Lotta shakin’at K-Rock azz station cd 101.9 has flipped to rock. Now, rumors are swirling that rock station WXRK- JFM might go country. Dismal ratings and word that the contract for morning hosts Opie and Anthony (right) will be up in April are spurring talk about the CBS Radio station known as K-Rock. Whoa, says a CBS Radio spokeswoman. “That rumor is older than I am.” Indeed, country music fans have been let down before. New York hasn’t had a country station since 1996 because corporate programmers believe the format can’t grab big ratings in this market. But industry insiders insist that some change is due at WXRK, which ranked 22nd in the fall Arbitron survey.“They’ve got to do something,” says Mark Lefkowitz, media director at Furman Roth Advertising. Maire Mason, K-Rock’s general manager, says that portable people meter ratings—which won’t be official until the fall and favor rock formats—show that the station increased its share of listeners among key male audiences in each of the past three months. “K-Rock has tremendous brand recognition in the market,” Ms. Mason says. “There are no plans to change the format.”

STEVE BERNSTEIN, 47, is ready for some Big Apple competition. The Brooklyn native, founder and president of Zenbu Media, has created the Battle for Manhattan, a two-week sports contest that he hopes will become an annual event. It starts March 30. LOST AND FOUND The idea came to him in 2005, when New York lost its bid to host the 2012 Olympics. For a $30 fee, Manhattan residents and workers 21 or over can participate in basketball, soccer and volleyball matches and in a 5K race. The competition, which will pit East Siders against West Siders, is about “bragging Mother’s milk rights,” Mr. Bernstein says. Working women pump it up to keep nursing WAR OF THE AGES He plans to join in the race and in some b-ball. But he will mostly be overseeing the games, which will be organized by age bracket and held at various high school gyms.Ten employees will assist him. UP NEXT For 2009, Mr. Bernstein envisions dodgeball, dance contests and even cook- offs. Other cities, including Chicago and London, have expressed interest in holding their own battles. “It’s not the Olympics, but it’s competitive and fun,” Mr. Bernstein says. —adrianne pasquarelli
