Caring For Tigers

What do all tigers need to keep them happy and healthy? 1. Food - meat (given in an interesting way - enrichment)

2. Fresh water to drink

3. Shelter from the weather and a place to sleep

4. Medical care from the vets and daily care from the keepers

5. Toys - known as ‘enrichment’ - like a boomer ball

A Tiger enclosure needs these things:

 Shelter outdoors, from all types of weather (sun, wind, rain, etc)  A warm bed indoors (provide an indoor den as well as a shelter outside)  Trees to give shade  Long grass to hide in  A pond with fresh water  Toys to play with for enrichment, like balls, herbs and sacks  A feeding pole (to put the meat up high, so that the tigers have to jump and climb to get at it) and some meat  A door for keepers to get in to clean and provide food  Lots of windows for the visitors to look through  Safety barriers to keep the tigers safely inside and people safely outside the enclosure  What else could you add? Be creative  Think about the size of the enclosure, add a scale and draw in your tigers. Only two tigers can live together at a time, a male and a female.

The Tiger Territory exhibit opens in Spring 2013. Come and visit us at ZSL London Zoo soon. The Tiger Conservation HQ - Tiger Territory

The Tiger Conservation HQ will contribute to Sumatran tiger conservation in four ways; preserving genetic diversity, information gathering, educating and informing the general public, and fund-raising.

The exhibit will create a magical and challenging experience that that is all about close-up animal encounters in an authentic environment. It will educate visitors with compelling stories about the Sumatran tiger. It will explain the harsh reality of how close it is to extinction, and how ZSL and our Zoo visitors can ensure that this majestic species is conserved for future generations.

The new enclosure will total over 2,400m2, making it over five times bigger than the current tiger enclosure at ZSL London Zoo.

Essentially, the Tiger Conservation HQ will help tiger conservation efforts by supporting the aims of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for tigers which are as follows:

Preserving genetic diversity over time

Zoo tiger populations serve as a 'genetic reservoir’ in case of future need to supplement wild tiger populations or reintroduce tigers to areas from which they have vanished. We want to create the right environment to introduce a pair of breeding tigers so that we may increase the number of Sumatran tigers in the EEP programme.

Information gathering

Zoo tiger populations have made great contributions towards understanding many aspects of tiger biology and management. Veterinary care is an obvious area; without knowledge on how to safely anaesthetise tigers, radio- tracking studies in the wild would not be possible.

We want to continue our support for conservation in the wild with a pair of breeding Sumatran tigers.

Educating and informing

Seven hundred million people a year visit zoos worldwide - more than go to football matches - and every zoo with tigers has a responsibility to ensure the public learn about the factors endangering them and are encouraged to help. This will be a major role of the new facility at ZSL London Zoo with its 1 million visitors every year. We hope to create an inspiring and educational experience that garners the support for tigers in the wild using static and live interpretation.

Fundraising

The tiger EEP encourages all its participants to raise funds for tigers. Through our coordinated fundraising work ZSL has enabled the world’s zoos to donate to tiger conservation in the wild. Now ZSL is asking its supporters and the general public to get behind its Tiger SOS campaign to give tigers a future.
