1 /10 (5.55/6) 3.3 Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt dead at 68 LONDON -- Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt has died in Spain at age 68.

His manager, Simon Porter, and Parfitt’s family said in a statement that Parfitt died in a hospital in Marbella, Spain, on Saturday from a severe infection.

“We are truly devastated to have to announce that Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt has passed away at lunchtime today,” the statement read, asking for privacy for the family and the band.

It said he had been looking forward to starting a solo career after he stopped touring with the band because of medical issues, including a heart attack he suffered earlier this year.

The statement said Parfitt had been hospitalized since Thursday due to complications from an earlier shoulder injury stemming from a fall.

The band’s website said Parfitt was known as “The Womorr,” which stands for “the wild old man of rock and roll.” He wrote some of Status Quo’s best known songs including “Whatever You Want” and “Backwater.”

The website said he had become “mild” over the years.

The band played together for decades. Parfitt was known for his slashing style, often played on his signature 1965 white Fender Telecaster or other similar models.

Parfitt divided his time between Spain and London.

Porter said Parfitt is survived by his wife Lyndsay and four children: Tommy, Lily, Harry and Rick Jr., who took to Twitter after his father’s death:

I cannot describe the sadness I feel right now. To many he was a rockstar, to me he was simply 'Dad', and I loved him hugely. 3 /10 (1.02/6) 0.0 Family stranded near Grand Canyon rescued Search crews have rescued a Pennsylvania family that got stranded Thursday on a snowy forest road in northern Arizona while trying to reach the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is closed for winter.

Searchers early Saturday morning located the mother who had walked approximately 26 miles in search of help before taking refuge in a seasonally closed Grand Canyon National Park guard shack, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said. Other searchers rescued the father and the couple’s 10-year-old son Friday afternoon after they hiked to an area where they found cellphone service to call for help, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Karen Klein was conscious and communicating when found but suffering from cold exposure, while Eric Klein and the couple’s son also are being treated for cold exposure, including frostbite, the statement said.

The family’s hometown wasn’t immediately available, and personnel at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah, where they were taken for treatment declined to put through a reporter’s call. Hospital spokeswoman Terri Draper did not immediately return a call for comment.

The family had rented a car in Las Vegas, about 170 miles west of the national park’s main facilities, and headed for the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, where the Arizona Department of Transportation seasonally closes the access highway each winter due to snowfall.

Heeding directions of their vehicle’s GPS system, the got stuck on a national forest road amid heavy snowfall, the sheriff’s statement said.

The statement said Karen Klein, who was wearing a parka and knit cap, then set off on the foot for help.

A Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and it was not immediately known whether there was anything in the closed guard shack that would have provided heat or other help.

5 /10 1.5 Ayla Brown, ex- American Idol contestant, appeals to Trump for inauguration singing gig Former American Idol contestant Ayla Brown asked Donald Trump this week to perform at his inauguration next month amid some of music’s biggest stars having reportedly refused to participate in events surrounding his swearing-in.

The daughter of former U. S. Sen. , Massachusetts Republican, the singer appealed to Mr. Trump during an interview with the Boston Herald this week where she said she’d be “honored to perform” at any of the president-elect’s inaugural events next month.

“As a performer, I see the opportunity to perform at any inauguration in history as the highest honor,” she told the newspaper. “It’s a shame that not everyone sees it that way.”

“We’ve already elected our president,” she added. “At this point, you’re singing for your country — not to elect a politician.”

Nonetheless, Ms. Brown ’s offer comes on the heels of reports that indicated some of pop music’s biggest names have outright refused to be involved in Mr. Trump ’s inauguration. Elton John, Garth Brooks and have each turned down offers from Mr. Trump , according to recent reports, and Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli was allegedly rejected by the president-elect after he provoked a firestorm among fans by initially agreeing to participate.

Ms. Brown received an invitation to attend Mr. Trump ’s inauguration, but hasn’t been invited to sing just yet, she told the Herald.

“I’m hoping that I’m on the list,” she said. “They know who I am and I’m hoping I’m in the mix.”

Indeed, the 28-year-old songstress has hardly been hidden from the GOP establishment during the course of her decade-long singing career. Ms. Brown sang “” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the Republican Party debate last December, and belted out the National Anthem during the Republican National Convention in July.

Her father, the former senator, endorsed Mr. Trump ’s White House bid last February, and was reportedly vying for a spot in the president-elect’s incoming administration as recently as last month. 2016-12-24 13:49 By www.washingtontimes.com

6 /10 2.1 Trio uses donkeys to drag stolen bakkie to Zim - through a river Cape Town - Suspected car thieves who were using donkeys to pull a stolen bakkie across the Limpopo River between South Africa and Zimbabwe deserted their loot when they were spotted in the middle of the river, police said on Saturday During aerial surveillance on Friday, provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba spotted the roof of the double cab bakkie in the middle of the Limpopo River, Saps spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe told News24.

"The chopper was instructed to swoop down and indeed, there was a vehicle on the South African side of the river, almost in the Zimbabwean section. The three suspects realised that they had been spotted and swam to Zimbabwe, where they disappeared into the bushes," he said.

The donkeys, which were left behind, were unharmed and wandered off.

It took police four hours to retrieve the vehicle from the river.

The bakkie is confirmed to have been stolen in Durban, Ngoepe said.

9 /10 0.0 Iowa doctor to pay $5,000 fine, refrain from surgery DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A former Cedar Rapids brain and spine surgeon who was accused of gross malpractice has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine and refrain from performing surgery.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/2hTLgDv ) that David Segal reached a settlement with the Iowa Board of Medicine. The board, which licenses physicians, filed administrative charges against him in 2015 alleging that he failed to prevent “excessive infections” among his patients and that he used an inappropriate technique to manage leaking spinal fluid after operations.

Segal’s lawyer, Guy Cook, says the doctor denies providing poor medical care but agreed to settle the case to avoid further legal costs. Cook says Segal voluntarily stopped performing surgeries in an abundance of caution because of health issues.

10 /10 2.1 Prime Minister says Britain has ‘much to celebrate’ in her Christmas message, but the Foreign Secretary says things are more ‘gloomy’ With the deaths of countless celebrities, the historic Brexit vote, Leicester City's staggering Premier League success and Donald Trump securing the US Presidency, 2016 is unlikely to be a year that is quickly forgotten. But, on balance, has it been a positive year or a disastrous one? It would appear to depend which senior Tory politician you ask. Prime Minister Theresa May gave an upbeat Christmas speech in which she vowed to unite the country after a year of divisions over the European Union and forge a ‘bold new role’ for the UK in the world. But Foreign Secretary Boris was quick to douse her flames of optimism, with a stark reminder of the atrocities in Syria and the various terror attacks that have taken place across Europe. In her first Christmas message as PM, Mrs May spoke about her personal faith and her upbringing as the daughter of a vicar. There had been much to celebrate in 2016, she says, with great opportunities to be seized after we leave the EU – as long as Britain is confident about the future. Her words will be seen as an attempt to address the splits between supporters and opponents of EU membership exposed by the June 23 vote, won by the Out campaign by a 52 to 48 per cent margin. She said: ‘Coming together is also important for us as a country. ‘As we leave the European Union we must seize a historic opportunity to forge a bold new role for ourselves in the world and to unite our country as we move forward into the future. ‘And, with our international partners, we must work together to promote trade, increase prosperity and face the challenges to peace and security around the world.’ Mrs May stressed that 2016 has seen much for Britain to celebrate, including the Queen’s 90th birthday and successes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. ‘As we gather with our friends and families at this time of year we proudly celebrate the birth of Christ and the message of forgiveness, love and hope that He brings,’ she said. ‘We also think of Christians in other parts of the world who face persecution this Christmas and reaffirm our determination to stand up for the freedom of people of all religions to practise their beliefs in peace and safety.’ The PM spoke about her own background as the daughter of a vicar. ‘Having grown up in a vicarage, I know how demanding it can be for those who have to work over the Christmas period,’ she said. ‘So it’s right for all of us to express our gratitude to those who will have to spend Christmas away from the people they love in looking after others: those in our health and care services, those who work with the vulnerable, as well as those who will be caring for a loved one. ‘And we thank those in our armed forces, security agencies and emergency services who work all year round to keep our country safe – especially those who will be separated by their duty from their families and friends.’ She concluded: ‘Wherever you are this Christmas, I wish you joy and peace in this season of celebration, along with health and happiness in the year ahead.’ However, Mr Johnson went down a different route, attempting to give 'hope' to people who may be feeling a little bit glum as we move into 2017. His message sounded somewhat apologetic, as he made a concerted effort to outline that the global issues aren't quite as bad as they seem. He said: 'We come now to the end of 2016, and I know that lots of people will be looking back at some of the gloomy bits about this year. 'We've still got a terrible civil war going on in Syria, we are seeing terrorist outrages taking place in our European continent. 'But I want you to know that British diplomats, British armed forces, British security services, British intelligence services are working the whole time to keep this country safe and to tackle those problems at source. He added: 'And in case any of you are feeling too downcast this Christmas, don't forget that overall the people on this planet are living longer, they're living in better health, they're better educated that ever before, particularly women. And I can tell you that global Britain is leading that effort. 'So, hope that cheers you up. Have a great Christmas and a happy 2017.' The Queen was said to have been ‘disappointed’ after Theresa May declined to share her Brexit plans when she stayed with her at Balmoral in September, The Times reported.
