Tutku DİLAVER Analyst Blog No: 49 06.10.2017 Tuku Dilaver * AVIM Trainee Negotiations on the renewal of Partnership Agreement between Azerbaijan and European Union (EU) which has been in force since 1991, has started in March 2017. After the meeting in Brussels in June, the parties stated that they hoped to finalize the draft of the Agreement until the end of year and meetings would continue intensively.[1] It is understood from the statements made by the delegates of both parties, that the relations are desired to be based on a solid foundation, leaving disagreements on human rights issues and Azerbaijans territorial integrity issue aside. After the meeting in Brussels on July 20th, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Belgium and Head of the Mission to the EU, Fuad Isgandrov indicated that Azerbaijan started to maintain relations with EU via more pragmatic objectives and the projects like Southern Gas Corridor might be a ground for attaining this goal. It will be recalled that European Union attempted to sign the Partnership Agreement with Azerbaijan on 2010, 2013 and 2015 but it didn't get any results from that attempts. In Azerbaijan public opinion, the belief in the EU was shaken especially on the matters of Azerbaijans territorial sovereignty and integrity because no concrete steps were taken by EU.[3] The year of 2015 during which the tension in relations increased, can be evaluated as a turning point for Azerbaijans expectations.

The Azerbaijani Embassy to the United Kingdom has sent a letter to UK Foreign Office on media reports concerning information about meetings separatists of Nagorno-Karabakh held in the parliament of this country. The embassy has sent a letter to British Foreign Office, expressing concern on the participation of separatists at the meeting of Armenia-Britain friendship group. The UK Foreign Ministry responded in its letter that UK`s position remains unchanged as it supports Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. The letter says that the parliamentary group is a non-formal group of interests and does not reflect the official position of the British government and parliament. “It means that the Armenian media again distorts the facts. Their information is just a provocation” said the press secretary of Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Elman Abdullayev. The Azerbaijani Embassy to the UK informed that participation of Nagorno-Karabakh separatists in the meeting of Armenia-UK friendship group was a personal initiative of baroness Caroline Cocks. Some of Armenian media spread information about visit of “delegation” of Nagorno-Karabakh separatists to London on June 13. The delegation held meetings in the House of Lords, participated in the annual meeting of Armenia-UK friendship group. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry tasked the Embassy with investigating into the case. Azerbaijan's GDP grew by 0.7% June 16 (AzerTAc). During the first last five months of 2012, gross domestic product in Azerbaijan increased over the same period last year by 0.7%.
