ABSTRACT The Bollywood film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (hereinafter ‘ZNMD’), translated into Spanish as Solo se vive una vez, was a box office success in the summer of 2011 in India. Directed by the young filmmaker Zoya Akhtar and funded by Turespaña, ZNMD was conceived as a perfect marketing product at transnational level, in which Spain becomes the venue chosen by three young people who decide to celebrate the bachelor party of one of them, by visiting some touris- tic towns and villages of the country. The film raises interesting topics on the ascending upper middle class in India which seeks to harmonize a new consumerist way of life with a more tra- ditional lifestyle linked to their parent’s generation, and it is a clear example of an increasingly globalized cultural industry with more economic weight inside and outside India.

Shah Rukh Khan revealed back in February at the Berlinale film festival that he would like to shoot his next film in Berlin. After an intensive search for locations assisted by the Berlin Brandenburg Film Commission (bbfc), the producers of Excel Entertainment from India have now decided that the sequel of the action film “Don”, one of the most successful Indian blockbusters, should be shot in the German capital. Filming is scheduled to begin in the late autumn. The shooting of “Don 2” is expected to take place over 50 days at well-known locations around the city under the direction of Farhan Akhtar, with Berlin seeing off some fierce international competition. Burkhard Kieker, CEO of BTM said, “We have been promoting this idea for more than four years. It’s incredible that it will actually be realized now. This could be the breakthrough needed for making the Berlin destination known to the Indian market. It's exactly what we want.” René Gurka, Managing Director of Berlin Partner added, “A Bollywood blockbuster set in Berlin will offer a tremendous boost in terms of the image of our city in India as a place in which to live and work and, in particular, it will open up new opportunities in Asia for the Berlin media industry.” Managing Director of Medienboard, Kirsten Niehuus said, “After Til Schweiger, Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz, we are very much looking forward to welcoming Shah Rukh Khan to Berlin on the set of his new film in the late autumn.

In broader terms, this lecture course also furnishes an introduction to the culture and history of modern Hindi-language cinema, the study of modern Indian history, some of the broader theoretical literature on nationalism and patriotism, and the study of popular culture. The use of films and visual material in the study of history has become increasingly popular over the course of the last three decades; however, this course does not view cinema merely an as instrument for the study of Indian history. Popular cinema, this lecture presumes, is an intrinsically interesting subject of inquiry, even if Indian scholars have come to this realization long after the Indian public had already declared its unmitigated affection for the movies.
