HIGH SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

JANUARY 2013 NEWSLETTER

SHSAA EXECUTIVE Executive Director’s Report 2012-2013 Welcome back to school after a well deserved break over the Christmas holidays. The SHSAA PRESIDENT: Executive along with the office staff hope that all of you had the opportunity to spend quality Roger Morgan time with family and loved ones over the holiday break. The Association wishes to thank each and every one of the schools including the administration, coaches, officials, staff advisors and

parent volunteers for providing the opportunities of school sport in your building. We could

not provide these opportunities without the cooperation and volunteer hours that your EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: communities provided. Val Gordon, Eastend This time of year also allows me to remind all coaches that are involved in modelling the Jody Kerr, Weyburn school sport philosophy, that consideration must be given to teams that are not at the level that their opposition is at. You are not modelling the values of sportsmanship to your players, Cory Schmaltz, Carrot River nor considerate of your opposition when scores become ridiculously one-sided. Those that run up scores or continue to pressure opposition when the result is well in hand, have Kelly Schneider, Medstead absolutely zero gain in either season results, seeding for conference play, placement in top Barclay Patterson, ten rankings for interest or more importantly the respect from not only your opposition but also your own student-athletes. Dale Reed, Regina This newsletter provides notice to all schools of the change in the Transfer Policy that was Kerri Archibald, Humboldt approved at the 2012 AGM and redefined as a result of a Board of Review in early fall. This is notice that students in Grade 9 and 10 will be subject to the new policy. This policy states that Miles Bennett, Rosetown once students have enrolled in their Grade 10 school of choice, they are eligible for SHSAA sanctioned inter-school sport at that school and only that school. Should a Grade 10 student Bob Simpson, Melville transfer next year (their Grade 11 year), they are only eligible at their Grade 11 school for the activities they did not participate in at their Grade 10 school. Students are free to transfer Kyle McIntyre, Chinook SD schools during their high school career, however their athletic eligibility is established at the school they enter Grade 10. This year's Grade 11 students will be governed by the old transfer

policy that states a student is only allowed one transfer within their three-year eligibility EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: period. If a Grade 11 student has transferred already to their school of choice this year but Kevin Vollet chooses to transfer for their Grade 12 year, they will be ineligible in the SHSAA activities they have participated this year.

ASSISTANT The classification system for the 2013-2014 school year will be based on the Gr. 9-11 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: enrolment of the current school year as was approved at the 2009 AGM. As such, there have been four championships for the fall of the 2013-2014 that have come open. The four Lyle McKellar championships that are now open and will require written bids to be submitted to the SHSAA Executive Council are Sand Golf, 4A Girls , 3A Boys Volleyball and 4A Boys Volleyball. EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT: These written bids will be due on or before April 12th, 2013. Please refer to the SHSAA Jessica Blair Handbook (pg. 68) for the criteria required in a written bid. The Executive will select the host site of these championships at their April meeting. Stefanie Lewis The SHSAA bids a fond farewell to Mr. Larry Pavloff. The SSBA Executive for whom Larry SHSAA OFFICE represented the past four years, requires Mr. Pavloff's expertise in other areas, thus requiring #1 - 575 Park Street him to relinquish this position to another worthy representative to the Executive Council. The SHSAA welcomes Mr. Bob Simpson to the SSBA vacancy. Bob is also a former educator as was REGINA SK S4N 5B2 Larry, and his expertise in the area of school sport is welcomed to the Board. Thank you Larry Tel: (306) 721-2151 for your dedication to the student athletes of Saskatchewan and we know you are not far Fax: (306) 721-2659 away should the Association require some expert advice. E-Mail: [email protected] A reminder to post tournament results to the message board if you host an invitational Web Site: www.shsaa.ca tournament. In addition, the bi-seasonal ranking of teams will again be conducted this season. Thank you to those who have volunteered to serve on the committees. SHSAA PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS MARCH 1 – 2, 2013 The provincial championship will be held March 1 – 2, 2013 and will consist of 8 teams in a triple knock-out format leading to four qualifiers taking part in a championship round to determine the medallists. The eight teams participating at the provincial championships will include the host school and seven other teams that have qualified through the regional championships.

Regional championships will be held February 15 – 16, 2013. The Regional championships will consist of a six or eight team double knock-out format leading to an ‘A’ event and ‘B’ event qualifier to the provincial championship. The only region that may require an A-B playoff to complete the double knock-out competition is the region with the provincial host. The A-B playoff will only be contested if the provincial host has not won either the ‘A’ or ‘B’ event. In the regions without an A-B playoff the ‘A’ event winner will be considered the Regional champion.

A random draw, held in the SHSAA office, will determine the placing of teams in the draw for both the regional and provincial competitions. Teams from the same district/regional will be placed in opposite halves of the draw.

Districts should declare their representatives to the Regional Championships and contact the regional commissioners and SHSAA office by Monday February 11, 2013.

Regional commissioners are asked to contact both the SHSAA office and provincial commissioner by Monday February 18, 2013 with the names of the schools which have advanced to the provincial championship from the Regional Championship they are hosting.

SHSAA COACHES SYMPOSIUM

The SHSAA annual Coaches Symposium will be held August 19 & 20, 2013 at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon. The SHSAA believes the Symposium is an excellent opportunity for coaches of different activities to gather in one location to participate together in a professional development opportunity that will enhance the extra-curricular experience of the student athletes around the province. Each of the fourteen SHSAA districts is offering incentives to support coaches who want to attend, please contact your District Executive. This opportunity is available to all coaches including non-faculty and community coaches.

This is the thirteenth consecutive year of the Symposium. This year’s symposium is again planning to provide entry-level sessions as well as advanced sessions in a variety of sports that are a part of the SHSAA programming. The registration fee will be $100.00 if registered prior to June 30th and $125.00 for those who register after this date. Pamphlets and registration forms will be distributed to schools this spring as well as being available on the SHSAA website.

The symposium will once again offer pre-conference sessions on Monday. These optional offerings have minimal additional cost attached. The pre-conference offers an opportunity to further diversify your symposium experience.

The Symposium Committee is actively planning the sessions and inviting presenters to participate. If you have someone in mind that you would like to hear give a presentation, take the time to forward the name to the SHSAA office or an executive member. If you are approached to present, please give the opportunity serious consideration. It is our own ‘made in Saskatchewan’ coaches who each year receive such positive feedback from those in attendance at the symposium.

The Challenge of Teaching Sportsmanship By Karen Coffin

Playing against a decidedly weaker opponent can be a bad experience. A good team can play very poorly if it is overconfident and nonchalant. The quality of play can deteriorate if the better team resorts to sloppy execution and plays down to the level of the competition. If the favored team wins by a big score, frustrations can erupt in to violence; if the score is close, it’s considered to be a huge disappointment. Of course, the coach is keenly aware of the ultimate disaster - actually losing. A game that is supposed to be a “laugher” can turn out to be anything but funny.

Surprisingly a coach has some tough decisions to make when playing “easy” contest. The coach certainly wants to win, but how will he or she coach this game? Is it OK to run up the score? Do you play your starters for most of the game? Should you use this opportunity to let the team or individual players set records and pad statistics? How do you keep your team motivated? Can you use this opportunity to improve your team? What do you want to teach in this situation?

The last question is the key/ “what do you want to teach?” in today’s climate of youth sports, the pressure is on coaches to win and win big. Having great stats often is seen as the No. 1 criterion for athletic success. Watch any sport broadcast on TV and notice all the times a statistic is used to provide commentary. The majority of individual awards are based on statistics, and it is a constant struggle to teach teamwork to kids who are overly conscious of their personal stats.

This pressure puts the onus on coaches to win every game and enable athletes to build shiny resumes for college recruiters. Fans will be proud, the community excited, parents happy and the coach admired if the team is successful. What’s wrong with any of that? Nothing, except high school coaches have larger goals than great stats and pleasing fans. They need to do more. High school coaches are charged with furthering the development of sportsmanship and positive character traits in their athletes. They are to model and teach respect.

The issue of running up the score, sparked by a high school girl’s basketball game in Texas, caused a nationwide and heated debate last year. The subject raged on sports talk political pundits weighted in with comments about the competitive nature of Americans being under attack because the coach was widely criticized for what happened.

The final score of the basketball game was 100-0. According to news reports, the winning team played hard, urged on by fans and coaches, until it scored the 100th point. After that, the team apparently played strictly to prohibit the other team from scoring. The story hit the news and opinions were strong about whether the coach was justified in the strategy of playing hard or way out of line for sportsmanship reasons.

The winning school decided to forfeit the game and fired the coach. According to the administration, these decisions were based on the belief that the score was “shameful and an embarrassment… victory without honor is a great loss” Yes, indeed, this is a coaching dilemma. Your job and reputation could depend on your decision. Should you run up the score?

Teaching athletes to respect opponents can be a tough sell in today’s youth sports culture. There is decidedly less agreement on what constitutes good sportsmanship these days. Certainly, there has been a diminishment in its importance to many fans, as previously noted, coaches have some hard decisions to make when playing against a very weak opponent.

The decisions begin at practice and carry over to the competition. A coach’s philosophy about the spirit of competition will largely determine how he/she approaches this game. What is important to you will be communicated to your players and the fans. What do you want to teach? Let’s explore the rationale of differing decisions in the debate about what’s important.

Scoreboard Only:  You should teach your team to always play hard. It demeans the spirit of sport to take it easy.

 You need to build positive stats and records. It’s important to go for records, awards and headlines. Success is measured by impressive stats. Your potential state ranking might be higher.

 Beating a team by a big score puts fear into further opponents. It’s an intimidation factor.

 Losing is not an option. If we take it easy and lose, it will ruin our season.

 A team will develop more confidence and acquire a stronger winning attitude with every victory.

January 2013 www.shsaa.ca Page 16 SASKATCHEWAN HIGH SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

 The object of competition is to win. Winning big is better. Treat every opponent the same.

Beyond The Scoreboard:  Nothing is accomplished by routing a non-competitive team. It’s nice to have an easy game or match during a long season, and it is common practice to schedule “easier” opponents early in the year. It’s treated like a scrimmage. Coaches use these opportunities to evaluate players and strategies, and yes, to help the team’s win-loss record. A lopsided win doesn’t really give a true picture about how good a team is, however. It is more about how mismatched the other team is.

 There is no incentive to improve if you can win easily. Athletes will enjoy a false sense of confidence about how good they are. It’s very tough for coaches to motivate players to work harder or change techniques when the kids are experiencing great success just the way things are. Cagey coaches will schedule a tough opponent early, knowing a loss will help bring focus and intensity to practices.

 Padding the schedule with easy wins is false success. The record does not accurately reflect the true ability of the team. A team needs to be challenged to know how good it can be.

 It’s bad sportsmanship. High school athletics are part of the educational program. If we encourage punishing and embarrassing weak opponents, we are condoning behavior that is a punishable offence in all other facets of academic life. It IS possible to play hard, win and teach respect all at the same time

 Have fun; but not at the expense of the opposing team.

Perspective: Coaches need to have a solid plan to handle this dilemma. What do we really want to teach our athletes? Sportsmanship and behaving with honor are two of the tenets of sports which may be unwritten, but they are of critical importance. We need to value playing a worthy opponent. The best and most exciting contests are between closely matched players. We need good opponents to have great competition.

Learning respect for rules, officials, coaches and opponents should be a by-product of playing sports. To actually accomplish this, coaches must teach respect, every day to every player. They must make it important, talk about it and model it with their own behavior. The kids are watching! Parents also must understand that having respect for others is important and support coaches who demand it from the athletes.

Game Plans for a Weak Opponent This game can help your team improve, be important to the players and teach sportsmanship. Be creative. Obviously, sports that do not allow substitutions pose a different problem since playing time is a non-issue. Deciding on the starting lineup can still be adjusted accordingly and new individual goals can be developed.  Give generous playing time to non-starters.

 Play kids only until they have reached their statistical averages.

 Play reserves when the game is in early stages. Make it meaningful for them.

 Start reserves, especially seniors.

 Try new lineups – mid starters with reserves. Let kids play different positions than usual.

 Try new plays or strategies you have practiced.

 Set guidelines for skills and restrictions for scoring. (Use non-dominant hand; all players must touch the ball before shooting; rush the net at least once a game; etc.) Take players out of their comfort zones.

 Challenge individual players with specific goals. Expect a high level of intensity.

 Have fun, but not at the expense of opponents. It is helpful if parents can be informed of any adaptations before the contest. Most will applaud the philosophy and appreciate the coach’s motives. Teach respect. It’s important.
