Vol. 13 No. 5 Jun 2016 Message from Chairman Dear Members, Season’s Greetings Students will be excited to take up engineering courses at various engineering colleges. I am sure the rat race would lead the students somewhere. While every parent wants his/her son/daughter to become an engineer or doctor, let us look at the alternates available. There are areas such as bio technology, agriculture, finance and accounting, architecture, tourism, hotel management, shipping related, fashion related, pharmacy, journalism, horticulture, mass communication etc. to name a few. Let me touch upon some of them to give an impetus for students to think. While agriculture in the country has grown leaps and bounds, we are faced with pesticides residues which are chemically toxic for humans. Effects of many of these on long term basis on humans are not studied. Organic farming is an emerging area which is coming up. Usage of bio fertilizers which can be generated from bio waste is an area which has lot of potential. Similarly use of bio pesticides which are harmless to humans is another area of interest. Studying in general on agriculture and specialising in these areas will be beneficial in the long run. Another area is marine or shipping. There are two different branches in shipping. One is the engineering one where in engineers are employed to take care of the various machineries on board. They start from 5th engineer to 4th, 3rd, 2nd and the Chief engineer. However these require engineering qualifications and hence are not the topic of our discussion. The other branch takes care of the ship management basically. As we all know, the Captain or “Master” as he is called is the real head of everything in a ship. He is all powerful on board. Below him is the chief officer, who takes care of the loading of cargo, other operations etc. further down are 2nd officer, 3rd. officer etc. In order to become a Captain, one has to take up marine related courses, being taught by Indian Maritime University (IMU) and many private institutions. It is however expensive though. Those passing out join as cadets initially and they have to pass qualifying exams during their career to get higher positions and finally become Captain. This is one of the maximum paying jobs and a responsible one too. Family life will be affected as sailing will be continuously for many months before returning home. However, seniors can take their spouse and children too in the ship. I am sure one can identify many such areas and not go after the rat race of engineering and medicine alone. I wish all aspiring students and parents to ponder on the job prospects and the future before taking up engineering courses. IEEE is contemplating to assist sends to make them employable after their graduation through specific programs. We will be announcing these in due course. Wish you all the best Till next time, Yours voluntarily M A Atmanand Chairman, IEEE Madras Section IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 13 No.5 Jun 2016 Page 1 Message from the Editors Prashant R Nair H.R. Mohan Editor Chief Editor [email protected] [email protected] Dear Readers, Welcome to the 4th issue of IEEE MAS LINK for the year 2016. Most colleges and universities are into examinations and/or vacation mode. Understandably, there is a dip in professional activities. Nonetheless, SBs and SB members can use this hiatus to embark on gainful internships and projects of societal and humanitarian relevance true to the IEEE vision of leveraging technology for humanity. This month issue of MAS LINK features activity reports from 11 SBs and seven Society Chapters. The reach and visibility of the MAS LINK is tremendous and we request all SBCs to make use this of avenue and voice of the Madras Section. Reporting in LINK is incentivized with rebates, grants, incentives and awards from the Madras section and therefore we request that all SBs to report their activities and achievements. In order to release the newsletter by middle of the month, we are continuing with the practice of not considering events reported after 8th. All SBCs are requested to make a note and submit the reports as per the guidelines available at http://ieeecs-madras.managedbiz.com/link-web/report-to-maslink-submission- guidelines.pdf This issue has exciting snippets on solar thermal plant (contributed by a student member) in addition to our popular ready-reckoner, Information Resources. Also, you may find three inspiring stories. In the Announcements section, there are exciting opportunities listed such as IEEE in 2030 Challenge, Foundation Grants, free e-books, medical insurance and entrepreneurship mentoring. The forthcoming events section has information on much-awaited and sought-after events such as TENCON, INDICON. ADCOM, Women in STEM etc. In this issue, we highlight the various technology initiatives and projects led by SIGHT to support the fishing community in Tamil Nadu. These activities of the IEEE Madras Section find resonance with the vision of our Honorable IEEE President, Barry Shoop for IEEE to focus on humanitarian work and "provide technologies that people can understand and maintain by themselves". One example of this is IEEE Smart Village, in which IEEE members are training local entrepreneurs in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Sudan to set up micro-utilities using solar panels to power homes, businesses, and schools. We congratulate the winners of the MAS LINK READER QUIZ-1605 Mr. Arun Srivastava, Professional Member, Leeyo, Sivakasi and Dr. S. Sakthivel, Professional Member, Anna University, Chennai. Both will get Amazon Gift Coupon of value Rs. 500/- each. The prizes are sponsored by IEEE Communications Society Madras Chapter. As the response for the MAS LINK READERS QUIZ is dwindling, we regret to inform that this item is being discontinued from this issue. We look forward contributions from our members to make MAS LINK more informative and appealing.
