82. B Achfest 2 0 . bis 3 0 . September Programm 8der2 Neuen. INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material subm itted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame 3. When a map, dravdng or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again-beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.

BACH 2000 will be launched at the Salzburg Festival on 28 July 1999 and be available from the very beginning of celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the composer's death in 1750. The title BACH 2000 is a protected trademark. BACH 2000 - A Summary Teldec's BACH 2000 Edition, 153 CDs in 12 volumes comprising Bach's complete works performed by world renowned Bach interpreters on period instruments, constitutes one of the most ambitious projects in recording history. BACH 2000 represents the culmination of a process that began four decades ago in 1958 with the creation of the DAS ALTE WERK label. After initially triggering an impassioned controversy, Nikolaus Harnoncourt's belief that "Early music is a foreign language which must be learned by musicians and listeners alike" has found widespread acceptance. He and his colleagues searched for original instruments to throw new light on composers and their works and significantly influenced the history of music interpretation in the second half of this century.

Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 By Leon Chisholm A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Kate van Orden, Co-Chair Professor James Q. Davies, Co-Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Massimo Mazzotti Summer 2015 Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 Copyright 2015 by Leon Chisholm Abstract Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 by Leon Chisholm Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Kate van Orden, Co-Chair Professor James Q. Davies, Co-Chair Keyboard instruments are ubiquitous in the history of European music. Despite the centrality of keyboards to everyday music making, their influence over the ways in which musicians have conceptualized music and, consequently, the music that they have created has received little attention. This dissertation explores how keyboard playing fits into revolutionary developments in music around 1600 – a period which roughly coincided with the emergence of the keyboard as the multipurpose instrument that has served musicians ever since. During the sixteenth century, keyboard playing became an increasingly common mode of experiencing polyphonic music, challenging the longstanding status of ensemble singing as the paradigmatic vehicle for the art of counterpoint – and ultimately replacing it in the eighteenth century. The competing paradigms differed radically: whereas ensemble singing comprised a group of musicians using their bodies as instruments, keyboard playing involved a lone musician operating a machine with her hands.

  • Music by Handel, Purcell, Corelli & Muffat
Belsize Baroque Director: Persephone Gibbs Soprano: Nia Coleman Music by Handel, Purcell, Corelli & Mufat Sunday 27 November 2016, 6.30 pm St Peter’s, Belsize Square, Belsize Park, London NW3 4HY Programme George Friderick Handel (1685–1759) Concerto Grosso in B flat Op.3 No.1 HWV 312 Allegro – Largo – Allegro The Concerti Grossi Opus 3, drawing together pre-existing works by Handel, were published by the less than scrupulous London publisher John Walsh in 1734. A rival composer, Geminiani, had just taken Walsh to court for printing two sets of his Concerti which he claimed Walsh had acquired illegally. While there is no evidence that Handel objected to Walsh’s selection of his works as Opus 3, it looks as if he did not have a chance to edit them pre-publication; it is for instance odd that the last movement of this B flat concerto is in G Minor. The opening movement has solos for the oboes and a violin, the slow movement adds recorders over an orchestral texture with divided violas, and the final movement features bassoons towards the end: all giving London’s best instrumentalists a chance to shine. George Friderick Handel Two arias from the opera Rinaldo, HWV 7 ‘Augelletti, che cantate’ – ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’ Rinaldo is the first Italian opera Handel composed for London, opening in the Haymarket in February 1711. These two arias are sung by Almirena, the daughter of Godfrey of Bouillon, who is capturing the city of Jerusalem from the infidel during the First Crusade (1096–99). Almirena, a character unknown to Torquato Tasso, from whose epic the plot of the opera is drawn, has been introduced into the plot by the librettist to provide a love interest.

Conflict between the Catholics and Protestants created an unstable social environment, which resulted in a myriad of responses from composers and performers. Leading composers including Heinrich Schütz, Michael Praetorius, Thomas Selle, and Heinrich Scheidemann, expressed their values either overtly or implicitly depending upon their occupational, geographical, political, and religious positions. Research indicates that the influences of the Thirty Years’ War created an ideal environment for the flourishing of the following German music in the late Baroque Era.

  • Juilliard415 Program Notes
PROGRAM NOTES Te orchestra as we know it was an invention of the Baroque. Te sheer spectacle of a large group of instrumentalists doing exactly the same thing at the same time was something very new in the late 17th century and a much commented-on aesthetic creation. And it went with a founding myth: that the orchestra was invented at about the same time in two different cities, Paris and Rome. Our program tonight examines these two cultures, and the diffusion of the17-century orchestra beyond France and Italy to England and Germany. Our two crucial figures are Arcangelo Corelli in Rome and Jean-Baptiste Lully in Paris: their influence spread far and wide throughout Europe. We begin our program in Rome with George Frideric Handel, who arrived there as a staggeringly gifed twenty-one-year- old in 1706. One of the first large projects he created during his relatively short time in Rome was the oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, which was probably performed at the magnificent palazzo of Cardinal Pamphilij. Although we don’t know for sure, it’s likely that Corelli would have provided the orchestra, and played first violin. Corelli’s finely-honed band of colleagues must have been a revelation to Handel. He asks great things of them: the solo violins have risky ascents to high A (according to Corelli’s protégé Geminiani, literally the end of the fingerboard) while the principal cello and oboes make their own virtuosic contributions, all set in a brilliant overture whose theme derives from one of Corelli’s own fugues.
