following media coverage on the US export of Deutschland 83,2 are just a few examples of the recent, ongoing discourse on the transnational circulation of German TV drama. -

INTRODUCTION Q In 1988, at the border between East and West Germany, military officers working for the Ministry for State Security (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, MfS or Stasi) compiled a dossier of single officers aged twenty-eight and over in the East German Border Command South. The documents detail twenty- five soldiers’ personal lives: their relationship histories, appearance, hobbies and interests. The dossier’s aim is to explain why these soldiers are single: Approaches to women unsuccessful for various reasons: 4 officers Unattractive to women: 2 officers Negative experiences with former partners that have caused reluctance towards new relationships: 3 officers.1 The document groups all twenty-five officers in this way, before adding: ‘no sexually abnormal behaviours by any of the 25 single officers, including signs of homosexuality, were identified’.2 The investigations appear motivated by concern about homosexuality in the ranks, but also by a preoccupation with men who deviate from the military’s image of masculinity in other ways. This book explores that preoccupation, and this dossier encapsulates many of my arguments about East German masculinity. The document shows the National People’s Army (Nationale Volksarmee or NVA) actively seeking to understand soldiers’ complex and individual masculinities, with the army command troubled by and suspicious of even minor deviations from its soldierly ideals. Retro Quality and Historical Consciousness in Contemporary European Television Louis Bayman, University of Southampton Abstract: This article investigates the trend represented by the recent TV series This Is England 86 (2010), Deutschland 83 (2015) and 1992 (2015). It analyses retro in the series as enabling an exhilarating experience of the music, fashions and lifestyles of the past while claiming to offer a serious social history. The article thus takes issue with theories of retro that view it as ahistorical (for example Guffey), to demonstrate how retro in these series enables a particular dramatic conception of the dynamics of national history, whether in post-imperial decline (This Is England), a westalgie for the grip of geopolitical conflict (Deutschland 83) or the cyclical progression of trasformismo (1992). The article discusses the series’ common visions of the past as characterised by a pleasing youthful naivety, opposed to an implied present of cynical superior knowledge. I argue that these series embody retro’s distinct ability to combine irony and fetishism in its recreation of the past, as befits an age in which historical consciousness is increasingly referred to the intimate sphere of the individual self and its uncertain relation to posterity. This article identifies a current retro trend represented by the television series This Is England 86 (2010), Deutschland 83 (2015) and 1992 (2015). If one were to give a name to this phenomenon it might be “nation-date television”, given these series’ promise to say something important about their chosen time and place within the format of the television serial drama. Their employment of retro belongs to their categorisation as quality television.
