Healey Willan Who is she that ascendeth?

Healey Willan was the great, revered Canadian composer who oversaw the music at ’s Church of St. Mary Magdalene for decades. In the 1930s he composed a series of groundbreaking motets on Marian themes showing his lyrical gift, audacious harmonies and penchant for long, exquisite melodies. These miniature masterworks are among his most beautiful, beloved and famous creations. This one has a text taken from the Antiphons of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which itself relies heavily on quotes from the Song of Solomon.

Who is she that ascendeth as the dawning of the morning, fair as the moon, resplendent as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners. I am come into my garden, my spouse, my sister. I sleep, but my heart waketh. It is the voice of my Beloved. Roman Catholic liturgy

John Beckwith Psalm 130 (Out of the Deep)

John Beckwith, celebrating his 90th birthday this year, is one of Canada’s most distinguished composers. Active in many different aspects of music, he was for many years Dean of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. A native of Victoria, , Beckwith has always had an enduring interest in Canadian musical heritage and has composed a large number of highly individual vocal works inspired by 19th-century musical life, Canadian folk songs and turn-of-the-century rural customs in . This Psalm 130 is one of six movements of Beckwith’s larger work, Harp of David, which found its genesis in his interest in early Canadian psalmody and hymnody, particularly during 1984-85 while he was editing an anthology of such hymns. Harp of David was premiered in 1986 by the Vancouver Chamber Choir and was recorded during the 1989-90 season for the Centrediscs CD Beckwith/Weisgarber. Psalm 130 is a substantial and significant work, full of challenge and musical subtlety for both performer and listener, yet replete with beautiful sonorities and evocations of Canada’s musical past. Using German, English and Latin versions of the text, it is based on the sturdy Lutheran chorale tune Aus tiefer Not of 1524, alternating and commingling with Beckwith’s own more contemporary melodies.

5 Harry Somers God, the master of this scene

Harry Somers was one of the finest and most important Canadian composers of the 20th century. Born and raised in Toronto, he studied with Reginald Godden and at the Conservatory and later in with . He composed in all forms of instrumental and vocal music, including an iconic Canadian opera, Louis Riel, for the centennial celebrations of 1967. An influential figure in the nation’s arts movement, he was one of the founders of the Canadian League of Composers and other important Canadian music organizations, including the for the Arts and the Canadian Music Centre. God, the master of this scene was composed in 1962 for the wedding of CBC producer John Roberts. It reflects the composer’s Parisian studies of Gregorian chant and demonstrates an ingenious way of combining that sort of traditional Thank you, melody with the most brilliant of modern harmonic styles.

6 R. Murray Schafer Narcissus and the Pool of Water

R. Murray Schafer is Canada’s most outstanding avant garde composer, much honoured for his lifetime achievement in music. As a composer he has written in all forms, including orchestral music, chamber music and large-scale music dramas, often intended for outdoor or wilderness performance. Choral musicians feel Schafer has made particularly important contributions to the development of new choral forms and language. His fondness for choral music dates from his youth when he was a choir boy. His long-standing association with the Vancouver Chamber Choir has yielded hundreds of performances, several new choral works and three full recordings of his collected choral compositions (A Garden of Bells, Once on a Windy Night and Imagining Incense). Tonight we are performing an excerpt – the final scene – from a larger workNarcissus and Echo, which was commissioned by our sister choir, the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus and their conductor, Chifuru Matsubara for performance in October of 2009. By chance, the Vancouver Chamber Choir was in Tokyo sharing a concert with the TPC the night of the premiere, though we were not able to participate in this work. We will be presenting the whole work for the first time next summer (2018) at a special 85th birthday event for Schafer. Tonight can be considered a preview. The mythological story ofNarcissus and Echo, sung in Latin, comes from Ovid’s Metamorphosis. The final scene, which we are calling Narcissus and the Pool of Water, is the familiar story of the young hunter, known for his beauty, who falls in love with his own image found in a pool of water and, mesmerized, falls to his own death. The chorus narrates the story, while Tiresias, the blind prophet of Apollo famous for his clairvoyance, adds insight through his commentary.

7 Matthew Emery Unto Young Eternity

Young Canadian composer Matthew Emery of London, Ontario, graduated from the University of British Columbia where he studied composition with Stephen Chatman. He is presently pursuing a doctorate at the University of Toronto. Emery has focused particularly on choral music and his many works have been performed frequently the last few years throughout Canada and the USA. Unto Young Eternity, written to honour his choral mentor Ken Fleet, won the American Choral Directors Association’s 2013 Brock Student Composition prize and received a premiere at the Northwestern ACDA conference in 2014. The piece starts in unison but then freely weaves in and out of diatonic and gently chromatic textures evoking a metaphorical “life path” suggested by Robert Herrick’s poem The White Island, or Place of the Blest.

Kathleen Allan Ave maris stella

Vancouver Chamber Choir alumna Kathleen Allan is continuing her career as conductor, composer and singer. She is the Director of Choral Studies and Associate Conductor of Orchestras at the Vancouver Academy of Music and was recently appointed Artistic Director of Canzona, ’s professional Baroque choral ensemble. She is the assistant conductor of the Vancouver Bach Choir, and has held conducting positions with St. Michael’s Choir School, the Yale Glee Club, the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus, and in 2013 was the Conducting Fellow of the Canadian Chamber Choir. She is the founding co-artistic director of Arkora, a chamber music collective dedicated to interdisciplinary performance. Her compositions have been commissioned, performed and recorded by ensembles throughout North America, Europe, and in Argentina where her work was featured at the World Symposium on Choral Music in 2011. Ave maris stella was commissioned in 2016 by the Redshift Music Society for the Vancouver Cantata Singers, who premiered it at the Vancouver Planetarium. David Archer Who has seen the wind?

David Archer is a BC composer and musician who now lives in Vancouver, where he is writing music for choir, orchestra, piano, chamber ensembles and short fi lms. An experienced choral musician, David has recently composed commissioned works for Vox Humana and Th e Linden Singers of Victoria, the Canadian Chamber Choir, Jubilate Vocal Ensemble, University of Concert Choir and Viva Youth Choirs. Augustus Stephen Vogt was a German-Canadian organist, choral Karel ten Hoope was a familiar figure on the BC musical scene for conductor, music educator, composer and author. He grew up in many years as the conductor of the Handel Society of Music in New Elmira, Ontario, where his father was an organ builder and he Westminster from 1966 until 1995. Also an organist, critic and himself was appointed organist at the local church as a teenager. From composer, he studied in Amsterdam and Utrecht before moving to 1881 to 1888, he studied first at the New England Conservatory of Canada in 1951. He was conductor of the Vancouver Bach Choir Music in Boston and then the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany. in the early 1960s and later became music director at Holy Rosary Returning to Canada, he became organist of the Jarvis Street Baptist Cathedral for nearly 20 years. Fr. Basil Foote Vidi civitatem sanctam

Fr. Basil Foote, OSB, is a member of Westminster Abbey’s religious community in Mission, BC and is the organist of the Abbey Church. His antiphon-motet is based on a text from Revelation (21:2) in which the holy city, the New Jerusalem, symbolizes the Church and the dwelling of God with his people. It was composed for the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s dedicatory concert in the new Abbey Church in 1982, and was premiered by the Choir on that occasion.

10 Peter R. Allen The Banks of Newfoundland

Peter R. Allen, who was born and educated in Wales, came to Canada in 1969. He has a Doctorate in Choral Conducting from the University of Iowa, has taught music at universities in four provinces and was active for many years as an adjudicator across Canada. Since 1987 he has been based in Ontario, but this arrangement of The Banks of Newfoundland from 1980 is one of several written around the time he spent teaching at Memorial University in Newfoundland.

11 Derek Healey Lisette

Derek Healey was born and educated in England and now resides in the United States. During the decade 1969-78, however, he lived and worked in Canada - first in Victoria, British Columbia, and later in Guelph, Ontario. During that time he composed a first set of six Canadian folksong settings which rapidly became, and remain, standard Canadian choral repertoire. The Vancouver Chamber Choir has sung those earlier songs many times both at home and abroad. Some 25 years later, Healey brought forth another set of Six Canadian Folk Songs. This song, from , rings the eternal folksong theme of love and loss.

Stephen Smith Land of the Silver Birch

Stephen Smith grew up in rural , where he sang and played the piano from an early age. After initial studies in his home province in both piano and organ, he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, winning numerous awards and distinctions. Since 1990 Stephen has lived in Vancouver, where he earned his doctoral degree in piano performance from the University of British Columbia as a student of Jane Coop. A chamber musician, teacher, conductor and accompanist, he currently works with five choirs on a weekly basis. Stephen’s choral arrangements and compositions have been performed and recorded from St. John’s to Seoul and performed in Carnegie Hall and on the CBC. Land of the Silver Birch is a time-honoured Canadian campfire song, arranged for the Vancouver choir EnChor. Smith admits that the original song is just a little banal, ripe for somewhat of a tongue-in-cheek approach. He even quotes the National Anthem O Canada and a veritable Romantic Anthem, Stanford’s The Bluebird... but the arrangement has its moments of special beauty, too.

12 Imant Raminsh Ave Maria

Imant Raminsh is a British Columbian composer who has come to international prominence in the years since the Vancouver Chamber Choir gave the first performance of his famousAve verum corpus in 1977. The Choir has commissioned and premiered many of his choral works, including this setting of the beloved Catholic prayer Ave Maria. The hallmarks of his style are lyrical melody and rich, sonorous harmony - both of which are amply displayed in this short work for alto solo and eight-part choir.

Stephen Chatman Due South

Stephen Chatman, Professor of Composition at the University of British Columbia, is one of Canada’s finest and most frequently performed composers. He has had a long association with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, which has recorded three CDs of his choral music in addition to commissioning and premiering several works. Due South is the most recent in a series of four choral suites (Due North, Due West, Due East and now Due South) which explore the cultural and natural wonders of various regions of North America. They are broad in scope, often using tone painting to evoke stunning landscapes and diverse communities. Commissioned by Morehead State University, tonight is the Canadian premiere of Due South. The texts are by Chatman’s frequent collaborator, Tara Wohlberg.
