LA REVISTA ELECTRÓNICA Número 72 – mayo 2017 Editorial Why I Sing The Blues? -¿Por qué canto el blues?- Edgard Octavio Espinosa Cabrera La vida sin música sería un error Friedrich Nietzsche El sol cayendo a plomo, la fatiga agobia, alguien canta un verso y otros esclavos le contestan; el dolor, la pena y el cansancio poco a poco se hacen soportables. Un formato humilde: tres acordes, seis notas, doce compases de cuatro cuartos. Percusiones y voces en el inicio, poco a poco incorporan instrumentos hechos rudimentariamente (guitarras hechas con cajas de puros), baratos (kazoos, armónicas), o improvisados (botellones, tablas de lavar, cucharas, tinas, alambres); el fin es rescatar su cultura africana y generar una propia en el lugar, pero este género es música de negros, del diablo, seductora, peligrosa. Billie Holliday Paulatinamente se incorporan instrumentos más formales, la tecnología impulsó el gran salto a nuevas formas y sonidos, las letras son más sofisticadas, contestatarias o de franca rebeldía, dan testimonio del persistente drama, tocar Blues es ser doblemente estigmatizado, pobre, segregado, alcoholizado, triste, solo; es ser prostituta, paria o preso. LA REVISTA ELECTRÓNICA Página | 3 The Blues had a baby and they named Rock and Roll Muddy Waters Con tantas cosas en contra, tanta tristeza e injusticia, el Blues, como el loto en las aguas putrefactas, floreció como el género que más ha influido en la música popular del siglo XX y lo que le sigue, rock and roll, soul, hip hop, jazz, zydeko, pop, música sinfónica, country, blue grass e innumerables etcéteras. Cada género es una propuesta estética que contiene a su propio público y tienen su propia evolución, el mismo Blues ha sido enriquecido con las aportaciones de otras culturas y países (Inglaterra, Alemania, Irlanda, España, Japón, México, Brasil, Argentina), pero todas ellas con la mente y el corazón invariablemente orientados hacia el Delta del Mississippi. King El tercer elemento es el surgimiento de la emotividad que el Blues produce en el ejecutante y en el escucha, estados de ánimo intensos que van desde lo más dramático hasta lo más eufórico, ritmo que contagia vida, letras llenas de vivencias y amor, invocan lo mejor de cada uno de nosotros, al escucharlo inevitablemente nos balanceamos, brincamos, bailamos, cantamos y hasta lloramos. Que ¿Por qué canto el Blues?... ¡Porque gozo el Blues! Para este mes de mayo, tiempo de contrastes. Por una parte, la alegría en la familia de Cultura Blues por un año más de publicaciones; pero por otro, la tristeza por el aplazamiento del Groove & Blues Guadalajara, hasta el próximo mes de noviembre. El sueño de blues tendrá que esperar. El número especial de aniversario, abre el Editorial con una interesante reflexión de Octavio Espinosa: Why I Sing The Blues?, dando la pauta en relación a los objetivos y razones de nuestra revista. A continuación, tres entrevistas aderezan la edición: Thomas Ruf, fundador de Ruf Records, Raúl De la Rosa, voz de Por los Senderos del Blues, y Alejandro Pascual, integrante de Estación Monrovia; éstas, en las columnas Planeta Blues y Huella Azul. El rock, el jazz y, por supuesto el blues, ocupan respectivamente su apreciado lugar en estas páginas con Javier Bátiz (Cuando mires las barbas del Brujo cortar) en Especial de Medianoche; con Ella Fitzgerald (Ella Fitzgerald: 100 años de la Primera Dama de la canción) en Sesiones desde la Cabina; y con Robert Johnson (Robert Johnson, más que una leyenda) en Lado B. Los testimonios gráficos de lo que sigue sucediendo alrededor de algunos resquicios de la escena nacional están en Cultura Blues de Visita: en Casa de Cultura Iztaccíhuatl, celebrando el 6º Aniversario de nuestra revista; en el Centro Cultural José Martí con la segunda y última parte del festival Las Damas del Blues; y en El 61 con: A Love Electric, La HH Botellita de Jeréz y El Perro Andablues. Hoy tenemos a ese respecto en una Colaboración Especial, las grabaciones autogestivas de Jimmy Huerta con su “Perro Rabioso”. En De Colección, la reseña de dos vinyles, uno de puro rock and roll (de Elvis Presley), y otro bien llenito de Chicago blues (Howlin’ Wolf). En cuánto a películas de En Video, están: 3 films del ‘Club de los 27’: Janis, Jimi y Jim. Y desde luego, la lista de 28 discos (con la ilustración de sus portadas), de reciente publicación; en el Suplemento. Una mención en especial para las décimas de Frino, en Cortando Rábanos, poniendo en su justo momento el punto sobre las íes; o bien, levantando la voz por muchos de nostros. LA REVISTA ELECTRÓNICA Número 72 – mayo 2017 Planeta Blues Thomas Ruf, el Blues contra el blues Michael Limnios Thomas Ruf dio sus primeros pasos en la industria de la música como promotor de giras europeas a finales de 1980. Fundó Ruf Records en 1994 para el gran Luther Allison (1939-1997). Luther, vivia en París, Francia en ese momento y necesitaba de un sello y editor de música. El lema de la disquera es Where Blues Crosses Over (Por Donde Cruza el Blues). La oficina de la empresa se encuentra en Lindewerra, Alemania. Desde 2008, Ruf produjo 120 lanzamientos, vendió más de 1 millón de álbumes, recibió dos nominaciones al Grammy y diez nominaciones de los Blues Music Awards. Su catálogo de artistas antiguos y presentes incluyen al propio Luther Allison, a su hijo Bernard Allison, Louisiana Red, Eric Bibb, Canned Heat, Kevin Coyne, Sue Foley, Larry Garner, Michael Hill's Blues Mob, Candye Kane, Omar & The Howlers, Aynsley Lister, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Dani Wilde, Oli Brown, Ana Popovic, Spooky Tooth y Walter Trout. Desde 2005, Ruf Records también promueve una gira anual de paquetes llamada "Bluescaravan". En 2007 Ruf Records recibió el premio "Keeping the Blues Alive" de la Blues Foundation.
