The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging www.doubletoe.com 5 The World of Clogging Workshop and Championships by Barbara Elko A quarter of a century old this year, the World of Clogging workshop/competition continues to entice cloggers to spend their USA Memorial Holiday Weekend dancing. This long running workshop has had several locations over the years since its start in Columbus, Ohio. Currently the Cincinnati Airport Marriott is home, a very accommodating location. The longevity of this workshop is evidence that this one is special. A successful workshop constantly evolves taking on its own personality. These distinctions often determine the degree of fun for the attendees, thus building an allegiance to that particular workshop. Like myself, many dancers return to the World of Clogging year after year, cause this one is more fun than a barrel of monkeys! Beginning at the Ramada Inn in Columbus, Ohio in the early 1990’s, the event (then called the Memorial Day Clogging Spectacular) was a partnership of instructors Tandy Barrett, Charlie Burns, Jeff Driggs, Sallie James and Steve Smith. Last year Hanna Healy and Jeff Driggs, the hosts of the current event (now known as the World of Clogging), tried a unique idea. They held an instructors lottery. Twelve lucky instructors were selected and given a fifty minute teaching slot. The lottery was an ingenious idea! The results were favorable so Hanna and Jeff decided to have a lottery again this year. Six of the lottery winners from last year were invited back to teach. Those lucky teachers who were given the chance to return were Donna Aberman of Florida, Billie Jo Burnette of Tennessee, Barb Elko of Pennsylvania, Chris Phelps from Michigan, Naomi Zweben King from Ohio, and Bekka Gunner from New York. The six remaining teaching slots were offered in a lottery again and included Christy Corwin Howard from Indiana, Jason Pflugh from Ohio, Tina Curtis from Canada, Jared Pullum from Kentucky, Brian Dion from Ohio, and Colleen Zurbrigg from Canada. I was one of the six instructors invited back to teach, and trust me it was an invitation that did not take long to RSVP. I think for the returning six instructors this year was even more

One of his routines was to a song called “Hula Hoop”. A great routine, but Nathan’s skills at using a hula hoop were not as good as his clogging skills! By the end of the weekend, with proper instruction, on hip movement Nathan can now keep the hula hoop circling…for a bit! Most cloggers are familiar with instructor Sherry Cox, she is fabulous. Sherry was a fixture of the Memorial Day workshop in its early years, but she took a break to start a family. Now, Sherry and her twelve year old son Gavin, were part of the teaching staff this year. Gavin is amazing, poise well beyond his years, unbelievably skilled, and absolutely charming. This young man is so talented he actually has a job clogging! He performs in the popular Hatfield and McCoy show in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. If you are in the area see the show it is great family entertainment! Four words coincide with instructor Trevor DeWitt… country, bluegrass, speed, and laughter. Thank goodness his country routine to “Never Had To Go” was an easy intermediate one because the speed was insane, tons of fun! Judy Waymouth is an outstanding, unpretentious, instructor from Canada. In recognition of all her contributions to dancing, she has received several awards through the years, including an honor at last year’s World of Clogging and this year’s Nickel City Clogging Festival. Attendees had the opportunity to take an advanced Step Dancing class with her. She also presented an intermediate and a beginner pop routine. Kentucky instructor Morgan Hudson has to have legs made of rubber. I still cannot figure out how his legs bend in so many different directions seemingly at the same time. Dancers

Jeff Driggs once again had a room full of dancers working feverishly to master steps while doing a variety of hand movements. How does he come up with this stuff? His new routine to “Can’t Stop The Feeling” was gut busting. Sister duo from Kentucky Kaylee and Lauren Thomas led a duo/duet class. These talented sisters have been duo/duet champions many times over. Jamie Vincent, the director of the competition team Taps in Motion, held an instructor’s forum that gave teachers a chance to ask questions and learn from Jamie, who runs a large studio program with all levels. Jamie also teaches a special class for those with disabilities and some of the dancers were able to attend the weekend’s competition and put on a show that brought the audience to its feet. Kelly and Kenny Fithen are directors of the two time national champion clogging group Stole Power. The husband and wife team offered an advanced steps class. Many of you may recognize Kenny from his stint as an original member of ALL THAT. Other members of the ALL THAT ensemble were on hand as well, along with dancers from four-time national champion clogging team TAP THIS! from Nebraska. Needless to say, there was plenty of clogging to be learned from this all star staff. The evening fun dances were great! Bunches of cloggers doing what they do best, laughing on the dance floor. Good fun dances that keep the floor full and moving take a special talent, and the World of Clogging event is one of those events that know how to run a fun dance. Not only are there workshops, but the event includes a competition. Competition started Saturday evening and ran for two hours prior to the start of the fun dance. This gave everyone the opportunity to watch some outstanding dancing. The routines, costumes, and dancers energy were boundless. The bulk of the competition resumed Sunday morning. Saturday night was really special! Hanna planned a surprise tribute to honor Jeff Driggs. (I will fill you all in on the details in a separate article.) Sunday’s competition bring a whole different group of people to the venue, as families and dancers filled the theatre style ballroom for a full day of contests in team, solo and duo categories. Dancers from seven states and Australia joined in the day’s championships and took home more than High school seniors at the $5,000.00 in trophies and awards. Jeff Driggs beyond a shadow of a doubt is currently the powerful, yet gentle leader of our clog dynasty. He has protected the knowledge and skills passed on from previous generations of leaders, yet he continues to grow with the ever changing styles of clog dancing. His amiable method of teaching promotes laughter, as dancers attempt to master his routines, some which include steps combined with hand movements. Jeff’s love of dance is superseded only by his love for mankind. Hanna Healy, Jeff’s partner in the Memorial Day World of Clogging event and president of the Western New York Clogging Association, decided it was time we express our gratitude to a guy we all love and respect. She organized a tribute to Jeff to be held during the weekend’s program. Hanna’s “Mission Impossible” was keeping the tribute a surprise, seeing as Jeff being a humble person would never agree to such a tribute. Planning the tribute in the midst of all of the activities of the events was not an easy feat! As would any great leader, Jeff knows all that is occurring in the clog dynasty. Poor Hanna! There were so many individuals and groups involved, speakers and demos to arrange, social media to be contained, the hotel staff had to be hushed, etc. Only Hanna would attempt a surprise of this magnitude, and make it happen! Naomi Pyle had her own mission. She needed to get the inflatable fat suits from Jeff that they and fellow instructors Scotty Bilz, Chip Summey and Barry Welch used to do a comical exhibition at the Fontana Jamboree in honor of ALL THAT. Calling themselves ALL FAT! they performed to the Backstreet Boys “Larger Than Life.” The YouTube posting of the routine caught the eye of America’s Got Talent, who invited them to Nashville, Tennessee to audition for the show. Naomi told Jeff she wanted to borrow the suits for a routine her group would be doing at their fair. She said the fat suits would send the routine Photo: Top: Barb Elko joined in the tribute to Jeff Driggs over the top. She responded “How much time have you got?” It is impossible to sum up Jeff Driggs, but I wanted to share a bit of the tribute to an amazing man! To condense his thoughts, Florida instructor Matt Koziuk used the noun “inspiration.” Jeff is a person who causes stimulation and excitement of the mind and or feelings. He pushes one to want to be creative, active, and to do great things. “We are all just a little bit better off to have had Driggs in our lives.” Paul Melville added to the tribute, saying “If Bill Nichols is the grandfather of clogging, then Jeff must be the father of clogging.” A tearful, Judy Waymouth, who has know Jeff since 1985, began by saying what a wonderful mentor Jeff has been to her two sons. “I honestly cannot think of another person that has given more to this dance form.” Nathan Ballard from Australia met Jeff in 2004. He frequently reaches out to Jeff for advice. The experience of traveling to Europe last year with Jeff
